I mentioned a while back that we had to reconfigure a couple of our bedrooms to make space for Marigold’s room. This was always a part of our plan—well, loose plan since, but I still spent several weeks trying to envision how to best combine rooms and not lose any function.
We moved the playroom stuff out of this room to give Marigold a space and we combined it with our kiddo guest room. So now we have a playroom/guest room! The majority of the playroom stuff that we were using was our art stuff. So we did a big toy clean out and donated anything we weren’t using. We moved the dolls into this room and stored some of the other toys (like blocks and dolls) in Marigold’s bedroom.
We added the shelves from our previous playroom as well as this built-in desk to use as an art space. Making art is one of my biggest priorities. And even though I could 100% do it in the dining room or in other rooms, I like having a devoted space for it and wanted to keep that as the main function of this space. At 3 years old, Nova is still much more interested in art than toys.
We also painted the bunk beds green. I was enjoying a chance to switch things up. The new color is Fresh Balsam by Sherwin Williams.
We squeezed as much function into this room as possible. Our little IKEA chalkboard sits in the corner, our costume collection and more art supplies are hidden in the closet, and we added under-the-bed toy storage.
Making art is our happy place!
These Calico Critters are our main toy collection. Nova has been very slow to get interested in toys. At first, it was just blocks and puzzles, then the pig phase. And just recently she became obsessed with the little animals and it is the CUTEST thing ever. We spend hours on the bunk beds where she thinks of names for every single animal. Some of their names are Coco, Taco, Butterfly, Sun Sun, Pineapple and the baby animals are all called “baby” … ugh—so so cute.
Love her and love this season of life!
The trundle drawers store so much STUFF. We have some more calico critters stuff (a bus and a car), another dollhouse, a bunch of Blythe dolls and clothes for them. And they still have a lot of space to go, so I’m really happy we added them. We painted them to match the bunk beds so they’d all family together.

How cute. Nova looks so tall. ????
Awe! She’s definitely hit a growth spurt this season. 🙂
Can you talk more about the long desk? Did you construct it yourself, is it just a board/shelf?
Yes! Collin built it for me. Very similar steps to this- http://abeautifulmess.com/2018/07/built-in-computer-desk-diy.html xx!
I love the green bed! It’s a lovely shade. So nice to see the Sylvanian Families there as well – I loved them growing up! 😉 ????

This is really CUTE Elsie! It always looks so perfect. I guess it’s called a photo shoot, not a reality photo shoot. Haha!
May I ask where you put the pink velvet sofa!? Love that sofa!
Hi Jill, Yes- definitely a styled photo shoot. But the room doesn’t look that different in daily life- just 25% messier. 🙂
When we no longer had room for the pink sofa we gave it to a friend. 🙂 xx
I like those trundle drawers and they are just what I’m looking for in my girl’s room, but the link just takes you to trundle bunk beds 🙁 are they from amazon also? Very cute room!
Yes! The exact ones had sold out, so try just searching “trundle drawer” on Amazon.
Hi, I love it! We also have an art station with enough room for 3 kids and it is perfect for playdates. My daughter’s favorite part is that I added a lazy susan with containers for their favorite supplies for them to both easily reach.
BUT… I mostly want to ask about the bed. I was already looking at that same bed on Amazon! Do you find it to be sturdy?
A lazy susan is a great idea!
Yes- the bed is A+ quality. We’re very happy with it. It’s been tested by like 10 kids at once during our parties too- it’s their favorite thing to climb on. haha
Love it!
where did you get the hanging shelf / storage on the bunk bed?
Hi! It’s a garden box we made as a DIY http://abeautifulmess.com/2016/06/felt-succulent-window-box-diy-1.html xx!
Hi! At what age would you recommend crafting scissors? My son is very deft with his hands and LOVES trying to play with scissors. He is 2y 4 months. Anything else apart from painting and cutting/ scrapbooking that we could try with him. He loves his art classes at Gymboree.
Nova started at two and a half (when we adopted her). As long as they’re fully supervised I’d think that’s a good age to begin trying. It takes a LONG time to develop scissor skills (we’re still working) so don’t get discouraged. High fives!!
My seven year old is still “nuts for critties!” (Her words:)) Did you make the house shelf you have them displayed on or did you buy it somewhere? I have been trying to think of a cute way to display ours and this would fit the bill for sure!
Hi! I got it from Urban Outfitters last fall. It’s not in stock anymore, but they have a heart one now. Also Etsy probably has some! xx
Have you thought about holztiger or ostheimer animals instead of the calico critters? Both brands are beautiful display pieces in addition to being safe for both girls to play with. I think a grimms pastle rainbow would also be a nice addition to this beautiful room.
I love that brand too. xx
Love love love this room! Kiddo spaces are my favorite and you always do such a nice job ????????????????
So cute! Where do you keep the paper and other art supplies that don’t fit in the jars?
In the top of the closet that’s closed. There’s a basket of markers, more paint, paper etc up there. I also keep craft kits if we get them and she’s not old enough for them yet. 🙂 xx
I was trying to get a good look at the art station wall. What materials did you use? I assume it was easy to install everything on top of it. This room looks great and I can’t wait to put some of these ideas in place!
Nova reminds me SO much of my daughter at three years old in regards to her choice of toys and preferring art. My daughters favorite toy was a small little house that folds up and comes with a few accessories and two little people who are same size as the calico critters. It’s by Sango and we have Jinja’s house but they now have a farm one that looks SO adorable. When you need a gift idea for Nova, you should check it out. My daughter played with her Sango Mini house for a solid year. It has held up and she still loves it!
I love this so much! Cute, simple, and a perfect place to play and create art! I especially love the built in desk and art wall. And that shelf for the calico Critters is adorable.
This room is adorable!! I love that wallpaper. Thanks for sharing, hope you are having a lovely day!!

This is such a cute room! and that green bed – I would never have thought it would look so good. I think you’ve mentioned this before but where did you get the gorgeous fake kid plants from at the end of the bed? Or are they made? Thanks for sharing this!
Hi! It’s a DIY from the blog. Here’s the link- http://abeautifulmess.com/2016/06/felt-succulent-window-box-diy-1.html
What a luxury to have a guest room just for kids! I think it looks wonderful!

I love what you did to this room. I really need to do bunk beds for my boys but I am having trouble find anything because our apartment has low celings. I love the color you picked for the beds too.
Super cute!!!
How many bedrooms do y’all have?
The room is gorgeous but I just want to say: NOVA IS THE CUTEST <3 <3 <3
