today was just right. i took my boyfriend's advise and had a good dose of alone time to think and plan about our upcoming adventures. i filled up a few pages in my journal and then had a long conversation with him that cleared my brain. our plans have just changed SO many times over the past six months, but i think i am finally at peace and ready to move forward! i'll share more when the time is right. thanks for reading. XO. els

ps. also thanks for the great movie recommendations. what are your favorite movies from the 50s and 60s? i'm in the mood…

  • Ok, it’s not for the 50’s or 60’s, but Summer Lovers with Peter Gallagher is a pretty good (and a tad cheesy) 80’s movie! Glad you got to clear your head.

  • I’m so happy you had a chance to clear your brain, I bet you feel wonderful! I adore your pictures, it looks like sweet alone time. <3

    Love and Turtledoves,
    Jaco

  • Oh my gosh! Favorite movies? Farrrr too many to list from those decades! I really fell in love with Julie Christy in “Darling” for sure. It’s pretty, and it’s pretty sad, and pretty cool. I dunno, it’s not for everyone, though.

  • Taking a day to just clear your head and do nothing (technically) productive is always amazing. I would’ve loved to do that today, but it was extremely hot and the air smelled like smoke due to a nearby fire. Maybe some other day, but I’m glad you got your “me-day” in.

    P.S. I love that quilt!

  • My go-to feel-good old movies are the original “Parent Trap” (the one with Haley Mills), and “Beach Blanket Bingo.” If you have never watched BBB, you will love it! It’s cute and the songs are so fun!

  • A Hard Day’s Night- It always makes me smile. 🙂
And you can’t go wrong with The Beatles, I think.

  • The 50’s and 60’s was such a great time for films, so it’s hard to choose favorites. French cinema was on fire, so I suggest Le Mepris, Breathless, and Une Femme est Une Femme. Also, you can never go wrong with The Graduate, Harold and Maude, The Seven Year Itch, or even the slapstick Beatles flick, Help!

  • I second The Seven Year Itch & A Hard Day’s Night! Add to my list The Great Escape–starring a young James Gardner (SWOON) & Steve McQueen.

  • “Walk Don’t Run (1966)” – One of my top ten favorite movies. It’s Cary Grant playing matchmaker at the British embassy in Tokyo during the ’64 Olympic Games, and it’s freaking hilarious.

  • Elsie, you HAVE to see Auntie Mame w/Rosalind Russell! So silly, fun and the BEST wardrobe eva! Barefoot in the Park is also so incredible! Both are my faves of ALL time! Enjoy!

  • I get it. I really do. I’m glad you have someone to ground you and love you for you. That’s what I feel most thankful for. 😀

  • umbrellas of cherbourg….. french movie, visually amazing

  • Surprised nobody has mentioned Roman Holiday yet 🙂 1953, Audrey Hepburn, so perfect ♥

  • I was named for the Audrey Hepburn movie “Sabrina” so of course, I must recommend that one. And another Audrey movie, “Charade”, is one of my favorites!

  • i want to go on a picnic with you. seriously… like this fall. your pictures are magical. how do you do post them like that? swoon.!

  • I’m a sucker for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. So glad you took some time for yourself. It’s always good to take a step away from things so you can declutter your thoughts.

  • “Back Street” with Susan Hayward, Lana Turner, and John Gavin. It is a wonderful movie that requires a box of tissue.

“Love is a Many Splendored Things” with William Holden

“An Affair to Remember” with Cary Grant

They don’t make movies like this anymore. Closest thing is “Shining Through” with Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith.

  • My favourite old films are The Pajama Game and Walk Don’t Run (Cary Grant, absolutely hilarious)

  • “Rear Window” with Grace Kelly is really good…and she is just so stylish, beautiful, and fun to watch. It is an Alfred Hitchcock thriller.

  • I am not really sure when those films were made, but I love:

    Casablanca
    African Queen
    Brigadoon
    we´re no angels

you see, except one, all with humprey bogart…;-)

and if you want something earlier, check “car of dreams” from i think 1936!

    xoxo trine

  • So glad you had such a great down day..as more movies

    High Society

    Gigi

    My Fair Lady

and Meet Me in St Louis.

Can’t go wrong with those movies..you always finsih them feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside!

  • I’m sure already mentioned but The Graduate! When I was like 18..19…20 or around there, my mother strongly suggested this movie to me. I became obsessed with it. I would wear my hair like Elaine does in the movie and wear a lot of eye liner. I’ll always love that movie.

  • I love your blog Elsie, and visit it everyday! Usually about 2 or 3 times just incase there are additional posts. Its positive and pretty!

Anyway my film recommendations aren’t all from the 50s or 60s, the first 2 are from the 40s but they’re both brilliant!

Meet me in St Lois (1944) – think a couple of people have recommeded this one!

Under the Clock (1945) – another Judy Garland, a sweet story of a soldier on 2 day leave and who meets Alice (i think thats her name) and they fall in love!

All About Eve – someone else also recommeded this, such a fab film!

    Love Hayley x

  • I have lots of favorites, but I would definitely say “Gidget” (the 1959 version with Sandra Dee), “12 Angry Men” (1957 version with Henry Fonda), “Rebel Without a Cause” (James Dean is truly amazing – he’s also amazing in “East of Eden”), and “A Streetcar Named Desire” (a young Marlon Brando is the greatest thing you will ever see – seriously).

