You may call it “Puppy Chow” or “Muddy Buddies” or some other regional name, but no matter what you call it, it’s just flat out delicious. I kind of forgot about puppy chow in my adult years until I picked it one day recently for my movie snack, and all I could think was, “WHY DID I EVER STOP EATING THIS??” It’s so good. And right after that revelation I had another thought, “Oooh, I bet this would be good with Nutella!” Apparently I was totally right, so I thought I would share my newfound snack joy with the rest of you. You’re welcome!
Nutella Puppy Chow, makes about 5 cups.
Adapted from Chex Muddy Buddies
4 1/2 cups rice chex cereal
1/4 cup peanut butter
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup Nutella
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup powdered sugar
Add the peanut butter, butter and Nutella into a microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 30 seconds and stir to combine. Put the mixture in for another 15-30 seconds if it’s not fully melted together yet, but be careful not to overheat and burn it. When it’s melted, add the vanilla in and stir.
Pour the mixture over the chex cereal and stir until all the pieces are evenly coated.
Put the powered sugar into a large ziplock bag, add the chocolate covered chex, seal the bag and shake until all the pieces are coated in powdered sugar.
Lay the pieces out to cool, and either serve or store in an airtight container.
I think I was having an out of body experience as I was making this. I kept seeing a hand reach for the pieces, pop them into my mouth, and I was completely unaware that it was me doing it until I noticed the bowl getting lower and lower. Whoops! It’s a reflex I guess.
If you love the original snack, I think you’re going to be pretty happy about this little twist as well. I mean chocolate, peanut butter and Nutella all in a bite size snack? What’s not to love?! xo. Laura

Yummy! I can’t say “No” to Nutella! I love Muddy Buddies too! They make the perfect snack.
Yum! This looks dangerously delicious. I feel like anything with Nutella/peanut butter is a great combination, I can’t wait to give it a try.
Well if you have any cereal similar to chex, I would definitely recommend you try this stuff. It’s so yummy! If you take it to a party all of your friends will think you’re amazing!!
I love, love, love ABM and everything about your blog and the staff. I hate to be one of these people, but nutella is so so soooo bad for the environment. It uses palm oil which is a huge factor in deforestation and thousands of animals losing their lives. You can make homemade versions of Nutella, yes it is more work, but so much better not just for you, but more specifically for the world. Just google or pinterest search “homemade nutella” and you’ll find plenty of recipes. This is written with nothing but love, and I hope I don’t get shamed for posting this. I just want more people to be aware of the side effects of consuming palm oil. So many products contain it, but the more we stop eating and using them, the better off animals of all shapes and sizes, forests, etc. will be.

Please stop doing this to me! Oh my goodness, this must be made soon. My problem with puppy chow is that I always try to convince myself that it’s a perfectly healthy breakfast because it includes Chex and peanut butter.

Oh Laura please please don’t do this to me!!!!! LOL just kidding give it to me now!
My thoughts whilst reading:
-They’re making puppy food? I didn’t know you need special food for puppies!
-Good thing I only have a cat, dogs sound high maintenance.
-What a waste, nutella for dogs. Isn’t chocolate bad for dogs anyway?
-Hmmmm, on second thoughts, this sounds like human food!
-And delicious human food.
Sincerely,
New Zealand reader.
Oh god. That’s just bad news in my house. Especially with the summer coming… Why oh why couldn’t you have come up with this in the depressing winter months? Well, I guess I just have to now… *goes to make some*

This is what dreams are made of!! Puppy chow is delicious; add Nutella and words can’t describe how good it is!
Its been so long since I’ve had puppy chow! (I’m a native of Pennsylvania and that’s what we call it there too!) I honestly can’t believe I’ve never thought of making it with Nutella before! Two thumbs up, Laura!

Looks so good, think i need to try this out.
I’ve never heard of Puppy Chow! Do any UK people know a Cereal we have like this? All i can think of is Shredded Wheat but that would be no where near as tasty! haha. I think i would skip the powdered sugar as i’m a chocolate fiend and wouldn’t want anything to overpower that!
I have never heard of this.
Us damned Aussies and our not-weird food.
But seriously, puppy chow is a revolting name and a new one must be found.
My mouth is already watering. I need to make this right now! It looks amazing.

This looks too good to be true. I don’t know if this is an American thing but I rarely see or hear of puppy chow around here in Canada.
