Earlier this month we got to work on a bunch of style posts with our dear friend AnnaRose Kern. AnnaRose is a professional makeup artist and hairstylist based in Los Angeles. She works on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Sing-Off, America's Next Top Model, and The Hunger Games, to name a few. She is also an experienced consultant in cosmetic development, working with brands like Kat Von D for Sephora and Julie Hewett Cosmetics. All the ladies of ABM felt like we learned a TON while she was in town, and we can't wait to share her tips and expert advice with you in the coming months!
Today AnnaRose is sharing how to achieve these beachy-looking waves. Take it away!
Doing beach waves with a flat iron isn’t exactly a new style, but here is my favorite twist on it. This works great on long or short hair!
1. Start with clean, dry hair. Apply heat protector as you go to keep hair healthy!
2. Section out your hair. Because mine is short, I typically just clip up the top, but if you have longer hair you might need to do three sections. I like to work my way up from the bottom, but you can section however you feel comfortable.
3. Take a 1-inch section of hair and bend it away from your face with the iron.
Now here's the key to this look. Only go about 3/4 of the way down your hair—don’t curl all the way to the ends!
4. The next section you take should be the same size, but curl it in the OPPOSITE direction of the previous. This will give your hair tons of movement and body and keep your waves from clumping together!
5. Repeat this process until all of your hair is curled.
6. Stick your hands in your hair and mess it up! Don’t be afraid! You’re not going to ruin your curls; it shouldn’t look perfect anyways! Break apart the waves and style it with your fingers to a shape you like. You can use some styling cream here for definition if you like.
7. Take your flat iron and just tap the very ends of your hair to make sure they’re straight. The straight ends add a cool, modern edge to this beachy look.
8. Lock it in with a little hairspray, and you’re good to go! (Above you can see the products I used.)
I love this look because it's quick and easy and works on every length. The bend in the middle of the hair adds movement without looking too “done.” xo.

Thanks for showing a girl with shorter hair! Mine is about this length, so I’m definitely going to give it a try. Any tips for avoiding the straightener line? (I have really thin hair, so I can easily get a crease with flat irons).

Love this look but I guess I am a spaz and dont get it, do you keep moving the flat iron down as you go or just bend it away from your face and pull it down like you would if you are straightening your hair?

Hey guys. Just an idea I would love to see ABM hair tutorials as videos. Every move is the key for this thing so we can see all. I read a lot about beachy waves cause it’s a huge science for the girls :))) till I watched a video ( it was the same tutorial as yours. ) and I really learnt how to make it. I love ABM hair tutorials and I would love to see them on the screen 😉
I love this look! I used to do flat iron curls quite a bit when my hair was shorter.. it’s such a quick, low maintenance, great style to rock.

I use my flat iron to curl my hair although it isn’t a GHD so it isn’t quite as whizzy and simple as it could be! I like using the flat iron because it allows me to straighten my fringe at the same time, and I don’t need to have two different tools on the go every time!
Ive always loved the beachy waves look. But I’ve never been able to make my hair do it. Maybe this way will finally work!

Try to not squeeze the iron closed right away. Go down your hair shaft for a second with the blades almost touching then close the iron. It works every time but takes some patience.
Great idea! I usually make curls with the flat iron but I normally go all the way down the hair. I’ve never tried to go just 3/4. But it looks really great! I’ll try it in the next couple of days. Thanks for sharing!
