I am a big fan of fruit and chocolate together. Like, a giant fan of it. If fruit and chocolate had a mom, I would be a bigger fan of them than their mom. However, I’ve changed my diet over the last year to avoid as much refined sugar and dairy as possible, so I’ve had to get a little creative when picking out my late-night sweet treats. At the moment, I am obsessed with this dairy-free and no-added-sugar banana chocolate shake. I’ve had it at least five times a week for the past month, and it doesn’t look like I’ll let up any time soon. Curious how to make one? Healthy Chocolate Banana Shake, serves one
1 frozen, ripe banana
1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cacao powder
1 tablespoon almond butter (crunchy or smooth, with no added sugar)
1/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk The sweetness in this shake is coming from the banana, so the riper your banana is, the sweeter your shake will be.Β To freeze your banana, peel the banana and cut it into inch-wide slices and put into a plastic freezer bag. (Cutting it into slices first will help the frozen banana blend easier.) Place the bag into the freezer for several hours until the banana slices are fully frozen. Add the frozen banana to the rest of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If your blender needs more liquid to handle the frozen banana, you can add more of the almond milk or a dash of water. This is seriously the kind of chocolate shake that would shock someone who doesn’t know that it’s healthy. I like to keep the same freezer bag for my frozen bananas and keep adding new slices when it gets low. Which is all the time. Because it’s so good. Think you’ll give it a try? xo. Laura

All I can say is YUM!!! I can’t wait to make this!! Love that it has no added sugar, as I am (still!) trying to lose a bit of the holiday weight lol.. (Oh, and thank you for the banana tip, I would have totally frozen it whole!)

I am so trying this.
That hersheys cocoa is to die for. Please try the cake recipe on the back. It has been the sole purpose of trips across the border for me.

may I ask where the gorgeous glass is from? thanks!
Yummmmm I drank a version of this all summer! HEAVENLY!
This looks super yummy and I just so happen to have tons of containers full of frozen chopped up bananas. We always buy bananas with the intention of eating them before they start going bad, but apparently we never do! So I always end up freezing them and using them in shakes and baking (I’m not complaining!). I’ve never used cacao powder in my shakes so can’t wait to try this!

Yumm I must make this!
Oh … and everytime I see the word “cacao” my mind instantly thinks of that episode in Portlandia π
YUM!!! I need to try this soon
I love your shake et your glasses π

Looks deliciout! I will try it!

I would not exactly call this healthy-healthy, but it’s not as bad as other shakes or frappuccinos out there. Still lots of liquid calories in this drink.
yummy! looks like the perfect snack

Yum!! I’ve tried to make chocolate mousse and ice cream after the same principle (frozen bananas, cacao, and then varying the other ingredients), works like a charm! Super yummy and healthy π WIN!

You’ve just described the breakfast smoothie I’ve been making since 2000. I use natural peanut butter and also add chia seeds (for omega 3s).
It’s a way for me to consume milk without drinking it on its own, the smoothie/milkshake keeps me full until lunch, and it’s a great portable breakfast to drink on my way to work.
I had not thought of freezing the banana in slices… great idea!!
Mmm, I’ve always wanted to try one of these ever since I took a liking to banana all of a sudden. I’ll have to keep this bookmarked for when we’ve got the ingredients around!
We could all use more healthy things in our diets. Thanks for sharing with us. Frozen bananas are a treat. You can also find the chocolate covered ones in the freezer section at the grocery. I think DOLE is the one who makes them.
This is about the previous post, but I can’t find a place to comment on that one! Seeing your rug interests, I would like to recommend http://www.theanou.com/ to you. It is a Moroccan artisan forum, run and operated by artisans (trained by Peace Corps Volunteers, although this year they will be 100% independent), and there are lots of rugs on there. I am a PCV in Morocco, and I have personally met and worked with several of the artisans. The site takes out the middle man and ensures that the artisans see the profits from their products. Even if you decide not to buy a Moroccan rug, it is still worth checking it out!
This looks delicious! I recently discovered you can make pancakes from a mashed banana mixed with two eggs and… I am a total banana addict now! They are literally the best fruit!
Shake looks fine but honestly, I’m waaaayyyyy more interested in where you got that bad ass drinking glass. The last of my tall drinking glasses just broke and I’m on the market and that is totally up my alley.
Chocolate banana shakes are the bees knees. Super simple and perfection in flavor. xo

