I've been watching the Simpsons since high school. I always thought there was a decent chance that it was based on Springfield, MO (our hometown). Except we don't have a nuclear power plant like the one Homer works at or a nearby ocean or a neighboring town called Shelbyville. Turns out 34 states in the U.S. have a Springfield, so Simpsons is probably not based on ours.
Bummer. The reason I'm thinking about the Simpsons is because I took these donuts to the office, and everyone was immediatley like, "Homer Simpson donuts!"
What I love about these donuts (other than the fact that they look like Simpsons donuts) is the batter is made with cream so they are extra rich. And the glaze is made with a little raspberry juice, instead of food coloring, giving the glaze its light pink color. They don't really taste like raspberry though, just FYI.Homer Simpson Donuts, makes 30. Adapted from A Baker's Field Guide to Doughnuts (love this book!).
1/4 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil (plus more for frying)
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
6 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups boiling water
3 egg yolks
8 1/2 cups flour
First combine the 1/4 cup warm water and yeast. Give it a few stirs and allow it to sit and bubble for a while. In a large bowl (or the bowl of your mixer) combine the oil, cream, sugar, salt, cinnamon and vanilla extract. Pour the 2 1/2 cups boiling water into the cream mixture and stir to combine. Allow that to cool to room temperature. Stir 1/3 cup of the cream/water mixture in with the egg yolks. Then add the egg yolks to the entire mixture. Begin adding the flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring in between or with your mixer turned on low, until you've added all the flour, and the dough comes together. This dough will appear quite wet and sticky. Move the dough to a lightly oiled bowl and allow to rise in a warm, draft free place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I will sometimes turn my oven on low for a few minutes, then turn it off a few minutes before and store dough that needs to rise in there. You don't want the oven to be hot enough to bake the dough, but the warmth will help it rise.
Divide the dough in half and turn out on a lightly floured surface. Cut out your donuts (and holes! Don't forget the donut holes!) and place on a few baking sheets. Cover and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.Fill a large pot with enough oil that the donuts can float and heat the oil to around 350°F to 375°F. I use a candy thermometer to check my oil. You can also test the oil by frying the donut holes first. You want the dough to cook all the way through within 30 seconds on each side, without burning. Once your oil is ready, start frying those donuts! After frying remove them to a plate or baking sheet covered in paper towels to soak up any excess oil.
Pink Glazes, makes about 2 1/3 cups.
1/2 cup butter
3 tablspoons milk
1 tablespoon fresh raspberry juice
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 1/2 ounces white chocolate
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
First extract the raspberry juice from a heaping handful of raspberries. Place them in a mug or small bowl and microwave for 10-12 seconds to soften them. Press through a fine mesh seive to remove the seeds. In a pot over medium heat combine the butter, milk, raspberry juice, corn syrup and vanilla. Stir until melted. Then turn th heat down to low and add the chocolate. Stir until melted. Remove from heat and begin whisking in the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time. Allow to cool slightly before use.Dunk the donuts in the glaze and then place on a cooling rack. Add sprinkles. You have to. It's part of the recipe. I swear. Now devour the donuts. Don't tell anyone how many you ate. Take the rest to friends. These are best eaten the day they are made, so don't be afraid to share. 🙂 Enjoy! xo. Emma

So funny…I always thought that the Simpson’s were based on my hometown too (Springfield, IL). We even have a town nearby called Shelbyville, but, alas, I don’t think it was based on us either. HAHA. Love these donuts.

I love the non-food coloring color option! I’m actually not a huge donut fan, but these do look Yum.
I am so making these, they look gorgeous, could you kindly advise about the flour, as I am British, we have plain flour and self raising do you know which I should use, thanks very much,Iona x
Springfield is loosely based on Portland, Oregon which is Matt Groening’s hometown. I think the most notorious example of this is that there’s a street in Portland called NE Flanders St. and people regularly vandalize it to say NED Flanders. I don’t think Groening’s ever said if that’s specifically where he got the name, but it’s still a good story.
Ha ha! Yes , they are Simpson donuts!
When i went to NYC, i found pink donuts, very big ones, i bought one but i do not like at all…
I will try this one, they looks delicious!
OMG! Yet more yummy dougnut goodness you share! I did your red velvet and carrot ones a few months ago and they were amazing!!!

