Today we wanted to share a cute idea for organizing your kitchen spices. With every new recipe we end up collecting a new spice or two. Having all these options available is perfect for adventurous cooking but it can leave your kitchen cabinets looking cluttered! We decided to make our new spice storage magnetic so it could adhere to the side of a refrigerator, and we found these cute clear containers so you can easily see how much of each spice you have on hand.
Magnetic Spice Storage: Weekend Project
Step 1: Trace your container (we got ours here) onto a sheet of magnetic paper. Step 2-3. Cut out the shapes and adhere them to the back of your spice container. Step 4. Cut a piece of label paper in a strip longer than your container. I also added hand drawn lines to my strips, just for fun! Step 5. Use the container to measure how wide your strip should be. Make a crease with your finger to mark the spot and then cut it out. Step 6. Pour each spice in and label it with a large, easy to read hand written font!

Gah! I’ve been looking for a tutorial on these bad boys for months! Still not sure if it the right answer to my spice-hectic cabinets but I’m so glad I can store it away for when I decide.
Great post!

oh my goodness, this is so great.
Hi! That’s exactly what I’ve been posting about last Saturday^^ http://kleine-wunder-ueberall.de/?p=1845 But I used photos to protect the spices from light..
This is great!
They sell these at the dollar store complete with magnets and a spot for lables! I always love a little DIY, but…
I do like Ellen’s idea of using photos (or pretty paper?) to protect the spices and fancy things up a bit.

this is a really clever idea. i go a little crazy every time i open my spice cabinet and see the mismatched mess!
how adorable. i would have loved to do this in my old place – especially with my chalkboard wall / black fridge. my spices are a mess!
looks great!
Love it!
if u combine the ikea grundtal boxes with the magnetic board u can have the same without putting them on the fridge… and without too much trouble 😉
love the idea, though…
This is perfect! I might get the larger containers and make a custom shelf in the pantry. Thanks for the tutorial.
This is such a clever idea! I will have to try it one of these weekends. Thanks for posting!
Cool idea. I don’t have a space beside my fridge so it wouldn’t work for spices, but I’m thinking that it would be great in my office/craft area if I hang a magnet board and use the containers to store notions and little bits and pieces!

this blew my mind.
What a lovely idea. We have spices in four different places in the kitchen and it’s so time-consuming finding what you want. Thanks for the idea.
What a great idea!
I am totally making this tomorrow!

Did you paint a metal sheet (wall?) with chalkboard paint or did you find magnetized paint? I can’t wait to do this! Thank you for the inspiration.
This is so cute!!!!! 🙂 Great post! Check out my blog 🙂
This is brilliant!
So cute! I hate how the spice I need is always in the back of the pantry!
Fondly,
Jess
What a great idea!!!

This is really fun. My spices are are thrown in a cabinet so this would be a fun project for me.

These are at ikea..they look exactly like the ones at ikea actually
I have the magnetic spice containers from World Market (I did a big project set on my flickr here). The issue I have is that I live in St. Louis (so I’m sure we have similar climates) and the humidity has simply destroyed the containers, causing the lids to rust and get stuck on and some of the spices to get yucky. I would love to hear in the future (especially after the summer!) if this happens to your containers. Because I need to do something different!!
Such s fantastic idea! We’ve been collecting lots of little pretty jars and that’s where our spices live.

I love this idea! I saw something similar on apartment therapy awhile back, but you make it way more cute!
Great idea. I have about 50 spices so it would be lovely (if you had the room) to make a feature wall with this idea. R x

I like the idea but I can’t let go of the convenience of having holes for shaking! I’ve thought about buying loose powder makeup containers for my spices and putting magnets on those!
Great idea!!! I like the idea that everything is visible. You know which ones you are running out of. 🙂

I love this idea I have soooooooo many spices though but I may just do this with some. By the way I love your handwriting <3
SO SMART!
We just bought some like that from Ikea. I love them. I store whole nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and bay leaves in mine because I love the look of big, chunky ingredients.
I absolutely adore this! Such a must-do for anyone who cooks!

