Any other "light sleepers" out there?? If so, don't cheer too loudly, one of our fellow LS may be trying to take a nap. I didn't realize that I was a light sleeper, until I got to college and found out how difficult it can be to sleep in a dorm with lots of other people nearby. It wasn't until I started using a noise machine, earplugs, and an eye mask that I was able to finally get some rest. I still use a mixture of those items at night, but I've always wanted a Breakfast At Tiffany's eye mask with the giant lashes, so now seemed as good a time as any to make that dream come true! Here's how to make your own:
Supplies: Download the pattern (right click/ctrl + click on Mac and select "Save file/link as"), two patterns of cotton fabric, quilt batting (to add some thickness to the mask), elastic, fabric glue, felt, seude fringe, fabric scissors. 1. Place your cotton fabrics right sides together and lay the two layers on top of your quilt batting. Print and cut out the eye mask pattern and pin the pattern onto your material. Cut out your eye mask shape. 2. Measure your head to see how long you need your elastic band to be and cut your elastic with an extra inch on each side. Between your two cotton fabrics, pin the elastic band ends at the locations noted on the pattern. The ends should be sticking out the sides and the middle of the elastic sandwiched between the two cotton layers (don't worry, it will be on the right side when you flip it around!). 3. Leaving a 1/2 seam allowance, use a sewing machine to sew around the edge of your eyemask. Make sure to leave at least a 1 inch wide opening in order to turn your item. Once complete, use your opening to turn your eye mask right side out and use a hidden stitch to close up your opening. 4. Now you're ready to decorate! Use some felt half circles to create your eyelids and cut a length of fringe to create your lashes. Attach your features with some fabric glue and pin in place until the glue has dried. These turned out so cute (and were easy to make!) so they would be a great personalized gift for someone special. As you can see, I made a second eye mask for my hubby Todd with some iron-on letters. He's a musician so he travels a lot for work and always keeps a few things to help him sleep in his backpack. I'm hoping that my eye mask will make him feel more at home when he's away and help him to have the sweetest dreams—of me, of course! xo. Laura

These are cute! But, I have an added issues. I can’t have anything pressed against my eyes. So, I have have something that is hollow on the inside where the eyes would touch. This makes it really difficult to have cute eye masks. Any idea how I can make my own?
I’ve been wanting to make a sleeping mask with eyelashes on them. Looks good!
TOO cute! Ahhh! I’m never too bothered by light when I’m sleeping, but I may have to make one of these simply for the adorableness factor!

My favorite eye mask of all time was Audrey Hepburn’s in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” In college, I had a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” party for some girlfriends and we made them but I lost mine…Oops. Maybe I should make another?
I love how in depth this tutorial is! I’ve also always wanted those Audrey Hepburn eyes on an eye mask, but this version is cuter and easily customizable! Great post, Laura! 🙂
what a cute little day!

I love this! So adorable and would definitely make a cute gift!
I never knew how sensitive I was until I lived in a sorority house. I had survived freshman year with just one roommate and sophomore year solo. However junior year was a wake-up call (literally). Living with so many other girls, on such different schedules was not fun. I found myself waking up constantly before I needed to, so I too had to invest in some earplugs. These eye-masks are seriously darling!
this is too cute!

This is a cute idea! You could also use it as an eye mask for stress relief by filling in the center with uncooked rice with some essential oils like lavender or peppermint.
I should do this for my baby, she is two months now and she needs a little piece of fabric covering her eyes to fall asleep… i can imagine she with that, ha ha
The cutest! Now I have to learn how to not tear the eye mask off in the middle of the night and jam is furiously under my pillow…which is apparently how I handle these things 🙂

Oh, girl, Light Sleeper OG over here. I really don’t know how a human being can even BE so bad at sleeping. Love me a good face mask, but so far have been loath to shell out $30 for a cute one. This might just be the best option! Plus, my husband is always stealing mine, so His n’ Hers is such a great idea! Thanks for the tutorial. <3
YES!!! I am so going to make this:) My husband sleeps with light and I have to wear a eye mask, no I can make it my own:)

Oh my gosh! I forgot all about that eye mask in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and this post brought back nostalgic memories. Thanks so much for the tutorial! I may have to make a few as gifts soon… probably with the movie playing in the background.

This is super cute! I love the eye mask she has in Breakfast at Tiffanys! The big lashes make sleeping so glamorous!
Thank you so much for this pattern! I realize I’m about three years too late, but it’s much needed right now! I work NOC shift at a nursing home and by the time I get home and get to sleep, it’s light outside and makes it hard to sleep. Working on my very own mask right now! Thanks a million!
This is just what I’ve been looking for!!!! It’s great to be what you need instead of buying it. Then it it even custom made!!!!! Thanks for this how – to
– make!!!
I maked it 🙂
Useful…