They look amazing, probably going to have to try my hand at making these. Plus, who doesn’t love The Simpsons! x
Those look delish! Here’s some info on Simpson’s Springfield… http://news.yahoo.com/simpsons-creator-real-springfield-oregon-205707652.html
We here in Eugene Oregon think the Simpsons is based on the town right next to ours – Springfield Oregon. I once read an interview where he stated that he grew up in that town and that some of the characters he created are based on people from his school. And I guess the nuclear plant near Portland is the one that is depicted in the show…
Oh yeah, and there is a bar in Springfield that looks just like Moe’s!
Those look JUST LIKE the Simpsons donuts!! Also, it’s based on Springfield, Oregon, since Matt Groening is from Portland. 🙂
Those look absolutely delicious!
Mm, these look delicious!
They totally look like the donuts from the Simpsons! My mouth is watering just looking at the pictures!
Omg! How good can donuts look!! 😀

These look so cute! I’m sure I’ll have to practice lots before they look this good… bummer that i’ll have to eat all those donuts in the meantime 😉 Perfect! xo
Looks yum but you didn’t say what to do with the bloomed yeast. I’m assuming you can add it to the cooled cream mixture?
Pink sprinkle donuts are my favorite. I’m drooling right now.
Yummy! These look so delicious!
These look ahhhgghghghh-mazing! (<<< that was my impression of the Homer donut drooling noise) I want to make them every morning! I didn't see in the directions when you are supposed to add the yeast mixture to the dough? I'm sure I could figure it out, but I want to make sure I get it right! Thanks! Laura
These are SO cool!!
http://fairygobmother.blogspot.co.uk/
Love this and love The Simpsons! I can just hear Homer drooling over these donuts right now:)
Yes. So much yes.
Yep, Simpsons is Oregon for sure. Many streets in Portland are characters from the show: Flanders, Lovejoy, etc. The nuclear cooling towers were modeled after the ones at Trojan. Here’s a link to their destruction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf2J6-729Qw
Perfect pictures!
this donuts looks sooo delicious!

I’ve never gotten that into the Simpsons, but my friend LOVES the show! In fact, she can quote almost every episode. I’m definitely planning on making these for her as a surprise! I might not be a huge fan of the Simpsons, but I do love donuts!

Those do look amazing!
And here is some fun info about the Simpsons.
Matt Goerning grew up in Corvallis Oregon which is about an hour north of Springfield Oregon. Corvallis has a town 10 miles away called Albany where there is no nuclear power plant but there is a Warehauser paper mill which makes the town stink and everyone makes fun of the town for being strange and filled with hicks. Springfield is actually the more hickish cousin to Eugene Oregon which is filled with hippies. I have lived or worked in all of these places.
All of the characters’ last names come from the streets of Portland Oregon. The Terwilliger curves are the most famous (and dangerous) which gave their name to Sideshow Bob Terwilliger.
And those are you Simpsons fun facts for the day!
http://images.free-extras.com/pics/h/homer_simpson_and_donut-1090.png
wooow, they really look like the ones Homer Simpson eats! Yummi! Great work!:)
OMG this is sooo “pinnable!” This will be in my to do list! 🙂
Those look delish! The Simpson locations are inspired by the Portland area. If you’re ever headed that way, Google around to find the locations of some Simpsons- and Matt Groening-related landmarks, like an etched BART in a sidewalk outside his high school. Fun stuff. 🙂 (I don’t live there, but when I travel, I obsessively seek out offbeat tourist stops. It’s way fun.)
Many of the character names from the Simpsons are based on streets in Portland Oregon! Flanders, Lovejoy, etc!
My boyfriend and I had a problem with the doughnuts. We took the doughnuts in the hot oil.A few minutes later they were brown outside and inside the dough was raw. can you help us elsie? 🙂
Am I missing when to add the yeast to the mixture? I’m in the middle of the recipe and not sure where to add it. I guess I will add it to the cream/oil mixture once it cools to room temp, before adding flour.
Its Springfield, Vermont! The nuclear center is Vermont Yankee (which is closing down soon!) I went to school in Burlington, and my bf at the time told me how gas stations got outfitted to have the same name as the one in the show. Those look delish, though!
Just seen this in your september recap and.. on the “to do” list.
Like, IMMEDIATELY.
Yum.