Old movies were so much better in many ways than movies of today – they didn’t need special effects because the acting and story lines were so well done. Can’t wait to hear what you watch. 🙂

  • I would suggest “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” with Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. A Classic.

  • I’d recommend the movie “The Party” with Peter Sellers. A fun, late 60’s movie. Awesome clothes and set decor!

  • Not made in the 60s, but set in the 60s, is Shag. My girlfriends and I used to watch it all the time. It’s about four girls who go on a road trip to Myrtle Beach before heading their separate ways to college, marriage, etc. Love it.

  • one of my favorites is Jules et Jim with Jeanne Moreau. Gorgeous…Amelie’s narrative style was based on this movie.

  • Just watched “Roman Holiday” the other night with my girl. Love a good musical, too!

  • I already left one comment, but forgot to include two of my favorites – “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “National Velvet.” My favorite Audrey Hepburn movies so far are “Roman Holiday” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

  • I can’t wait till it stops raining because I plan on doing the same!

My life has been changing so much, moving to a different state, starting a new job, learning cake decorating, leaving the cake shop I started with, planning my own business, getting a puppy, painting, crafting, breathing! haha

  • I love love love “How to marry a millionaire” from 1953, I think.
It’s just so wonderfully ridiculous and adorable.

  • beautiful pictures and quilt. i need a day like that soon. can’t wait to hear your plans. i love plans.

my only recommendations are alfred hitchcock!! rear window is a fave.

  • I think you’d like any of the Rock Hudson & Doris Day romances of the 60s. They are cute, fun and stylish.

If you liked Roman Holiday, try “Three Coins in the Fountain”, also set in Rome. My absolute fave movie of all time is Katherine Hepburn’s Summertime, set in Venice. OMG, it is beautiful!

  • My favourite movie of all time just happens to be from that era, it’s called Gidget. It’s the cutest little surfing movie ever. I know for a fact it is available on iTunes!

  • oh i have too many favourite old movies, but right now one i am really in the mood for is “Too Catch a Thief”…it is wonderful!!!

  • I need to do that this weekend, hopefully it will be warm! (I’m in San Francisco and it still feels like winter!) And I looove the quilt. So excited that you’re coming to Renegade SF! You’re such an inspiration, so excited to meet you!

  • when I was young there was a show called “The Early Show” that was on at 3:30 (after school), it showed old movies. I loved when they had “theme” weeks, and my favorites were the Elvis movies (so cheesy and fun), and the “surf” week, which was the Frankie and Annette movies, or the Gidget movies. And of course, I loved the “Tammy” week – my sister and I were named after the Tammy movie with Debbie Reynolds (I’m Tammy, she’s Debbie). I love the silly movies they made back then…

  • I’m sort of a big fan of the old “thrillers.” So I would suggest: The Birds, The Wolfman or The Hound of the Baskervilles!! For a non-thriller I always enjoy the Disney classic: watch Mary Poppins 😉

  • It’s from 1942, but Now Voyager with Bette Davis is exquisite. I watched it two days ago, in fact!

  • Ok, I don’t usually post comments, but couldn’t resist giving a movie recommendation! It’s from the 40’s, but possibly my faovirte movie of all time: Arsenic and Old Lace, with Carey Grant. He’s absolutely hysterical, and can always turn my day around 🙂

  • I love love love Singin’ in the Rain and Gidget is one of my all time favorites it’s just so fun and summery! I also love Rear Window

  • Ah la la, I love to watch Paris When it Sizzles in the summertime! Audrey Hepburn and William Holden run pell-mell all over the city and their imaginations. It’s so cute and fun and I think her Givenchy clothes from that film and How to Steal a Million are my favorites!

  • Summertime starring Katherine Hepburn. I am going to a review of it on my blog soon. Love this movie.
Here are some others from 50’s and 60’s off the top of my head that I love:
A Place in The Sun – Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift
Summer Stock – Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.
The Barretts of Wimpole Street- Jennifer Jones
Paris Blues – Sidney Poitier and Paul Newman
The Misfits – Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.

  • The Apartment…I just watched it last weekend and it’s ADORABLE!!!

BTW Thanks for asking about movies, cause I was going to ask the same question and now I don’t have toooooooo (plus a lot more people respond to your posts haha)

  • “On the Town” If nothing else for the beautiful costumes. But it’s worth it regardless!

  • Elsie, you inspire me like none other. Your posts have a lot of meaning and genuine love. Keep on keepin’ on…<3

p.s. I love all Jerry Lewis films (The Bellboy, Nutty Professor, etc.) and classic Disney movies (The Ugly Dachshund, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan).

  • I love a good old movie…love heaps that have been listed but discovered a lovely movies last mth called Gypsie Colt. Guessingits made in the 50’s.

Its about a girl + her horse. Its a goodie for the whole family too!! The horse is a super actor!!

  • hi-ya! “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help!” are great 60’s flicks. I saw them both recommended and had to second that! I know you asked for 50’s and 60’s movies, but “The Outsiders(1983)” is also amazing if you can deal with the violence and language!
