Welcome to my kitchen. This is where the magic happens.
Originally my kitchen had dark wood cabinets, laminate counter tops, popcorn ceilings and complimentary curtains + shades. My house came with a black refrigerator and stove/oven. This was the first room I started to update, as I spend a lot of time in my kitchen. I wanted to brighten up the space and add light. So I painted the cabinets a soft yellow (butter cream). I left them that way for months but they just never felt right. It felt a little too country (which is cool, but didn't go with the rest of the house) and the yellow just didn't feel quite right against the black appliances.Once I saw how the all black living room didn't actually look too small or too dark I decided to explore the idea of adding more black to the kitchen. I decided to do the upper cabinets half black and half white, for fun and to add light. My favorite feature in my kitchen is the all stainless steel counter tops. I love them! They remind me of working in a commercial kitchen. You can cut right on them if you like and they are super easy to clean, great for kitchens that get used a lot. Even though I went with a mostly black and white color pallette I added a few pops of orange (knives, my mixer and dish towels) and lime green (inside my cabinets). These little POCs keep the kitchen feeling playful. Thanks for stopping by! xo. Emma

I think Emma’s room tours are my most favorite ever!! Beautifully done without looking like a museum. Id love to know where the utensil holders are from. Love the gold flecks!
Have you guys used the beer kit? We got one for Christmas two years ago and it led to a whole new adventure in beer making. Next we are saving up to get a kegerator since we got tired of bottling 100 bottles!! Such a fun experience!!
I would love to know where the window shades are from. They are great!
You know what I love most about this kitchen?? Is that it looks like EMMA’S kitchen. I think kitchens are one of the hardest spaces to decorate and show personality because cabinets and kitchen appliances can be pretty boring… But you just proved that is not always the case! Great job. Also…. Now I really want stainless steel counter tops. ๐
I’m in love with your cupboards!! Your entire home tour so far is so beautiful.
Stove twins! And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the green on the inside.
YES! More home tour! I love to see what you end up doing. So fun! Makes me want to paint the insides of my cabinets right this second! Ok, after some coffee. But soon!:)
This is so amazing and beautiful! I just wondered, your mounted antlers, how did you mount them with the florals attached? My boyfriend is moving in shortly and giving his buck antlers he’s so fond of a little me would be ideal !
I want a kitchen aid mixer soo bad! Love the colours of the wall units, inside and out ๐

This was so inspiring! I love the pops of color!
Can you drink out of the painted mason jars? They look so cute like that! I have a million that I need to find a use for and this could be perfect.
it reminds me of halloween. i love it!!

Your kitchen is beautiful! Odd question though I have the exact same stove as you and was wondering are you able to use cast iron and your le cruset pans on it? I’ve always thought I couldn’t.
Beautiful kitchen Emma! Do you have any tips for painting cabinets? I’m thinking of painting mine! ๐
Ohhh soooo cooool!!! Really lovely kitchen! Emma, you are my foodie queen ^_^
Oh goodness, this is amazing! I want to go home and paint my cabinets like that (if only I could) right now!
What a gorgeous makeover !!

I love the white cabinets on top and the black on the bottom! my cabinets are the same way and it creates interest in the eye as well as bring the eye up to elongate the room.

You two are so crafty. I would love to hear about your parents. Have a great Monday.
I really like this kitchen. It’s fashionable and funky and still feels like a normal person’s kitchen. Like another person commented – it’s not a museum! Absolutely wonderful!
This is so cute! I want all of the appliances and le cruset things!

Is that a Delonghi espresso maker? I’m thinking of getting one soon, and I would love recommendations (and a punch of color wouldn’t hurt)!
Also, loving the stainless steel counters!!!
oh man. everything! so great! i’ve been trying to get hubs to get behind black cabinets and i think this just might help push him over to my side! yay! thanks!

Yes, I actually, quite epically, failed at beer making. Ha! I’ve been meaning to try again. Anything involving yeast tends to be a challenge for me. ๐

Oh Holly-you are too kind. Can’t wait for you to show me how to make macaroons soon!

Yes, I use both on it all the time. I use cast iron more often than any other pan actually.

what a fun room! you do spend so much time in the kitchen, it needs to feel like yours.
(as an aside, my home post on our master bedroom makeover today was titled “where the magic happens”[http://hooleywithaz.com/where-the-magic-happens%5D…made me laugh that i saw it in yours today too!)
Yes it is. I bought it from Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/DeLonghi-Kmix-Bars-Espresso-Maker/dp/B005MM7X88
I’ve been pretty happy with it all year. The only times it has given me trouble is when I first set it up and got used to using it, and then also if I forget it refill it with water. ๐ I LOVE making latte’s at home and although this is no where near as good as a commercial espresso machine is is way more affordable and a great home option. And yes, I’m a sucker for the colors.
-Emma
I love the bar cart and that hidden green in the cupboards!
this is sucha fun kitchen. you’re in there so often, it should definitely be a room you love and feel good in.
(as an aside, my home improvement post on our master bedroom was titled “where the magic happens” and so it made me laugh to see it was in yours today too.)

