Make Room For Magic + Giveaway (Closed)

Make Room For Magic DIY wall artHey friends! I'm here to share a fresh idea for DIY wall art today. In January I always get the itch to refresh our living spaces one room at a time. Just ask Jeremy! All I want to do is move things and repaint. I think it's an instinctive way to distract myself from the cold weather months. I need PROJECTS!

This is the final DIY in a series of four posts, where we partnered with Pentel (All You need Is Love, Fabric Fun, Frosted Mason Jar Motives). It's been super fun to play around with their products.

Here's how I made this wall art using their oil pastels:1Step 1: Use oil pastels to draw fun patterns on watercolor paper. Use matching shades (I used blues and teals) as well as white (it's gonna look awesome in step 2, I promise!). Each pattern should be a little bigger than 3×4 inches wide.2Step 2: Use watercolor paint (or watered down acrylic paint) to lightly glaze over the oil pastel patterns. The pastels will act as a wax resist revealing pretty patterns.

Note: You can make this art as big as you want. But whatever size you choose (mine is 11×14), do twice that size in patterns so you have a lot of options for your collage.3Step 3: Allow your watercolor paint to dry completely.

4Step 4: Cut 1.5×2-inch pieces from the patterns.

5Step 5: Adhere the pieces to one big piece of paper (mine is 11×14, and I went a little over the edge, so it would fit well behind the matte) using glue dots.6Step 6: You can go ahead and frame it as is, or add a quote! If you want a quote, use letter stickers to create a fun phrase. I like to cut out the letters, so I can practice my spacing before I begin adhering them to the art.7Step 7: Matte your new artwork. Oooh, it's looking so good!

8Step 8: Frame that art. Now don't forget to stand back and enjoy it!

Make Room For Magic DIY wall art That was easy, huh?

  • These Pentel works have been bringing back bittersweet memories for me and I’ve been loving it and just wanted to tell you why and give my thanks for you guys on doing this project.

I was taught how to color and draw with the Pentel Pastels. My mother and Uncle (who died when I was 7) would pull them out to work on their respective projects, Mom – her school posters and pictures, Uncle – His graphic Designing and personal art projects. Mom would be colorful and lively recreating images from Dr. Seuss, Tommy De Paola and Eric Campbell just to name a few to post on her classroom walls. My uncle would use the gradiated black set to make his images. Mom taught me to love color and my Uncle taught me to love gradients and Black and White.

When you first started showing the pentel projects, my mind would race back to all the projects we used to do together. Even though it’s been close to 22 years since my uncle’s passing, I still have fond memories. I even have a Cindy Lou Who my mother made for her last year at school before retirement and it’s probably one of my favorite pieces in my art collection (amongst some Card Board Alligators).

If I were to choose, I’d pick the simple Oil Pastels Class Pack to have the best of both worlds http://www.pentel.com/store/oil-pastel-class-pack that way with my own pastels collection, I can make my own unique work.

But I also have a weak spot for gel pens that make their way into scrapbooking a lot.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I would love to use the Oil Pastel Set of 50! There are so many beautiful colors. My favorite way to use oil pastels is to use variations in colors and blend them to make little gradients.

  • i lost my watercolors recently and have felt the lack of them. i would definitely use those for my art journaling!

  • That’s a very difficult choice! The realistic girl in me chooses the Fabric fun pastel dye sticks (http://www.pentel.com/store/fabric-fun): the projects you wrote about seem quite doable even to me, and the results are so pretty!
But the dreamer in me is thinking about water colors. The thing is I’ve NEVER tried water colors!
So… even though I have no idea about how to use them and I’d probably make an ugly mess, I think I’d choose water colors.

  • I would love the water colors or oil pastels to use in my art journal!

  • My favorite are the White markers for writing on colored or metallic paper. I think you could make really cool and almost sophisticated art with just white markers and a silver background. Love to have some of those! 🙂

  • Well, where to begin?? All the products look like so much fun to play with!! I’d begin with the white markers because I love to work on colored and dark papers. • YIPEEEE! I love Pentel, and I am stoked about the new featured artist section! super legit… My PENTEL pick is the fabric pens http://www.pentel.com/store/fabric-fun-1308
    MY CREATION IDEAS:
    1. Baby Beacoup Onesie- Grab a pack from the Maxx or target (in white or black) and do some cool art deco, or simple + signs, triangles, or circles to cool’erize & hide the future stains 😉
    2. “From the Windows to the Walls”- Any super light or dark fabric (I can be seen scavenging the bargain bins, ain’t no shame in my game), cut in LONG strands and hang them vertically or horizontally depending on your vision, then draw cool designs maybe the “all seeing eye” for example. Another idea would be to make bows out of the scraps, same concept use it as a garland for holidays.
    3. Cross Hatch-Over lap non-textured upholstery fabric you’ve already made a stellar design on, and make a woven seat cushion and or for a fold up chair that needs some sprucing.
    4. “In My WhiteT”- In my low moments and cheap ways of creating, take an old white T (or snake one from your husband) use that as your canvas then lacquer some old thicker branches (nab those from the yard OR the neighbors your choice) and stretch it like a scroll (its a win win because your man isn’t mad that you took his T, AND there’s some man flare in the apt/house).

Thank you for your blog, it’s been inspiring! Also, thank you for taking the time to read 🙂

    always,
    Katie

  • I am obsessed with their mechanical pencils and pens since I was in middle school. My favorite is the flex fit.

  • I would love to try the Liquid Zen Water Colors! I’ve resolved to take more time to create, and that would make exploring water colors so much easier and more accessible 🙂

  • It’d b fun to use the Fabric Fun Dye Sticks!. They would work with your paint by numbers pillow. Or you could make a wall art collage of squares of fabric. An idea would be to have simple strips of fabric and make squares like this or braid and twist strips of fabric and frame it. I once saw a photo of someone’s living room and above their couch was this sort of frames quilt-like fabric piece. I think it’d be cool to make your own fabric quilt pieces and place them together. Or even do that design (not sure the name) on place mats, with the fabric weaving under and over.

Another idea could use the dye sticks or pastels and utilizing the negative space of images, like cutting out negative space and creating designs in them. Cutting around photographs and designing your own backgrounds. Those are just some of my ideas. I was never much into fabric art before but those dye sticks are getting the creativity sparking again and I like it.

  • Cool giveaway! I would use the Hybrid Technica Pigment Ink Pens to do some really lovely, meditative ink line-drawing, as I often do when I need to be calm for a while. Repeated patterns, shapes, and designs to fill a page, and if I like it particularly well at the end, I’ll frame it or put it up somewhere where I can see it throughout the day. 🙂
