Apples! After yesterdays Caramel Apple Martinis I thought we might all benefit from a more healthy seasonal treat. Apples are super good for you! And I am all for adding candy coating or caramel for a special event but there are plenty of ways to enjoy them. One of my favorite snacks I grab at the grocery store from time to time is apple chips. I thought it might be fun to learn to make these at home, without a dehydrator (simply because I don't own one at the moment).First I thinly sliced two sour apples into a bowl with 4 cups of apple juice and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Soaking the apples will add just a little sweetness, but feel free to use water instead if you don't want to add any sugar. I used a Mandoline to get the apples sliced this thin, but you could also use a sharp knife with a little patience and practice. Allow the apples to soak for 10-12 minutes. Now lay the apple slices on a baking pan lined with a cooling rack. You want the hot air to be able to travel all the way around the apple slice, drying it out as it bakes. Don't layer apples on top of each other because they will stick. Just FYI. You may need to bake a couple of batches depending on how many pans your oven can accommodate. Bake at 350 F for 23-26 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn the heat off and let the oven cool down for a few minutes. Then stick the apples back in the oven for 6-8 minutes to dry out a little more but without all the heat (this helps to prevent them from burning). If you don't consume these all at once be sure to save them in an airtight container. Dry is good but stale is bad. Just saying. Enjoy an apple this season! xo. Emma

Fantastic!
I love dried apples!
Hey Emma!
Great recipe, I made them immediately and they were delicious (ate them all in once), the only problem I experienced was that the slices got stuck to the cooling rack. Do you know what I can do to prevent this from happening?
Such a fun healthy thing to bake for kids… I love it! http://www.bakingincouture.typepad.com
Love this tutorial, thanks for showing how to do this without a dehydrator.
Try soaking them in pineapple juice too, sooo good, and the acid helps keep them from turning so brown π
These look SO yummy…I can’t wait to try them out this weekend!

In spirit of autumn I tried these and they came out so good! I also made a pumpkin dip to go along with them… needless to say it was a match made in heaven.
I posted it on my blog with a recipe
http://turquoisewildflower.blogspot.com
I made these tonight, but they didn’t come out too well. I think I sliced the apples too thin. They dried out but also completely stuck to the cooling rack, so I was only able to get them off as crumbs π . I also made a batch in a normal pan and those ones came off okay, but they cooked a lot faster than the ones on the cooling rack and ended up just a bit too brown. I will try this again, though, because the ones that I *did* get to eat were delicious!
Paige- Oh no! We may have different cooling racks? As mine didn’t stick. But you might try a little non stick cooking spray next time since yours did. Good luck!
They were soo good and a great snack. I`m just slightly saddened because they didn`t turn out as nice as yours, but still a great fall treat!
It didn’t work! π they were sticking to the cooling rack and were not crispy… I failed…
I just had some store bought ones for the first time and I bet these are even better! -jb.
