Remember our “Have a Sweater? Make a Pillow!” post? Well, now it’s time to use the same principle to make an adorable pom-pom hat to go with the cooler weather that’s rolling in. If you don’t have expert sewing skills, don’t worry! It’s really easy and a great way to upcycle either an old sweater or make use of a thrift store sweater that doesn’t fit but has a good pattern or color. Let’s get started!
Supplies:
-sweater
-fabric scissors
-straight pins
-standard sewing machine
-yarn & cardboard for pom-pom
First you’ll want to grab a knit hat that has a shape you already like. Turn your sweater inside out, flatten, and place the hat at the bottom of the sweater band. Trace the outline around the edge of the hat with straight pins.
Use your sewing machine and follow the lines of the pins to sew the outline of the hat. Use a medium to small stitch and go slowly as you sew your line.
Use your fabric scissors to cut around your sewn hat, leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Take your cardboard and yarn and follow this pom-pom tutorial to make a fun topper for your hat (just change the cardboard donut size to 4″ wide with a 1″ hole in the middle. If you want to make a mixed color pom-pom like the black and white one, just wrap two different colors at once. Use a needle and thread to secure the pom-pom to the top of the hat, and you’re finished!
See, I told you it was easy! I bribed these two pretty ladies into being my hat models by telling them they could keep their favorite hat. Thankfully, we all liked a different hat the best so it worked out perfectly! Happy sewing! xo. Laura

sooo cute!! I love your patterns and colors! What a great way to reuse sweaters that you don’t wear anymore (hence making room for more fabulous sweaters recently purchased)
I have a sweater that was washed with a red shirt so now it has a hint of pink color. I can’t bear to throw it out…but I can make a cute hat out of it now, thanks to your post!! 🙂

Love the recycle ideas. No haste, no waste. The only thing I would do different is to do a French seam so the hat would look finished. Thanks for the really cute idea.
Anne, you must have been reading my mind. Was thinking of the dear people in the shelters who could use a warm and pretty/handsome hat.
You girls look too cute!
Hi, It is actually easy to make pom poms as you will remember, but these days you can buy little devices to help you! Still some work to do but it goes faster.
They are a great idea! But for whom likes to knit or crochet… Here there are some of our ideas! wanna look! 😉
That is such a lovely idea. I love recycling old clothes. Beanies/pom pom hats are so trendy right now!
so wonderful=no more waste just because you snagged a hole in your sweater or one part got worn-top marks for saving the planet
