You no longer have to settle for a cheesy reindeer door mat to welcome your holiday guests! With your style in mind and a little bit of paint you can make something that feels much more like home. I chose a simple geometric design that mimicked pine trees and used gold and white to make it more festive.
I found an inexpensive, bristly door mat at a local box store with an unpleasant design that I knew I could cover up. Since my door mat was a dark color I went with a base spray paint color that would easily show on top, metallic gold. You can choose from a variety of colors but keep in mind that a light spray painted base might not cover the darker mat as well. You'll also need a paint brush and acrylic craft paint in your color of choice. I chose warm white to contrast with the metallic gold base.
One can of spray paint should cover your mat easily but feel free to use two. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area and protect the surface you're working on with cardboard or a drop cloth. Follow manufacturer's instructions on your spray paint can.
After you've allowed for drying time you'll want to paint your second layer with your acrylic paint. I free-handed my triangles and varied the height and width but you could also measure things out for a sharper design. A bristly mat will give you the effect of flocked trees. I used a whole tube of craft paint to fill in my trees. Once you're finished let it dry before putting it to use.
A custom door mat will cheer up your space for the holidays but would also make a great house warming gift for any season. Happy Holidays! xo. Rachel

This is very cute. I’m not really religious, but I still enjoy the Holiday Season, so I really like it when people come up with nice non-denominational decorations. I’ve seen other spray painted mat type projects this is one of my favorites.

so cute and festive!
This is so simple and brilliant! It’s a rainy winter here now and I’ve been thinking of buying a door mat for the first time ever. But tell me, door mats are for scrubbing the bottom of your shoes, won’t that make the gold paint come off and track all over your floors? Have you noticed any stains after?
super cute idea!! perfect for the holidays 🙂
Such a cute idea! It would be fun to see what designs other people use. Thanks for sharing.
this is so funny, i painted a star theme on my porch this summer and had an old target mat that had lost all of it’s original painted design over time…so i took the stencil i had made for the star and spray painted it onto the doormat…just like this. it looks so great! two great minds? 🙂

I need to make this! I LOVE it.
Spray paint can really be a powerful tool — I know a few people who make great art with spray paint [ not of the graffiti variety 😉 ]

I almost purchased a Christmas rug for the front door last night… I am so glad I waited.. I am going to do this instead…I love your blog, so glad I stumbled upon it..
Merry Christmas!!
Such a great look, and so easy to do! Great job, love it. : )..
Such a cute mat! Thanks for sharing this.
So, so cute! Love the ingenuity at display here!
Did the craft paint hold up to all those feet tramping it over the holidays? Another way to go about it might be to cut the shapes to make a paper stencil and use spray paint for the design.
this is a very sweet idea!
also, those glossy boots are calling my name. what brand are they?

I love all the ideas I have seen and I can’t wait to try them in out in our new room. Backyard rooms came and created the perfect craft room for me.
This is brilliant! My boyfriend and I spent all winter hunting for a somewhat inspired doormat with little luck and a rather dirty hallway. This DIY is certainly the answer!
Thanks for the inspiration.
This is what I usually do for walls:1) Fill the nails holes with cnuopmod (of course).2) When it dries, sand the patches. While I’m at it, I lightly run the sandpaper over the walls to knock off nerdles, bumps, cobwebs, etc. I don’t think you need to go overboard, just get it smooth. Most bumps knock right off. Should take just a few extra minutes.3) Wipe the walls down with a wet towel to get the dust and junk off.4) Have a blast painting it!Regarding the parquet, I’ve only used it twice. Both times, it was from Home Depot. Both times it was with the Commercial Grade stick-on tile, as compared to the lighter duty Residential Grade. So far, both floors are holding up great! The Commercial Grade had a better warrenty, and I figured if it is meant for commercial use, it will hold up in my home.
Great idea! I don’t think I will have to worry about a ‘teen’ room for a while, luckily I’m still in that fuffly cutesy stage with my daughter! (hehe, I don’t think I’m ready for her to have a black curtain rod!) But this sure is a great way to display all the sweet artwork she makes!
Amazing stuff. I’ve been a fan of yours since my days at Dreamworks walking by your widnow everyday before and after lunch. I’m so glad you decided to have a blog/website. Ken KimP.S. I hope you throw in more tutorials when you get a chance.
Hi CormacThanks for reporting this.I have uteapdd the webplayer to work, and I have also uteapdd the project to work in unity 2.6.The script cannot paint on terrains directly, I made an example script which shows all the options and sends the paint calls, you can write a script which paints on the terrain too, basically all you need to do is to transform the coordinates from world space to texture space.
Cool.First thing, a soft edged bruch would be great to have.Secondly, is it possible to chosoe on which texture to paint?I’m thinking, for example to fix small problems on lightmaps.Third, some kind of representation of the brush size.
Mil gracias x subir los promo only k la veradd estan super, solamente kisiera comentar y recordar k el link 9 del urban video de sep no a sido arreglado, solo espero k lo reparen para poder descomprimirlo. gracias.
I purchased this pudcrot around four years ago to paint wicker furniture. Since that time, I also painted my foundation and deck. The sprayer was finicky. It did splatter at times, but the most annoying thing was that it would clog-up and stop spraying. This happened numerous times while painting my deck. I spent more time cleaning it than painting. Eventually, the sprayer stop spraying all together. It turns out that the piston kept getting paint on it and seizing. The only place to get parts is online. Hardware stores (even the big names) don’t carry parts. I ordered a new piston and other parts. The cost was more than half of what I payed for the sprayer. I reassembled it and tried this P.O.S. again. It worked for 15 minutes then the piston began seizing AGAIN. After that, it would work fine for one or two minutes then seize. I cleaned and oiled it five more times. No luck. I’m done with this thing. It’s terrible. I’ll never buy a Wagner again. Note that I always thoroughly cleaned and oiled the item according to the instructions after using it.
Thanks for the cool idea! Could you share what kind of boots those are btw? They’re SO CUTE, I’d like to buy a pair
Hey Elsie… Love this one and have tried it already. The only problem is that after only a few weeks my paint has really faded!!! I can touch it up bu it will probably happen again! Any ideas on how to make the beauty last???
I read your statement…….. Wow. I wish I would have let go and let my art cnmusoe me earlier in life. I took the safe path but I was never happy. I admire your resolve. You have a great gift. You inspire people.