So funny! I have the exact same stove (came with the house) with my red Le Creuset dutch oven (mine is round, not oval though) and old cast iron skillet as permanent fixtures on top. Thanks for sharing your lovely kitchen..it’s always my favorite room in a house!
Really liking this kitchen. My favorite parts are the counters and your pops of orange.
It looks so nice!! I really like the black and white cabinets! ๐

This looks really cool! Your home seems to have quite a bit of black in it, but somehow it doesn’t come off as dark and depressive. ๐ xx
http://www.kaisaphoto.com/
Did you re-tile? Or did you somehow just replace the grout? Kind of worried this is a dumb question, but I’m really curious if it is possible to bleach dark grout or regrout economically.
Thanks!
Gorgeous, good work!

I agree that this kitchen really let’s Emma’s personality shine. I’m in the process of deciding what i want to do in my kitchen and now I’m really trying to decide how to i let my space reflect me and my family in a unique way. Begs the question: Who the heck am I/ are we?
Your use of color in your kitchen is so unique and fun! Plus I really love how you changed from black to white using a zig zag pattern!
Wow – you have just totally inspired me to paint my dark wood cabinets. Would love tips on how to paint around all those awkward crevices ๐
Oh my gosh is that a pug bust? where did you find that? Love the kitchen!
This is SO FUN! I LOVE Your kitchen! How did you do the pattern on your cabinets? Did you tape it off? Thanks!
I love the cabinets! Very cool space.
This is such a pretty room! I really love the blinds xo
I LOVE it. What I love most is it looks like a real functional kitchen. I get tired of house tours that don’t look lived in. They just make people feel bad about their own house. Especially those of us with children!I love that you didn’t seem to hide things just because they didn’t look so…perfect. Like that awesome beer making kit. The cabinets are so awesome!
I adore your cabinets! Very unique.
Is that little pug hanging on the wall made by Katie? :>
Beautiful!
Question about the stainless counter tops. I have always wanted them but was unsure of their ability to become scratched. I haven’t researched at all yet, but was wondering if there are specific grades or types out there that prevent this from happening?
Thanks!
Happy cooking (and eating…)
Jill
Oh wow, your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous!
Working as a chef I definitely miss those stainless steel countertops when I return home from work and suddenly have to remember using a cutting board for everything and not leave hot pots and pans on them!
So cool!

Such an awesome kitchen! Those cabinets are incredible!
Beautiful kitchen! I was wondering where the Knife and fork wood decor is from. Is it a DIY or did you find it somewhere!? It’s so perfect for a kitchen!
Love how you painted the cabinets, your kitchen looks amazing.
I love how you did the upper cabinets!
Did you re-tile or re-grout?
SO cute! I’m loving these room tours. And the pops of orange throughout the kitchen is beautiful! Makes me so excited and ready for a home! ๐
http://sometimesgracefully.com
Yes!! I’ll show you everything I know. ๐
Your kitchen is absolutely amazing! Especially the Kitchen Aid, I’d love to have one, too! ๐
I have a question about the stainless countertops. Do you like them? Are they hard to keep clean? I’ve considered them but I find the appliances to be a lot of upkeep since they get fingerprinted so very easily. Lovely kitchen by the way. I love it!
I love the antlers too! I’m going to have to try it out!
THE AFTER IS PRETTY DAMN COOL.
Beautiful! I wanted to know where you bought those, what seems like porcelain mason jars?
I liked it better when it was yellow…but I love that inner cabinet that is bright green!
were the stainless countertops very expensive?
How absolutely beautiful. I’ve never seen black looks so gorgeous and chic – it’s nice to see what versatile color it really is!
Love the wall decor! Did you make those?
Oh I was so looking forward to seeing your kitchen! I knew I would love it!!! It’s so pretty!!!

