Hi friends! I thought it would be fun to share a small series of projects I am making for my new home. I will call the series "Nesting". Each project will be something that I was already going to make for our home. Some may be a little technical, most will be super easy (like this one). All of them will be items that I plan to keep and use for a long time that match the style of our new space.
I've been loving black and white accents for home decor. Obsessed is probably the right word, actually. This week I took some time to hand print a couple simple patterns. They were so easy to mask, stamp, paint and stitch up! All three of these patterns were made with a base of white canvas and black fabric paint (I like Tulip Soft Fabric Paint—it's less stiff and perfect for textiles). I made the polka dot print with a round foam stamp (similar technique). The other two prints were made with masking tape made into shapes and painted over with a foam brush (similar technique). I had so much fun making these and can't wait make more. I bought some foam letter stamps, so I see some song lyric pillows in our near future. Have you ever painted or printed your own pillows? I love how it's so quick and easy (and inexpensive) to personalize a living room! xoxo. Elsie
PS. Emma's boyfriend adopted this puppy this week… isn't he adorable? He's a lab + shar pei mix.

i havent tried any pillows but i did a series of tshirts for my exboyfriend, i made a cut-out image of a hard piece of paper (cardbox mostly since others absorb too much paint) but also used acetates, cut them and then paint over them similar to a silkscreen 🙂 i love it.
I love the black based square one. Looks pretty easy… Hm… New project? I think yes. xo. Deanna

Very cool shapes! I really like how easy this is and I can’t wait to see your other projects.

Love your new pillows

Like your pillows, especially the rectangular one! Painting and printing textiles is so much fun, isn’t it! I did these pillows by using a silk screen and a stencil, also really easy: http://www.neovias.blogspot.fi/2011/10/he-and-she.html.
Now I’ve been working with hand painted table runners – using tape and black textile paint, just like you did with these pillows. Will post them soon.
this is a fantastic idea totally making it for my new home!

sweet pup!
love the pillows and the patterns you chose!! thanks for sharing the idea.
This is such a cute simple idea, i’m loving black and white geometrics at the mo, in fact a bargain black and white ikea rug recently appeared in my lounge!
such a great idea, especially if you’ve got several different colours in the room, printing your own fabric simply like this would be amazing for cushions or curtains even

I LOVE the pillows and the puppy!

I recently printed a pillow using a regular old fork! I just dipped the tines in the paint and pressed it on the fabric going every which way (kinda like making peanut butter cookies, except I didn’t criss cross). It turned out so well that even my non-crafty husband was impressed!
Loving these pillows, the patterns are really cool too.

Hi there,
my couch is a Nixon set from Thrive Furniture. 😀
XO
I really like those!
Again with the fabric paint 🙂
You make it so easy and accessible to make design fun and some quick to make. And that dog is adorable!

Those pillows are gorgeous! Another way to make easy stamps is to cut into rubber wine corks with an exacto knife. The rubber is pretty sturdy and besides getting a little stained from the paint, they are easy to wash off and reuse. You can even cut into the long side and make oblong shapes if you are really determined.
How adorable! I’m definitely going to try this over the weekend. I plan on moving on sometime soon and these would be absolutely perfect for a student on a tight budget! Thanks so much <3
Oh my Gosh, this series will be a god send! My hubby and I move into our first home in 2 weeks and I needed some well organized home DIYs, great timing and great style! Thanks for sharing!
PS- I think the pup really brings out the patterns 😉
This is a great idea! I was just thinking of buying new throw pillows, but this is a much cheaper and easier idea. And, I can make it whatvever color I want!
Love the polka dot pillow! So cute! The puppy is adorable too!

So cute! Really livens up the sofa and look easy to make!Well done!
I love these pillows! I made a similar pillow for my living room, and I love it. I made my own stamp in the shape of a bird silhouette, and I used it to print the fabric. I also made huge pom-poms to go around the edge. It’s definitely one of the best things I’ve ever made for my home. I’ve been meaning to make more. They’re so fun and easy. I think I may have to make a polka dot one just like yours.
What a good idea! I love the black and white and simple patterns.
It must be a dog party at your home most days! How awesome. 🙂
CUTE PUPPY!!!!!!!
hi Elsie and Emma!
I only foudn your blog recently and i love how colourful and lively your blog is.
I hope you don’t mind, i’d like to ask how you put text in your photos/? its so neat!
Thanks and have a great day1
Oh that puppy melts me.
great inspiration!

These are so cute. Such a simple idea too. I once tried DIY pillows. I cut up my favourite Nirvana t-shirt, but my lack of artistic flare/cutting ability left me with a wonky cushion that was so small it was more like a hamster pillow. Needless to say, it went in the bin. To this day I am one t-shirt, one pillow down! Maybe it’s time to follow your lead and make amends?

The pillows are awesome, too… but I really LOVE your sofa. Love it. Really. The puppy is cool too 😀
Hi! I wasn’t sure who to write to and I thought you might have an answer to mu doubts… I have a small blog where I post mostly about inspiration, writing and my daily life. I just got an email from Storylane’s CEO asking me to join his social platform…
I had never heard of storylane before and I am not sure if it would be a good move. Although I am amateur, I don’t want to take a step backwards, so I would love to have your opinion and whatever information you have on this platform!
Thank you!
Love this, such a simple but effective way to put a bit of your own touch on your decorating! I did something similar with a rug, it was my first ever blog post! http://flat3-6.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/geometric-painted-rug.html
Eeeee puppy!! He is adorable 🙂

I also have a shar pei/lab mix pooch that I adopted from a shelter a few years ago.

Love the pillows 🙂 and the puppy! My oldest fur baby is Bailey a German shepard/shar pei mix. He is one of the best dogs I have had the pleasure of adding to my family. Hope they love & enjoy their puppy as much as I have enjoyed mine.

That puppy has been all over my instagram feed – and I’m not going to lie it made my week to see him on a Beautiful Mess too!
This is beautiful. I never thought of using black and white against a brightly coloured couch. I’ve filed it in Pinterest. I don’t have a sofa yet and it’s not easy deciding. I wanted something neutral and was thinking then to decorate with colourful cushions etc…but this is a different idea! Thanks for sharing! I pinned the picture with the adorable puppy 😀
I’ve always loved pillows. Only problem with that is we have so many we can’t sit on the couch or lay on our bed without having to push them onto the floor! HAHA. LOVE that they add visual interest – these ones in your pics are so lovely!
XOXO

Dunno why I ever thought that making pillows for my living room would be too hard. Funny the things that get me all stuck. Anyways, I am wondering what exactly are the fabric measurements for these pillows? I like the size and shapes of them. (sewing in 3D is a little intimidating. What if I make them too small?!)
Best,
Ash
Those are so cute! I love the pattern of them!

Love these. Really want to make my own now. And that is the most adorable puppy. You did well to get such a good photo of him.. with his head just slightly tilted to the side.
I’ve been looking for throw pillows with that pattern for months! And I love that sofa, any chance you’ll reveal where you found it?
This has really inspired me to try out printing!! I’m addicted to making stuff 😉