I take care of my neice and nephew and they have a very unhealthy snacking and after school chocolate milk habit and they have health problems (obesity/prediabetes), so I obviously want to help do what I can when I’m around. But it’s hard to know what to do. I’m really trying to find suggestions. Its hard when you’re not the parent to deny or change a habit and a kid shouldn’t really feel like they’re dieting. They won’t touch a banana or most fruit. But i love this. I’m thinking if I sneak them this maybe they will learn they like bananas if i tell them much later that they’re in there and it will be a little healthier than chocolate milk, even a lot healthier when you consider it should keep them full enough to avoid more snacking. I appreciate this idea so much, I think it’s going to change things after school for us! π
Looks good ladies!

I make these often and YES they are delicious!
This is just what I need for my next sugar craving!! I’ve already got the cocoa and there’s always a bunch of bananas in the kitchen. I might substitute with peanut butter or hazelnut butter as I tend to have allergic reactions to almonds. And goat’s milk is my new best friend, so can’t wait to try my own version out!! Thanks xxx
The shake looks tasty, but what I need to know is where you got those drinking glasses!
This is sooo one of my favorite summertime snacks!!!!! I’m currently too cold for shakes, lol! But summer is coming!!!! : ) thanks for sharing!
Looks so yummy. Will try for sure! Where is the drinking glass from?? So gorgeous.
I have a banana almost ripe enough for this, then I’m definitely making this! Hopefully tomorrow π Thanks for sharing! I also LOVE the fruit/chocolate combo.

We are always looking for sweet alternatives. YUM!

I saw those (or something VERY similar) in IKEA π
I was just wondering what you would suggest as a supplement for the almond butter? My family has a history of sensitivity to almonds! And almond is hard to find here! π thank you!
I’ve just read that post and had to make this shake immediately. Since don’t have almond butter at home, I just used some tonka bean-almond cream (unfortunately sweetened). And I also used an unfrozen banana because I definitely couldn’t wait until that banana would have been frozen:-). All I have to say is: It was delicious!! Soooooo good! Thanks for the recipe! Regards from Switzerland
Looks so yummy!

I’ve never even thought about freezing a banana! Looking forward to trying this at the weekend. x

Yum! I too am hoping to take refined sugar out of my diet as much as possible. Can you recommend any websites or recipe books that helped you?
It is from Ikea. Can’t find it online – but I have found mine in my Ikea nearby.
Mmm, using frozen fruit instead of ice cubes is always my ‘secret’ tip for smoothies. This looks delicious!

Love this! Bananas and chocolate are such a great combination. Along with bananas and peanut butter! Thanks for sharing!

Yum, I can’t wait to try this chocolate shake recipe! I always use cocoa powder myself, but what is to NOT love about real chocolate?!
To make it even healthier use non-gmo ingredients. π
Seriously everything I love in one smoothie. Can never go wrong with bananas and chocolate! I like adding coconut as well.

Hello gals- my comment isn’t about this recipe – it’s about your spaghetti squash recipe http://abeautifulmess.com/2013/10/spaghetti-squash-with-easy-tomato-sauce.html. Actually it’s about the recipe for the sauce. You list a large can of tomatoes. Is it a 28 oz can. One person’s view of large may be different than another’s. Please help. Btw, I tried the squash itself and loved it. I’m a new convert. π I brushed the cut squash halves with much less oil and sprinkled on pepper and Italian herbs, onion and garlic powders. No salt. It was delicious. I do hope you reply to this or email me with the info. I know you gals are really busy and popular now but I sure would appreciate clarification with this. Thank you!
Yes, it’s a 28 oz can. You nailed it.
And it’s really funny that you are writing about that particular post today because I am *right now* drafting in another spaghetti squash recipe for later this week.
Happy to hear you’re a new convert! Go spaghetti squash lovers!!!!
-Emma
I have to try this! I m sure my kids are going to love it too π
Any other kind of nut butter would be good (I like peanut butter as well), but just omit it if no nuts would be safe, it’s good without it too π
Laura
So far I haven’t found any no-sugar sites that I’m into, but I just try and find good vegan recipes and think of better substitutes for the sugar or maple syrup-sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!
Laura π
I make a similar smoothie but add spinach, pears and Greek yogurt. Delicious!
Ohhhh!!! This sounds lovely!! Hahaha, anything with chocolate and I’m there!!

