Wanna make your kitchen smell amazing without baking anything? Then get out your crock pots, because we are going to make applesauce. Yum!This recipe will make quite a bit of apple sauce, so feel free to store in jars and pass it out to friends to enjoy. Unless you do proper canning these should be enjoyed within two weeks. My secret ingredient for awesome applesauce: whiskey! Of course. It's my secret ingredient for cinnamon rolls and apple pie as well. Although I am (obviously) a whiskey kind of gal, you can easily leave it out of this recipe, and it's still super delicious. Overnight (Whiskey) Applesauce, adapted from here.
6-8 lbs baking apples (any variety is fine)
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon whiskey (Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey is sweet so it works great here)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
a pinch of sea salt
Peel and cut up the apples. It doesn't need to be super small pieces, make 6-8 pieces per apple. Combine the apples with all the other ingredients in a crock pot. Just dump it all in. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours (overnight). Once it's ready the apples with be super soft so you can mash them up with a wooden spoon easily, if you want a more traditional applesauce consistency. Warm applesauce is an awesome breakfast or snack. You can also use applesauce in baking (like muffins or cakes, etc.). Make a batch of applesauce this week. Enjoy! xo. Emma

What perfect timing! I just went apple picking and need to figure out what to do with all the apples I bought. I just posted pictures of my haul today. I like the addition of vanilla in this recipe. Usually I just add cinnamon.
This looks so good! Perfect to make ahead for early uni lectures! xo
Oh, how lovely! This sounds perfectly warm and comforting for fall! And the honey whiskey? What a great idea!
Thanks for sharing!

It seems like there is very little whiskey. Does it really add that much flavor?

I had a bad stomach bug last week, and my amazing husband made me applesauce 3 times! We do a paleo diet, so we leave out the sugar, and it actually tastes just as good! I’ll have to try this crock pot method for sure:)

If you don’t peel the apples then the applesauce will take on a pink hue. I never peel mine when don’t traditionally. Not sure how it would work in the crock pot but I love my pink fall applesauce!
I like your Picture so much !

I don’t have a slow cooker – can I do this just over a low heat on the hob?
Although from the sounds of it, it way be worthwhile investing in a slow cooker!
I would love to wake up to that smell!
I love stewed apples in my porridge on cold, wintery mornings 😀

So you just eat applesauce? I’m Australian and I’ve never really encountered that before. On toast for breakfast? How exactly?
Oh my goodness, anything with whiskey in it automatically makes it better 🙂

This looks all kinds of amazing! Is it OK to simmer it on the stove for a few hours since I don’t have a crockpot?
Tried this and it’s just amazing! Thanks for sharing this recipe. too bad we don’t have a crock pot large enough to make more at once. Cheers! <3

Hey!
I live in Scotland so we’re all about the winter warmers.
You don’t even need to put it on toast, just in a bowl like you’d have cereal or over porridge or something else stodgy to keep the chill out!
Great recipe, can’t wait to try it. Do you need the slow cooker or could I cook it on low using the stove top instead?
This looks great! I am going to a Québecois inspired potluck on Friday (I am Canadian!) and so replaced the Jack with some Canadian maple whiskey, Sortilège, and so far it smells delicious.
Thanks Emma!
So this one was exciting to make, I actually didn’t put as many apples and overcooked it by like an hour… the apples became almost caramelized, and the water almost completely evaporated. I mashed them and it is almost a compote, sooo good!
We have been spreading it over toasted bread for breakfast! 🙂
WOW! Whiskey and apples, I DEFINITELY will need to try this. Your pics make this look delicious! I’m already salivating (which is a bit of a downer because even if I could make it right now, I would have to wait 8+ hours!!)
Thanks for the recipe!
I was a little skeptical, but I decided to try it because I got a Crock Pot on my birthday (end of september) and I love applesauce.
I did it with Sortilege, a canadian whiskey with maple syrup.
This new receipe was a success ! Thanks for sharing !
Do you think it could be frozen? I’m assuming it will, but wondering if all the alcohol will cook out?
yumm! oh, i bet this would be so good with caramel vodka too! 🙂
My husband and I made this last night. We substituded the honey whiskey for what we had on hand, Crown Royal Maple. Mmm…so good. Thanks for the recipe!