I’ve seen a lot of these on etsy, but never as a DIY! Really cool! Thanks for sharing 🙂

We did this in our kitchen, too. I saw the exact same DIY in the Washington Post several years ago.

Alton Brown uses this idea, but he uses self adhesive velcro strips and puts them on the inside of his cabinet doors to protect them from light !
I love this idea and have been needing to do something with my spices!

I love this project! I did the same thing a few years ago for my spices. I bought the watchmaker’s cases from Lee Valley, but I used pre-printed spice labels. I mounted a metal Ikea noticeboard thing on the wall, and stuck them all to that. They’re right over our island, just in reach while we cook!
You can see them in this recent blog post:

What a great idea! They look so much better than in normal containers! 🙂
Thanks ladies!
Much love, Vivi
Such a great idea! You guys never cease to amaze & delight me! XOXO, http://www.NatalyasCloset.com
This is so genious, I’m emailing it to my mother as we speek.
LOVE this idea– moving into a new apartment soon and may just have to implement this (or something similar) for some extra storage!
Thanks for always having such cute, interesting DIY projects on your blog
So do you have a magnetic board you’re putting these on? Or how do they stay on the cabinet door? Thanks!
This is great!

These are SO adorable, oh my GOODNESS.

I have these on my fridge but I put the labels on the back. Guests think its amazing that I can identify dried herbs but it’s actually my secret labels!
Brilliant idea! 🙂
TOTALLY need to do this! My spice cabinet is a mess. And because I’m so short I can’t see anything! Put cinnamon instead of cumin in a dish once 🙂
An other great idea for spice storage ! Really easy !

What a great idea and it doesn’t seem too difficult!
I would like to this idea but i would have to tweak it because i would be scared to knock them off!!
Cool!! great idea! 😉
I like this idea!!!!
Great idea – shame my kitchen is so small I haven’t even got any space to put these!
Emma xx
This is the cutest idea ever!!!
I love this idea! My fridge is not magnetic though. Perhaps I could get a magnetic board.
It’s a really great idea! Interesting and useful 🙂
And you look so pretty with a ponytail!
OH good HEAVEN I am in LOVE!!!
Definitely making these:)
That is so so so cute <3
i love your diy posts! Ur blog makes me smile <3

I have GOT to give this one a shot. What a clean and simple way to keep that cupboard from stacking up! Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been wanting to do something like this for forever – thanks for the inspiration!
happy weekend!

This is genius! I am going to hang something magnetic in my kitchen this weekend and make these.
I love this idea. Thanks for sharing
These are super cute in theory, but I have some on my fridge and I hate them because once the spices get stuck between the canister and the lid they become IMPOSSIBLE to turn/open. Very tantrum inducing! Yours look more user friendly though…hopefully you won’t have this problem!
Nice idea, like it
OMG F*cking Gawd….i just peed my pants in excitement over this! I saw a DIY on Spices and they were too big for my drawer….Now this, this will work for us! I’m definitely going to try this now! I have soooo many spices it’s crazy. I don’t use salt as much so i literally have everything in stock.
I love it! Totally a great idea. Did you paint your fridge with chalkboard paint? Can you tell us about the process? I am soooooo very interested…
What size containers did you get? Also, did you get the ones that have screw on tops? Great idea!
This is so awesome, what a great idea!
o this is genius !! i can’t stand clutter in cabinets & being able to see everything in clear view, makes cooking so much more exciting. i will surely do this once i have a place of my own !… which is soon.
xoxo

Where did you find the magnet paper? How thick of magnets are they? I’m trying to buy stuff online, but I’ve never seen magnet sheets like that before, and there seem to be a lot of options, I want to make sure I get enough magnet to actually hold them!
This is so cool! and cute!
I think I’ll try it!
http://myfactoryofideas.blogspot.com/
would love to know which dollar stores sell these…been looking for them everywhere and they are tending to be spendy…a little help??
I’ve done this and it’s so amazing! It makes things so much easier to get to and it’s adorable!

