I’ve always thought mint juleps were a bit odd. I mean, I’m not sure who originally thought that mint and bourbon would go well together, but they were right! Apart they just seem like a slightly odd combination to me. Mint is, well, minty and herby. While bourbon can be spicy (nutmeg, cinnamon –not necessarily heat), sweet like caramel, or even a little smoky depending on the bourbon. So it’s just a combo that I probably wouldn’t have thought of.
But when paired together in a mint julep, the flavors just work and turn into a super refreshing drink. I actually had a rum julep last weekend at The Golden Girl Rum Club (Don’t worry – I’ll share a tour of our new space with you soon!), and it reminded me how much I love this drink.
So that was the inspiration behind this boozy milkshake version. This is like a mint julep meets after dinner mint plus ice cream. Mmmm!
Mint Julep Milkshakes, makes one
2-3 scoops of mint (or mint chocolate) ice cream
1/3 cup ice
3/4 to 1 oz. bourbon
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
mint leaves and powdered sugar for garnish
In a blender combine the mint ice cream, ice, and bourbon. Blend into a slushy consistency. Pour into a tall glass and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Garnish with a big sprig of mint, sprinkled in powdered sugar.
You can easily double or triple this recipe if you want to make more than one serving at a time for a group. You can just blend it all together and then separate out into glasses.
This is fairly light on the alcohol content. You see that I mention using 3/4 to 1 oz of bourbon per serving. I used the smaller cup on a jigger to measure the bourbon, which is 3/4 oz. But I let it overflow a little on each pour (here I made three servings at once), so it may have been more like 1 oz. In some recipes you want to be really precise with measurements, but for this it is not necessary. You could even use a little more bourbon, like 1 1/2 oz, if you preferred. Make one, taste it, and see what you think.
I also really liked the combination of a slushy milkshake bottom (with ice incorporated into the ice cream) and then a scoop of vanilla on top. It’s pretty, and it almost turns this into a kind of milkshake float. Whoa.
If you like mint juleps, you should totally try this dessert version this weekend! xo. Emma