LOVE your kitchen!!! I have never seen half/half cabinets before but I am obsessed and expect that they will suddenly become popular ๐
Could you share your source for the glass canisters?? I am in the process of organizing my kitchen cupboards and those would do a lovely job of corralling all of my dry ingredients.
And I would also love to know more about stainless counters!! It’s like the functionality of butcher block but better!!! Hope you love them because they look awesome.
So beautiful, Emma!
Where did you get the wooden socket surrounds from?
Louise
I love your cabinets! Do you have any tips for painting them? Just wondering what your process was since the cabinets had been painted before and your finished look is great! Any tips would be appreciated!
So beautiful! What was the process for acquiring/installing the counter tops?
The steel magnetic(?) knife holder above your stove, where did you get it?
Holy awesome! I want to paint my kitchen cabinets but am afraid to do it on my own (vs. professionally). Any good advice?

I replaced the grout. It was pretty damaged and had worn away in a lot of places. I went with a lighter color since I could. I’m not totally in love with the titles but it’s not in budget this year to replace them, so making them less noticeable seemed like a route I could go. ๐
-Emma
It’s from Katie (skunkboyblog.com) She gifted me for my birthday last year. ๐
-Emma
Created a stencil out of cardboard and tape it up.
-Emma
Yes. Pretty cute, no?! Katie’s stuff is the best!!!!
-Emma
I’m not sure if there are different grades… I’d ask a contractor. Mine were installed by one as it’s a pretty serious project.
They don’t really scratch but they will look like it if not properly cleaned every now and again. If you get them buy stuff that is made for cleaning stainless steel and give your counters some tlc twice a month or so.
-Emma
Yes, it’s a diy. You can see it on our site here: http://abeautifulmess.com/2013/01/kitchen-wall-art.html
-Emma
yes, my floors REALLY needed it.
-Emma
I LOVE them. I think they are the perfect surface for anyone who likes cooking a lot. Very easy to clean and I like the industrial look too. They were the most expensive thing that I’ve done in my house so far because they had to build them to fit my kitchen. But to me-very worth it. ๐
-Emma
Yes. Most expensive thing I did. They have to build them to fit your space so that’s part of why it can get quiet pricey. I have “a guy” we use for more advanced home projects (that we can’t DIY, like those counters) and he always finds the best prices. So they were reasonable, but def a splurge.
-Emma
The canisters are from Target.
I really like Target if you can’t tell. ๐
-Emma
Get a contractor. Get a quote. Save up. Have it done.
Sorry I can’t tell you more but its NOT a diy. WAY too advanced for this gal. ๐
-Emma

Your kitchen is so fun!! Love all the little details!!
Was wondering where those white with gold polka dot utensil holders are from?

Such a cute paint job on the cabinets. I love how you made the space work for you rather than ripping out the whole kitchen.

Looks fab- modern but lots of quirky touches which I love…plus awesome essentials like the kitchen aid!
What about the fabulous bar cart! thanks!
Do you have any tips or recommendations on painting the inside of the cabinets? And love the kitch btw!
Wow nice cabinets, i love the way you separated the black and white! too cool ๐
What a beautiful kitchen, love it!~ xx

I know this has nothing to do with your kitchen, which I absolutely LOVE! Where did you get your top? I really love it too!
Thanks so much for sharing your kitchen. I’ve been wanting to do a kitchen make-over for quite some time and am in the “information collecting” stage. Where/how did you get the stainless steel countertops? Were they pricey? I’d be covering about the same amount of space so I’m curious to know the cost.
Cheers!
erica
What did you do with the floor tiles? They look lighter (and nicer)! Have you just refilled the gaps?
LOVE your kitchen! Those pops of color are lovely!
Where did you get the Pug wall thing, please??
It’s sooo cute!
I love every.single.thing about your kitchen. Love it! My kitchen is a nightmare and I basically live in it (baking/cooking fiend) so I need to remodel it but I just don’t have the money right now. I am most intrigued by the stainless steel counters, I had never seen that in a home! Just brilliant! Where did you get them and is it less expensive than granite?
The best part about this kitchen? It actually looks really girly, with the half and half-coloured cabinets and the POCs, but the black paint and the stainless steel makes it also really “manly”, like a guy (YOUR guy!) could easily feel comfy there too. Umm take it as a compliment?! ๐ Hey, I was wondering: I noticed the colours of the floor tiles are different in each photo. Is it just the light or did you do anything to clean them? The caulking looks brand new! We are thinking of doing the same, as the tiles look old but are in great condition. Got any tips?

Love the hobnail coffee mugs! Where are they from?
Ah! That makes SO much more sense! Thank you! ๐
Oh wow, love the styling! Love the inbetween option too but the latest update is very unique! (And awesome for Fall and Halloween ๐ )
It’s so quirky and different! I’m in love.

