Homemade Apple Butter (and Giveaway!) (CLOSED)

Easy homemade apple butterOh man, guys, today we’re talking about apple butter. Are you excited? You should be. This is the easiest and most delicious apple butter. You’ll see. And if that doesn’t get you going, hold tight, because we’re also working with the good people at WEMO and giving away a Crock-Pot Smart Slow Cooker with WEMO and a few other prizes (see more details below).

Crock pot apple butter recipeBut first, let’s talk about apple butter for just a second. If you don’t already know, apple butter is basically a more concentrated version of apple sauce. It also has a deeper, richer flavor. My favorite way to eat apple butter is to spread it over a toasted english muffin. But there tons of other ways you can use apple butter like adding it to waffles, oatmeal, or using it in baked goods.

The only draw back is you have to use a lot of apples to get any decent amount of apple butter. So the recipe I’m sharing today makes about 5-6 cups of apple butter. But you need 6 lbs of apples to start with. If you like, you could easily cut this recipe in half. Or make the whole amount and gift some jars of apple butter to friends or coworkers.

Easiest ever apple butterHomemade Apple Butter, makes 5-6 cups.

6 lbs apples
1 cup sugar
1 cup honey
2 teaspoons cinnamon

First peel the apples. Remove the cores and cut into cubes. Place in the Crock-Pot as you work. Once you have all the apples cut up, toss in the sugar, honey, and cinnamon. Place the lid on top and cook on low for 8 hours.

In case you didn’t notice, this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill Crock-Pot. You can control the thing with your phone! In the video you can see how I used the WEMO app to activate my Crock-Pot. It’s black magic I tell you!

Once the cook time is up, use a slotted spoon to remove the apple pieces to a blender. We’re trying to remove some of the liquid that baked out of the apples while they were in the Crock-Pot. This is partially a preference thing, as I prefer my apple butter to be a thick, spreadable paste and not too liquid-y. Puree the apples. Store in jars and refrigerate anything you’re not going to use immediately. A jar of this will keep in the refrigerator for at least two weeks. I have a feeling it may keep longer, but we usually eat all of ours before then… so…yeah.

What’s that? Oh, the giveaway. Here it is:

Belkin Crock Pot giveaway!THE GIVEAWAY: Not only does WEMO have a partnership with Crock-Pot, but they have a whole line of products you can control from your phone with their WEMO app. And one lucky reader is going to win this little goodie bundle:

  • My mother used to make the most delicious roast in her Crock-Pot, and her mom (my wonderful Granny) would make chicken and dumplings in her Crock-Pot. Crock-Pot was such a staple in my life that I didn’t even realize it was a brand name until not that long ago. As a vegetarian, I love roasted root veggies in my mom’s, but I don’t have one in my home now that I’m married and moved away from home. I would love to have one to carry on the tradition! <3 Thanks, ladies, for the wonderful blog!

  • My favorite Crock-Pot dish is roast chicken with vegetables. The kitchen smells wonderful has it cooks.

  • I’ve never used a crockpot before, but I have been thinking about getting one for years, so I don’t have a favorite dish.

  • I love making crock-pot chilli and crock-pot mac n cheese! Crock-pots are so good for making everything!

  • My favorite Crock Pot recipe is something I sort of made up. I throw boneless, skinless chicken thighs in with some red onions, carrots, sweet potatoes or pumpkin or squash and any other fresh veggie I can find. Then I stir in a jar of Trader Joe’s Thai Green Curry simmer sauce. I serve it on top of steamed brown rice. It’s really tasty! I alternate with their Tikka Simmer Sauce, too. It would be even better if I could shut off the Crock Pot with my phone, since even at low my non-digital crock pot will usually overcook it a bit, and I’m usually at work for over 8 hours. So please pick my recipe as the winner of the giveaway! XO

  • I do a wonderful lasagna in the crockpot! You can make it with anything in it, smells and tastes great!!

  • Growing up, my dad made a boubon pork dish in the crock pot – I guess it’s tantamount to today’s pulled pork dishes. When we’d get home from school the entire house would smelled amazing. At dinner, we’d spoon it onto open-face rolls and eat it ‘Sloppy Joe style’.It had just the tiniest kick of heat. Good grief, my mouth is watering now just thinking about it!

  • A crock-pot controlled by your phone?! I hope that means you can control the temperature when you’re out of the house. What a great idea!

  • I’m going to be honest with you here, Emma: I’ve never touched a crock pot before. I’ve stared googly-eyed at one (heck, maybe even a few) of them plenty of times, but I have never had the pleasure of using one myself. We’d provide a loving home for that crock pot, and could even send you a picture update of how it’s doing and what kinds of recipes it’s whipping up in our kitchen!

Place pork and marinade in an electric slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

Remove pork from slow cooker using a slotted spoon; place on a cutting board or work surface. Cover with aluminum foil; keep warm.
