Recently I saw a fun idea on Pinterest involving hash browns and waffle irons. I'm a MAJOR hash brown fan. It's probably one of my favorite foods in the whole world. If I go out for breakfast and hash browns aren't on the menu, I feel a little let down. I guess it's the country girl in me. (Actually, I don't really know if hash browns are considered "country food" by most people. What do you think?)Because of my deep love for hash browns, I was excited to give this a try. I saw quite a few different people sharing their tips and tricks, and I wanted to see what worked best for me. Here are my results:I used this waffle iron. I set it on 5, which is one of the hottest settings. I used store-bought hash browns (fresh, not frozen). First I put the uncooked hash browns in a mixing bowl and added a few tablespoons of oil. Just enough that every piece got coated but wasn't dripping with excess oil. I then seasoned them with a little salt and pepper. Then I cooked them in the hot waffle iron for twice as long as I would waffles (mine has a timer that goes off, so I just doubled that time). You can check them as they cook, so they can get as crispy as you prefer. We found that a thicker layer of hash browns (than what is pictured above) worked best, but don't overdo it or else the inside can get too mushy.I'm really glad I stumbled across this idea and tried it out. I love how easy it is and how it can free you up to focus on cooking your eggs instead of watching to pans. If you like hash browns, give this a try and let us know what you think. xo. Emma

I saw this on Good Eats and have been sold on it since! These look great 🙂
What a neat idea! I will have to try this sometimes!

Fantastic idea! I am going to make some right now! Thanks!
I love hash browns! I am the same way when I go out to breakfast… if I can’t eat hash browns then something is wrong.
AH. I looove hashbrowns. I’m the same way when I go out and they aren’t on the menu! However I live in New England, so I’m not sure if it’s a country thing! I am always making them, but a waffle iron? Best idea ever. Tomorrow b-fast for sure!

I really need to purchase a waffle iron, that thing does magic with literally anything.

I was so hoping you were going to have a tip to make this foolproof – the idea is so appealing. I tried it and didn’t have much success. My results were very meh and took so long. Maybe my waffle iron is to blame. Don’t think I will be trying it again.
Great idea! I love hash brown for brunch, but watching the pan can be tedious.
Thanks for sharing this!

I adore hash browns and found an American diner that does them 5 minutes from my flat! In heaven (and we ate them there on Sunday too!)

hahah great idea! 😀

Crazy! I am not a huge hashbrown fan because I grew up with breakfast potatoes since my mom was from Texas. But my husband LOVES hashbrowns. I will definitely have to give this a try….once I find a waffle iron 🙂
Great idea for the waffle maker, I make cinnamon rolls for my husband all the time on ours. So really they’re more of cinnamon roll waffles, but either way they are delicious and SO easy to make.
Looks like I just found what I’m making for this weekends breakfast!
nomnom. what a good idea!
My local brunch spot does amazing hash browns – called hangover hashbrowns and they are delicious – I keep meaning to try out the other things on the menu but I the hashbrowns get me every time!!

I was just talking to the hubby about this last night! I’m so doing this. Thanks for the tutorial.
I’m from Northern Europe so for me anything fried or baked or sweet for breakfast is a big no-no 😀 but I have an American friend who absolutely adores these and makes them once a week – for a student whose parents don’t even own an oven I think that’s pretty good! 😀
I tired this too (before starting Paleo) and it didn’t hold a waffle shape like I’ve seen pictured on Pinterest. They were not as crispy as I would have liked them.. but oh well! Cool idea nonetheless.
Im going to have to try this out! Hashbrowns are my favorite and breakfast is my favorite meal of the day!
Oooh this is such a good idea! They look tasty! I love hash browns, definitely is the cherry on the cake for breakfasts 😉 xxx
You’ve just made me hungry and it 2:00am from where I am! Hahaha.

I tried this and mine turned out terrible. But I used frozen hash browns so maybe that’s why.
I’ve known people to use tater tots in the waffle iron to make hash browns. I don’t have a waffle iron, so I haven’t personally tried this, but I was told that they were absolutely delicious.
What a great idea! I will try this out for sure! Thank you 🙂 Love these quirky food experiment posts!
Genius!!! Oh no, now I’m going to be making these every morning 🙂 I am totally pinning this to my “potato obsession” board!
You can also use tater tots!!! That’s what I used the first time I tried this. I loooove hashbrowns too!!