Those cabinets! That KitchenAid! I’m in love.
Love the kitchen. I too have black cabinets and have been debating over counter tops lately. I like the stainless steel but I have worried that cleaning would be painful. when I clean my stainless fridge it always looks streaky. I have to use the special wipes. Do you have this problem with the counter tops?
I second that!! Love the gold.
id love to know where you got those beautiful wooden pull shades!
Were the stainless steel countertops especially expensive? I hope you don’t mind my asking, I just think they look really great and are a nice alternative to the typical granite I always see ๐
I really enjoyed your kitchen. It’s the type of room anyone could go into and be comfortable. It’s clean and different, but also looks like a real person lives there. ๐ Kudos on the beer making kit.
Your kitchen is beautiful. But I have a totally non-kitchen question – where is your shirt from? I love it!
What a darling and eclectic space! I really like how you painted the green inside your cupboards and think you should take off a few of your cupboard doors! :)Also, the stainless steel counter-tops are superb!
Bless your heart for painting an entire kitchen full of cabinets…twice! It looks great, love all the little details and that one green cabinet!
xoxo

This is incredibly gorgeous, cute, and inviting!!!! I really would like to have your kitchen, thank you very much. ๐ I can’t imagine how much work went into the whole project…something like that would be very daunting to me. Have a beautiful day, ladies!
I love the idea of the cabinets, they look divine and unique
xo
Seriously awesome kitchen. I didn’t even know you could get stainless steel counters. Awesome.
Never would’ve thought of two-colour cabinets, at least in that pattern/shape but they look fabulous. Nice work!
I thought I loved Elsie’s home, but Emma, yours is divine! I love the black and white with pops of color! And the cabinets are so creative. Love it. I can’t wait to see more
I love your copper coffee cups! I collect different mugs so i am so interested to know where they are! oh your coffee cart WHICH might i add, is A FABULOUS IDEA! Hubby and I don’t drink (maybe we will after babies ๐ ) but a coffee cart is such a lovely idea!
I love it! it looks so good!!
That is one badass kitchen
I love your kitchen. I never thought of stainless steel counter tops in a home!

Agggh, I love all the bar carts you guys post. Is this one also thrifted, or have you found them elsewhere? I’m always looking at thrift stores. ๐
Hi- Beautiful kitchen! Where did you find the bar cart?
The place looks absolutely amazing. Loved how you transformed it over time.
Did you get the stainless counter tops at a restaurant supply or is this a option at lowe’s. Very pretty.
I loved the kitchen! But can you tell me where the bar/cart is from? tks ๐
So fun! Emma, quick question: did you have to sand and prime those wood kitchen cabinets before you painted them? What was your process like, and do you have any tips? I’m thinking about tacking painting some old wood kitchen cabinets as well ๐ Thanks!
Dude. Cutest kitchen ever!
I love your interior decorating style. ๐
Love the kitchen in black!!!!!
So amazing work!
I think your kitchen turned out great. I love how you never stop to be creative with your rooms.
Hi Emma!
I absolutely love the top you’re wearing here, and just wondered if you would mind sharing where you purchased it?
Thankyou so much. ๐
Thank you for sharing your kitchen with us, Emma!! I love seeing your tours… And I love that your kitchen looks modern with the black and white and steel, but is still warm and cozy.
I’m wondering… don’t the stainless steel countertops get lots of fingerprints?
I just love the fauxidermy with the stuffed puppy! Is it worth asking where you got it from or is it a one of a kind?
Love your kitchen! Did you find that the countertops were comparable to granite or cheaper/more expensive? We have faux granite as countertops and were looking to upgrade very soon! Thanks!!
love how the inside of the cabinets are green! so cool

You and your sister always make things your own- I love that!
Was it easy to change your hinges? I need to do this and have no idea how to go about starting.
I love it! I’ve been planning for months now how to paint my kitchen. The only thing I knew for sure is I wanted to go black and white. (I also have ugly wood cabinets and black appliances) Inspired by your kitchen, I know now I definitely want to do black on the bottom and white on top. And I love the color inside the cabinets! I’ll definitely be posting when I redo my kitchen http://www.theyearoflivingfabulously.com Can I ask what paint finish you used on the black cabinets? And, did you remove all the doors when you painted? Thanks! -Marie Vlasic
Did you also regrout your tile floor or just use some super dooper cleaner?
The final product is wondrous! Love the pops of colour!
xx
Emma, you’re house is so wonderful! I love that you take risks with your style and really make your home a reflection of your personal style. This is something that my home lacks -mostly because my boyfriend and I have lots of hand-me-down furniture from family and friends. Our home is a hodgepodge of different styles and it drives me crazy! I’m slowly going through room by room and making updates to reflect our shared style. My parents told me over the weekend that they just heard a term to describe my style….wait for it… “hipster”. My boyfriend who’s 90’s punk all the way was horrified. Parents are funny. ๐ Anyway, I’m totaly inspired by your home posts. Keep them coming please!!
Oh what a wonderful kitchen! Love the details your done on your cupboards!!