Just tried it…it’s great!
OMG.
As often happens with recipes on A Beautiful Mess, as soon as I saw this one, I HAD to try it. I was so pumped when I realized I already had all of the ingredients (including a frozen banana) so I didn’t have to go out in the snow to get them. And wow. This is DELICIOUS! I’m definitely adding this to my regular smoothie/shake rotation!
I love healthy banana shakes, I make my own with cacao powder instead of real chocolate. So yum!

Wow that looks amazing and I think I’ll be making it for breakfast tomorrow morning. Chocolate or banana anything are usually a win for me. Thanks for sharing this!

Nothing makes my kids happier than the addition of chocolate to their pb and banana smoothies π
This si one of my favourite smoothie combinations! It’s all natural, healthy and filling π If I need some greens, I’ll add avocado or some spinach to this mix π
OMG… you may just be my new favorite person ever! Chocolate Banana Shakes were my go to dessert when I was pregnant, basically the best thing ever!
Can’t wait to try this dairy-free and sugar free version! Just need to head out and get the cocoa powder. Used the last of it up last week! π
This looks so amazing!!
This looks amazing!! I can’t wait to try this!
This was so delicious! I just made it and I LOVE it! Thank you for sharing a tasty and healthy recipe. I am on the “Eat to Live” program and I love finding new and good recipes that I can indulge in.
Sounds yum!! Something worth having in the cold winter days!! Gotta look forward to the end of lent to try this π
PS. Is soy an option as well, or is almond milk a lot better? Have you guys tried soy milk? I never tried almond milk.. I’m not really friends with dairy at all…

FINALLY a paleo/LCHF friendly recipe!! Must try π
At first, I thought the combination of banana and chocolate is weird but when I tried it, it’s really good. Thinking of adding nuts next time.
I love smoothies in the morning and for snacks. With chocolate I would have them non-stop. This looks so good.
YUM! Honestly, this looks extremely delicous, I’ll have to try it as soon as possible! π
Yummy, i’m gonna try make this when i get home http://www.3starsabove.com/
This looks and sounds delish! AND the glass and blender – love the yellow & geometric lines. A great combination of healthy and yummy!
http://www.uniquelywomen.net
Did you actually mean to write only 1/3 cup almond milk? I definitely had to at least double it.
Will try for sure! also, where did you get those glasses? love them!
Looks good!
This looks delicious, but I can’t stand the taste of bananas! yuck!

Made this for breakfast today and added a scoop of vanilla protein powder for some staying power. So delicious! And unlike one commenter said above, the calories are actually not bad at all (~350) if you drink it as a meal replacement.
I did as well. I ended up using about 1 cup total (which is what I typically use for smoothies anyway). 1/3 cup is not enough…
This is incredibly delicious! Thanks for sharing!
Try it with raw cacao – has the added benefits of antioxidants to make your shake reeeeaaaallly good for you π
I’m going to go ahead and say it, I’m a chocoholic. Yet I avoid it like the plague as much as I can resist temptation, but no longer! This look absolutely delicious. I must try this! I would not have thought to put almond butter in it though. Very interesting!
http://www.lioninthewild.com
Made this last night it and it was fantastic! I just substituted almond butter with 1 tbsp peanut butter because I couldn’t find any. Still delicious! Thanks Laura x
Oh, this looks like something I would like to do…
I wonder if I could substitute the almond butter with something else, since I am not a fan of it!?
you should read the blog http://www.thisrawsomeveganlife.com/
i was already vegan and then came across some health issues where i can’t eat sugar, soy, or gluten and this blog has saved my sweet tooth. i even eat the cakes for breakfast sometimes!!! it rules.
I am drinking this right now as a before yoga snack and it is awesome. And I remembered how to make it without looking at the post.
This looks so tasty! I must try it!! π
Oh you KNOW I’m going to try this + sneak some spinach in there π Thanks for the recipe! Xo.
One of my faves, but this Almond Milk isn’t ideal… still full of funny ingredients that don’t need to be there, plus it’s pretty expensive! It’s easy to make your own, or maybe there are other brands out there.
I’m trying to stay away from chocolate, but this looks to good!
Just made this on low carb and no sugar diet it’s great! added 20g of summer fruit in place of peanut butter due to only having sugarly peanut butter avaiable and its quenched all my cravings, thank you! π