Thats great! Come check out my blog 🙂
This is such a clever idea! I will have to try it one of these weekends. Thanks for posting!
CLEVEEER!!!!!
this is sooo cute 😀
nice to try~
thanks
We must be on the same wave length. Two weeks ago I redid my spices into metal containers. However instead of the side of the fridge I mounted a magnetic dry erase board to the inside of my pantry door. Not only are my spices organized it also give me a place to write notes.
We have something similar and LOVE it. Our jars were in a set of 12 with a standup or hangup magnetic board, which we don’t use. I have a really short little drawer and just lay them our alphabetically. I put a second label on the tin, right under the lid. Not a bad idea if you don’t trust a fellow cook to get the right lid on the right tin. Ours have a hole in the rim of the tin and a hole for shaking and a hole for pouring in the lid. I adjusted the labels so if they are both straight, the holes in the lid sit on either side of the hole in the rim of the tin – therefore no spills in the drawer. A label maker helped greatly with the labels (you have gorgeous writing). The magnetic bottoms lets you stack these – a lifesaver if you’re st. Sorry this is long – I just learned a lot when doing this.hort on space. Just don’t store them near the stove or oven where heat can dry spices out.
I just drooled over my keyboard with this idea! I don’t cook much, although I should… Maybe with my spices organized I’ll be encouraged to do it more often!
Adorabubble
Lovely lovely lovely
wow! great idea!!! so smart and simple!
Brilliant idea. I’m definitely gonna try this myself. Thanks, Elizabeth
The oil in the cloves will soften the plastic and some of the other spices may react poorly to the containers too. I can’t remember which ones I had to toss after about 6 months.
I ordered the exact same containers from where you recommended on Sunday. I just got an email a few hours ago letting me know they shipped! I am moving to the state next door (Alabama) next weekend and am really looking forward to a fun project once I get settled in to make me happy and my new house more homey. Thank you so much! I am a new reader and absolutely love your home!!
Just wondering, do you have to put a magnetic paint under the chalkboard paint when doing a fridge?
Where did you get the sheets of magnetic paper? Do the magnetic sheet backs stick well on the metal tins? Did you do any prep on the metal tins to make it stick better? I’m going to try this! Can’t wait to gather everything to start. Thanks for the great instructions.
wow! love it, very cute ♥♥♥

This is a really nice idea. I’ve just moved into a flat which is a lot smaller than my last place so I am in desperate need of self storage solutions, especially for my tiny kitchen! I love this spice rack, I love cooking so I will definitely give it a go!

Hi! I love what you’ve done with these spices! I am doing something similar but can’t decide b/w clear top lids or screw top. In your opinion, are these lids tight enough to keep your spices fresh? Or, after having used them a while, would you prefer a tighter grip?
Another blogger suggested putting masking tape around the rim to tighten the seal. http://kitchentablescraps.com/storage-and-organization/magnetic-spice-rack/
My husband loves to go out to sea on your little boat. I love to cook, as does he, but taking food and spices with us isn’t easy when every once of storage has to be put to good use. I wonder if something like this would work out at sea?
What a great idea!!
What a lovely idea.!
I absolutely ADORE your blog!
I’m about to move into my own first home, and I already have so many decorating ideas from your blog alone!
The step-by-step pictures are a HUGE PLUS, thanks for making DIYs simple and fun~
Are the lids on these containers secure? You aren’t worried about them accidentally opening. Hobby Lobby had some but the clear part of the lids were plastic. Not sure I really trust those.
I bought magnet paper from Hobby Lobby but it didn’t come with an adhesive and it wasn’t strong enough. What was the magnet product you used?
this is so cute, and quite brilliant!
http://turquoisewildflower.blogspot.com
What is that black “paper” that you put on the back of the containers? And wha did u stick them on
Bought everything, glued on the magnet paper, I was so happy until I put in the garlic salt and low and behold it slid down the stainless steel, to heavy for the paper. I went looking for magnets and found the cost was crazy, but not for the ceramic ones. Now my garlic salt stopped slidding. Thanks for the link for the containers.
what a lovely idea
i like it so much