On the bar cart, are those straws plastic or paper? I’ve been looking all over for cute, colorful, reusable straws, with no luck so far… thanks!
I love a black and white kitchen! Or, any black and white room for that matter. The zig zag separator is a great touch and makes your kitchen so unique – I’ve never seen that before.
where is your lovely bar cart from?!
How and with what kind of paint did you paint your cabinets?
Good morning ladies, and thanks for the tour. I love the paint job on the cabinets…it’s really clever.
Emma, I saw you wearing that grey lace blouse in another post last week…could you tell us where it’s from?
I could slap myself, I just started obsessing over/reading your blog a month or so ago. I use the h-e-double hockey sticks out of your app and never really put it together that there was a blog that started it all. This is my first comment, but it’s because I am literally drooling over your cabinets. This is an amazing idea and I want to copy it because I need it to be seen by my eyeballs every single day. I’d just like to say this is a great, fun blog and I’m so happy to have found it. I recently started a mini bloglette of my own and I hope to be as kickass at it as you two are!
How beautiful! Out of curiosity, where are your cooking tools holders? The white canisters with the gold flecks? I’ve been looking for a fun accent like that for my own kitchen.
I love the detail on the cupboards! It looks like the top of a paper bag. I own the same print you have up behind your drink cart!
Love love love, as always.
Where is that little kitchen cart from?
I really want to know where you got those awesome counters! Love the redo!
love the countertops! was thinking about stainless myself. did u have them custom made or were you able to make overlays for your laminate?
I love how the inside of the cabinets is painted another color!
I LOVE this! It makes me wish I wasn’t renting so I could paint my cabinets! I’m curious about your magnetic knife strip… I’d love to put one up over my stove, because I have NO counterspace or drawer space in my apartment, so it’s so hard to find a place to put all my giant knives. ๐ Where is it from?
Also, how are you cutting on the stainless steel directly? Does that not dull your knives?
Normally I’m not a fan of black and white, but I like how the cabinets are painted!
I love those counters! i live in Springfield and would love to know the contractor you hired and if you recommend them? thanks!
Very beautiful, the cabinets are amazing, what a great idea!
I have a similar cooktop, and I use my cast iron and dutch oven on it all the time, I just take special care to lift them instead of sliding (so I don’t scratch the surface) and to set them down very gently (so I don’t crack the surface). No problems yet!
im soooooo in love with these cabinets. unfortunately im quite a few years away from owning my own place, but im storing away this post until that day comes! love love love!!! xox sydney
We bought a magnetic strip for our knives as well, and love it! It was the perfect fix for our general lack of counter space!
Beautiful! Where did you get the gold spotted utensil holders?
You girls are so crafty I love you

the silver metal cart, with my espresso machine (I’m assuming that’s the one you’re talking about) is vintage from Etsy.
I am shopping around for a new espresso machine and wondered what kind yours is and if you’d recommend it. I also noticed the (burr?) grinder and was curious about it as well. Both are super stylish, and I’d love to know more. Thanks!
Hi- Great kitchen cabinet idea, fresh and new ๐
Where is the cute pug bust from?
Thanks-
Renee
I love your black and white cabinets!!! I absolutely can’t wait to get my own place and start decorating and making it my own. It’s one of the things in my future that I’m most looking forward to! I’ll make sure to keep your room tours in mind for inspiration when the time comes.
I absolutely love that the inside of the cabinets is green. What an awesome surprise. So many great ideas for if I ever actually live in a house I can fix up.
Having lived in Davie for a while now, I am well aware of who or what makes good kitchen cabinets around here. There are some new companies as well who are not much experienced but still do good work. However, if you want to get your kitchen renovated, you should always turn to a reputed kitchen cabinet Davie installer.

Emma, what did you do to change the grout coloring from your “Progress” photo to the current flooring? Did you retile? Thanks! -Rachael
Hi Emma, what an amazing room! I have been thinking about stainless steel counters for our kitchen when we finally get to redo it and wondered where you got yours from? Would you mind sharing please?
thank you!
Gorgeous kitchen! Where did you get your bar cart?
I’ve been dying for the day when I can do my cabinets black on bottom and white on top. Love that look.
This is a really amazing look of your kitchen, thanks for the sharing with us! literally, I will be sharing this post with my circle and friends.
