Elbow patches are one of my favorite trends this season! Last month, I shared how to hand print hearts on your jeans and we recieved many requests for a patch tutorial! I asked Amanda to show you how she would do it in this next feature…. Enjoy!
Supplies needed: cardigan, fabric (this is a great way to use scraps!), fabric marker/crayon, 1 sheet of card stock, scissors, pins, embroidery thread and embroidery needle.
1. Using the fabric marker, mark an X on each sleeve of your cardigan right at the point of your elbow.
2. Cut a heart out of card stock to use as a stencil, making sure it fits perfectly on the sleeves of your cardigan. Resize if necessary.
3. Cut two hearts from fabric, using stencil. 4. Pin a heart to each sleeve of your cardigan, making sure the center of the heart is placed over the X you made earlier. 5. Stitch all the way around the heart with embroidery thread. You could also use a sewing machine! I really wanted a "handmade" look, so I hand stitched mine.
6. Repeat on the other sleeve, and your restyled cardigan is finished and ready for fall! 🙂
Thanks so much, Amanda! I love how your cardigan turned out. The floral details are just perfect!
Happy Monday, everyone…. xo. Elsie

definably going to have to try this idea for the winter season.
elbow patches always make an outfit.
love this, have been wanting to do hearts on sleeves for years (; thanks for the cute, easy tutorial!!
I have always adored elbow patches, and they have become a necessity since rolling my sleeves up constantly tends to make them split. Thanks for the tutorial!
So tempted to do this – they’re so adorable!

Ahh! That’s so cute!
So cute, love it!
Can I ask how you would do it with a sewing machine without stitching to the other side of the sleeve? My head cannot wrap itself around how??
This is so perfect. I love elbow patches!
Cute idea 🙂

xo,

Q: Can I ask how you would do it with a sewing machine without stitching to the other side of the sleeve? My head cannot wrap itself around how??
A: You would have to pull the sleeve open while sewing, so your sweater would need to be nice and stretchy! 😀 The other option would be to cut the seam and them re-stitch the seam after you put on your patch!
Hand stitching is easier, of course! XO
…and of course, if you already have a hole in your elbow through wear (just can’t throw out my favourites still), this is a really nice way to extend the life of your sweaters/cardigans…
So cute! love it!
Love this!!!!
Very cute!
This is SO great! Adds a whole new look to a completely generic sweater. And so easy!! I’m definitely going to have to give this one a try!

I Love this! i just did it on one of my own cardigans that was getting a bit old, and it added a new lease of life and made the faded-ness look like it was meant to be. I also assed a pocket in the matching Fabric and it turned out to be super cute!
Sweet idea!
I love elbow patches… it looks so british:)
Oh my goodness, it’s so simple but I never would have thought of doing it myself.
I will do this the minute I get the opertunity. I’m pretty certain I have a store of spare fabric which would be perfect for this.
Cute! Gonna do this on my daughter’s stockings!
Cuteness! Thanks so much for sharing. Now I’m thinking up other designs (stars!) that could be made. Super fun.
I’ve had this page bookmarked for weeks since I saw it on College Fashion. I thought the idea was absolutely adorable, but I never thought I would have the time/fabric to do it. A few hours ago, though, I found some scrap fabric from my sewing class two years ago. I just finished, and have come back here to thank you so much for posting this. THANK YOU! I’m not a good sewer by any means, so it was a little difficult trying to sew in the middle of the sleeve. So I used a hot glue gun. Not sure how it’s gonna come out in the wash D:
Would love to feature this tutorial on the Vintage Sheet blog.. please lmk if that is ok:)
<3 I'm doing this!
ahh i did it, but the patches are falling off after only a couple hours of wearing it!
d’aaaw sokute! I came across this site today and am so motivated for a lot of projects right now! I’m definitely going to do this…. but with bees on my knees.
I love your blog! Every single post is special:) Would you mind if i used some of your DIY photos on my blog? Thanks!
I’ve got to do this! I lean my left elbow on my desk at work and all my shirts/sweaters are wearing out there!
Love! Did this project as soon as I saw it! turned out so cute. Can’t wait to try the similar knee patch DIY. Love your blog SO much! <3