This is all kinds of ingenious I love it1

Ooh! This sounds good! Can’t wait to give it a try.
So trying these for breakfast this weekend. Thank you as always!! 🙂
I saw this on Pinterest recently, too! Needless to say, I was intrigued, so I’m glad someone took the time to work it out before I did. 🙂 Nothing better for your morning than some quick eggs and hash browns (and I completely douse both in hot sauce!).
That’s very clever. I’l have to try it.
What a great idea! Wish I had a waffle maker hah
These are like my mums good old had browns. I hardly make them because of prep time but these look awesome. Now…just need a waffle maker :/
Absolutely delicious!

What about using freshly grated potato? Do you need to cook down the potato first or can you just throw it onto the waffle iron?
I saw this on Pinterest a while back, but I’m not a hash brown fan at all. Glad they turned out good though because I know my mister would LOVE these!

So clever! Definitely trying this

Oh what a wonderful idea! I wonder it this will work for other grated veggies like squash and sweet potatoes as an alternative to roasting/grilling. I’ll have to give it a try!
Yum! First move, buy a waffle iron.

Yum! Waffle irons are so not a thing in the UK. Well not in my house. In fact the only waffles I’ve eaten have been cold from a bakery…

I’ve never seen hashbrowns like this before, they look so much better than the ones from mcdonalds 🙂 x

I love hashbrowns, but I’ve never made them. The only hashbrowns we can but in South Africa are the frozen ones that have onions added and a crumb coating. They’re pretty good and I think grating potatoes would just take too much time for breakfast for me.
Ah this looks delicious! And lovely photos.

This is genius! I’m always looking for other uses for my waffle iron so it’s not such a rarely used commodity. I also love hashbrowns, and the idea of not having to watch and dirty another pan to make them. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I love this idea!! I will sooo…try this for breakfast tomorrow morning!! or perhaps for supper!! 😉
such a great idea! i am definitely testing this out.
This looks gorgeous! Hash Browns are my favourite! I’m definitely going to try this!
http://www.crazylins.blogspot.co.uk
great idea! and so easy!
Do you know what’s weird? hash browns in the UK are totally different… smaller, more compact, triangular and a potato-y inside but not a potato-y outside… when I went to Vegas a month ago & had real hash browns (cause they’re American not English!) it was a bit of a surprise! I actually prefer the US version. 🙂
Great idea! I love hashbrowns 🙂

I can’t wait to try this. My husband loves hash browns, but I hate frying ANYthing. This looks like a great alternative.
LOVE waffle iron hash!! Just so genius!!
My husband will be so excited. This is one of his favorite sides. Now I guess I have a reason to replace our waffle-maker. Thanks for sharing!
fab idea. i HATE when the hash browns aren’t as cooked in the middle as they are on the outside. problem solved.

I saw that on pinterest last year, too! It’s now my favorite way to make hash browns. I even make them as a dinner side dish sometimes, mixing in garlic and onion (grated). It’s really yummy!
ah, yum! this kind of looks like rosti, that they have in Germany – basically a whole plate (like pizza) of fried grated potato, served with different toppings 🙂

OMG what a creative idea! I love hash browns. When I was little we went to visit relatives in Wisconsin during the summer. They made a country breakfast every morning, including hash browns. This is on my “to do” list this weekend. Thanks!
This is such a good idea! Will definitely be trying this soon!
Looks good! Might give this a go myself, I love hash browns! x

I just had to google what “hash browns” are… I’m from Germany, so I didn’t know! But now I have to say “Great Idea”…:)
By the way… hash browns are “Reibekuchen” or “Kartoffelpuffer” or “Kartoffelpfannkuchen” in german or even worse “Reibedatschi” in our accent… Sounds funny, doesn’t it? 😀
Made them, just grated some peeled potatoes and added oil, pepper and salt. Delicious! Thanks!!
Emma thank you for the hashbrown-waffle post. Tried it this morning, worked GREAT. Always look forward to the recipe posts. Need to try out one of your drink recipes soon.
I’m exactly the same way with hash browns! If they’re not on a breakfast menu, it’s a big fat fail. Also, if I order hash browns and they’re more like home fries…SO SAD. Not that I have anything against home fries. All fried potato products are pretty much the coolest. There’s just something about hash browns…
Yum! I absolutely love hashbrowns, but hate pan frying them. Thanks for the idea!
Yummy, love hash browns with ketchup. I don’t own a waffle iron but I wonder if this would work on a Forman grill, will have to try. Thanks!
