I've had several different phases where I got really obsessed with clay and lately I can feel it coming on again! I love polymer clay and also air dry clays that can be found at the craft store. Emma just picked up a bunch of metal clay and I'm really excited to see what she does with it! Anyway- we like clay.
These tiny planters are easy to make and can be customized in countless patterns and designs! You know what that means? It means they would make awesome gifts! Here's how:We loved this house planter via Say Yes to Hoboken, and we followed their tip for making the vessel watertight.
1. Supplies Needed: Oven-bake clay, X-Acto knife, clay knives, piece of wax paper, cutting board, and a rolling pin.
2. Roll your clay out about 1/4 of an inch thick and cut a long rectangle that is 10 inches long and 2 1/2 inches tall. Cut out a circle for the bottom of the planter that is 3 1/2 inches wide.
3. Place your long rectangle piece on top of your circle to create your sides. Roll thin "snakes" of clay to put on the inside bottom of the planter (where the walls meet the planter bottom). Use the clay knives to smooth out the clay snake between the crack to create a water-tight seal. Roll out more clay and cut out the design that will go on the sides of your planter.
4. Use a wooden skewer to poke 4 evenly spaced holes near the top of your planter. Bake your clay according to the package directions and let the planter cool. Tie two pieces of twine through the holes of the planter (tying each strand across from each other) and make a knot near the top of the strands so that you have a loop to hang the planter from. We tried three different designs on the outside of the planters: large cut out hearts, skinny rectangles and cookie cutter letters. We added paint to a few of the designs and left one its natural clay color. These were so much fun to make. I love their mini size too. They make a great accent piece for small spaces. πHave fun making something cute and tiny! xoxo. Elsie

Those are so adorable! I am going to try this project sometime very soon. I feel like it’s just the perfect little touch to any room. Are there any problems you ran into while making these mini planters? I’m worried that if I made them they’d be too heavy.
Oh my gosh, I think I might just have to try this. Those are so cute and pretty! I cant wait to come up with different designs.

So cute! Can anyone recommend what kinds of plants to put in this planter since it doesn’t have drainage? I don’t have much of a green thumb! Thanks π
I LOVE these, and the plants look so cute in them! xx

Serena,
Hi! To help with drainage- you can either add some pebbles to the bottom of the container before planting or find tiny succulents small enough to stay in their plastic containers and stick them in the homemade container that way. Both of these solutions have worked for me with other indoor houseplants! XO.
Oh these are so so cute! I love them. Especially the grey one!

They’re so lovely. I want them.
Yes so cute, I can imagine them at my front door with something yummy smelling to welcome guests or maybe filled with herbs in my kitchen.
so you plant directly in it, with no lining or pot, right ? They look gorgeous !
You guys come up with the coolest crafts – I love it!

These are so cute; lovely idea to brighten up a space!
These are so cute! I think I’ll give this one a try once in the new place and my partner lifts the “no new plants” ban!
Cute pots!
This is really neat but it would be even better if you could do a flat back instead so it sits against the wall.
Oh my, so awesome! The one with the hearts is just too dang adorable!
