Learning to tell stories…

Stories 1Stories 1I recently took an online class called Storyology by Ali Edwards. Telling stories through photography has always been easy for me. This class inspired me to try focusing on the writing aspect. I want to capture stories with words, but it doesn't come naturally. After taking the course I started this book as a form of practice…

Stories 3Stories 3Stories 3I found this oversized photo (unused) vintage scrapbook at a flea market. In this book I plan to use one photo on each page and fill the rest with words. It will be a good exercise in writing down memories. πŸ™‚

What's one thing that you want to get better at in your creative life? xo. elsie

  • Cute scrapbook! And I love the picture!
I want to practice drawing because there are so many ideas in my head and I would love to scribble them down but in a way that also the scribbling looks good!
In addition to that I have to focus on finish creative project – I often start something, struggle with a problem during the process of making and don’t finish it.

  • I would love to get more diciplined at my creativity….meaning having time set aside for it consistently instead of the random-abandon-all-things-important-and-make-a-huge-mess-while-the-rest-of-my-life-falls-apart approach i currently take.

  • I definitely have to improve my skills in running a blog. I want to be a better and more organized blogger, to post more frequently and to make sure that my blog content is really valuable. That’s my goal for the next few weeks.

And I love your notebook! I’m sure that it will be just a great exercise πŸ™‚

  • I would love to learn to write a book. No matter what, fairytale or realistic story. That would be cool… Have to look for a class right now. πŸ˜‰

    bye

  • This is a great idea, Elsie. Writing has always come more naturally to me, so when I started blogging my goal was to improve my photography skills. While my photography skills have definitely improved, I have found myself slacking now when it comes to my writing! So I definitely need to learn how to combine the two aspects of blogging (writing & photography) without letting one fall by the wayside. Might have to try out this exercise πŸ™‚

  • How wonderful! I love that photo of all the colorful legs <3
I used to draw a lot and I was quite good, but it's been a year or more already since I did something good, it's hard for me nowadays to pick up a pencil and come up with something I'm pleased with. I'd really like to be able to do drawings I like again, but I don't know how!
And I'm also one of those people with a lot of hobbies so I wouldn't mind improving in photography, or playing guitar or bass!

  • What a lovely idea and the class looks fantastic! I might have give it a shot. Thanks for sharing!

  • Scarp booking and b=putting together memories on paper!i feel like i just save and save for my one “book” but never get to it!

  • Well, that could be helpful! I have problems with putting thoughts into words too. I mean I feel the same, for me photography is the way of expression I use most often. Maybe I should start similar scrapbook. Thanks for the idea!

  • I want to get better at recording the million ideas I get. I have started writing them down in random places but I really need to find a way to get them all in one place.

  • I love to craft and sew, and my friends tell me I’m good at. But I’ve always loved photography, I want to get better at it. I need to get a better camera though. Do you have and suggestions?
    πŸ™‚
    Love the photography book!

  • I’ve been trying to incorporate story in my artwork so this post connected with me! Words have such power and I’ve been adding them, inch by inch, to some of my latest works. Love the idea of one photo and the rest words in your scrapbook.

P.S. I incredibly admire Ali Edwards.

  • I’m actually quite the opposite! Writing stories has always come naturally to me, and I would love to get better at photography!

  • You can never learn too much…good motto! But its really good to see how other people learn/do things, this sounds really valuable xxx

  • That class sounds amazing! πŸ™‚
I’d love to get better at taking photos…

    xoxo

  • The opposite is true for me. I’ve been keeping a “notebook” for 10 years now, writing is my form of self expression, but I find a way to incorporate photos.

Do you print your photos? use photos from magazines?

  • I love the idea…back to basic. Most of us don’t really write much with pen and notebook anymore…this will be fun.

I love the vintage notebook you bought…very cute

  • i adore that vintage scrapbook! so cute. good for you!

i definitely, definitely want to become a better painter + sculptor! so not my fortΓ©s.

  • Fantastic. Photographs always help me to tell the stories I want to tell on my blog, as the writing came easy I’ve focused on the photography! However I am also a dancer/dance instructor so I am constantly searching for new inspiration for my classes and choreography! The best part of being an artist is you never are done, you’re never a “master” always a perpetual student with more chances to grow;)

  • That’s a great idea. AS a teacher of creative writing I often give students a picture that they are to use as inspiration for a story. That is also what the author of Girl With The Pearl Earring did.

  • I really want to get better at my scrapbooking and photography, I’m pretty good at coming up with stories but I need to start writing them down!! Great post, I love when y’all share stuff like this! πŸ™‚

  • Thanks for sharing, Elsie! I’m the opposite – writing comes more naturally to me so I am working on the image side of things. Which is why I always admire the photos you include in your posts. After all, a picture’s worth a thousand words πŸ™‚

  • I want to learn how to draw more realistically, especially when it comes to animals. I also have started dabbling with watercolors and really want to learn how to utilize those as well πŸ™‚ I love photography and writing too though and I am always striving to make those better as well! Creativity is the best.

  • thank you for sharing! i’ve always wanted to improve my writing / storytelling, so i’m definitely going to try this course out!

other than that, i want to improve my photography and drawing skills, maybe even give painting a shot πŸ™‚

  • What a great idea! In our rush-rush world, we bypass so many things in our life, so it’s a good thing when one sits for a while, writes instead of typing, thinking of what to write since there’s no delete button!

I bought of a beautiful fabric covered book before my daughter was born (she’s now 2 years old), to kind of do something like this, to write something to her along with a photo. But you know, I never got around to it at all. I’m inspired now, to go through some of her baby pics and write something down. Thank you!

  • I love this. My aim is to create a scrapbook of memoirs and photos I have of myself and my boyfriend together over the last 5 years. I’ve always thought that if I ever kept a diary I would want to be able to put pictures or cute finds in it.

  • Love a book of stories. I have a big, fabric-covered hardback called My Life Story.. The sister bought me it one day moons ago and its oh so lovely.. Barely 1/4 full.. I’ve got a whole load more tales to tell!! I love to tell blogtales.. but I can’t help loving handwritten ones..

  • I want to get better in writing, creating collages and knitting.

  • That is a really good idea! I actually have trouble remembering stories and things that happen, so maybe that would help in that area….

  • Oh wow, that’s a great idea! I have so many funny memories but writing them down with the photos they match is a perfect idea.

  • the photography aspect is what I want to get better at. I want the awesome pics to go along with my writing!

  • I love notebook..
I plan to shot many photo and make a diary..
    very inspiration post,love it..

    πŸ™‚

  • What a cute idea!

I don’t have a problem with words as much as I have a problem taking photos. I think it’s a matter of learning more about my camera, but I would really like to set aside some time to do that. I really think it will help me creatively.

  • What a lovely challenge for yourself! I’m kind of the inverse: I’ve always found writing to be easy, but the last few years, I’ve been focussing on becoming a better photographer. A few days ago, my sister-sin-law (what I call my live-in-boyfriend’s sister) wrote a comment on my blog that she thought I was good at telling stories with photos. Wow! Just what I’ve been working on! What a lovely compliment to receive.

P.S. Your blog inspires me every day!

  • Sewing… It’s funny but I can sew with a sewing machine but not by hand! I was never taught and that makes me sad. I want to learn and I want to teach my children (one day) how to sew also.

  • stories are my passion, I’m sure you’re gonna have a lot of fun practising writing. πŸ™‚
I’m always trying to better my writing and, at the moment, my knitting.

  • Haha this is essentially the one thing I want to improve in my creative life! I’ve always had a horrible memory so I’d like to document the good times more.