Thanks for sharing this! I did this project a week or two ago and I got SO many compliments on it at school! Such a good idea! Now I am going to try either the floral boots, the color blocked shoe, or the glitter shoes. Thanks for the ideas!
This tutorial just saved my favorite jumper’s life! Thanks!
Ps. Love your blog, thanks for all the lovley ideas!
more often: I mean, I see a lot of “oh, no, now girls are going to have effed up ideas about love!” Well, um. The guys I liked when I was Bella’s age? Not exactly selrting examples of young manhood. I grew out of it. Yes. People are stupid. People will always be stupid. A book does not influence people to make the wrong decisions. And: But the more important point is that hating on someone for being a fan and anointing yourself as the person who gets to decide who and who does not get to enter the clubhouse is the real dick move. I had to stop reading the Internets during SDCC because I wanted to throttle every asshole who complained about the TWILIGHT fans ruining Comic Con. As Jeff might say, STFU nerds. Jesus. If anyone should be supporting TWILIGHT fans, it’s members of other fandoms.

What do you use to keep the edges of the heart from fraying?
One of my really good frdines lives by those clogs I think she may even have a few pair. They are super comfy and I like how you made this look cute and girly with the touch of red. I totally had a “ME TOO!” moment when you mentioned Diner’s, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I love that show and I make a list of places I need to go to everytime I watch lolxoxoFAKE EMPIREwww.shopfake.com
I totally sluebtmd upon your blog while searching for local inspiration for my own and its wonderful! Then, I realized that I met you when I picked up my little ceramic love from Courtney last week! Hope things are looking up for you, Spring sometimes ushers in new winds!
Aaah. Life sure can be sucksville sommitees. I think there is something in the air..globally. Sucky crapola seems to be making it’s way around.I really hope that you manage to find a few moment sin each day that can make you feel truly awesome.Your quilt is lovely! It must be nice to wake up to in the mornings. A good start each day!
I have to ask–how on earth did you keep your hair looking so wnuferdol throughout the pregnancy? If you tell me that’s your natural haircolor, I’ll probably call you a liar, or at least be very jealous. I’m at week 14 of my first pregnancy and stumbled on your blog when looking for how to create an upholstered headboard. And I’m officially an avid follower of All Things G&D! Congratulations on your little one! It’s very exciting to read about your pregnancy as I progress through my own (and to see your beautiful end result…named after Kate Spade? 😉 Be honest.) -Jaime

Kelly, you’re so adorable and SO tltaneed. My word. Love all your sewing projects. And i had to leave a comment on Leah’s blog after I saw your comment about my sis’s wedding dress. My mom is SO amazing and the things she sews are just out of this world. I wish I had learned a thing or two from her, but I refused to pay attention growing up and swore I’d NEVER sew things for my kids. Can you say “regret”?Enjoy your sunny Christmas and it is FREEEEEEZING here. Came out of nowhere and it’s NOT pleasant. Keep the entertainment coming@

You look so cute! I love the top, and the skirt looks great like that :)I have my share of nightmare puircte days too — my boyfriend takes mine, but I absolutely hate it if anyone is around watching. Even if someone walks by, I stop posing and go all awkward ;)M xo
I am the exact same way when it comes to clothes. I have to match and all the crools have to “go together” in a neat and organized way. I’m trying to break myself of this. Sometimes I’ll be a little daring and try to thrown on some shoes that don’t match exactly perfect. I usually second guess myself until I take them off. Also, I love turquoise. It’s one of my new favorite crools. And turquoise and red are a killer combo!
I am fairly new to your blog, and i already love it!! But i need something sweet for my mom for her birthday!! Something that would be easy to make but thoughtful. Thanks!!!
