Hot chocolate is probably one of my favorite autumn/winter beverages! And although I am no stranger to store-bought hot chocolate mix for a quick and easy treat I wanted to create a hot chocolate recipe that was more like a decadent dessert drink.
This Salted Caramel version really fits the bill. It will be quite rich and thick and although I just adore caramel paired with a little sea salt, if you don't like the sweet and salty combination then just leave the salt in this recipe out.
Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate, makes 2 large servings.
Needed: 16 ounces milk or cream (I used a combination of 8 ounces milk and 8 ounces cream), 4 ounces dark chocolate, 4 ounces chocolate caramel (such as Hershey's version), a pinch or two of sea salt.
In a sauce pan or small pot heat half (8 ounces) of the milk and 4 ounces chopped dark chocolate and salt until melted. Continue heating and whisk in the remaining milk and 4 ounces chopped chocolate caramel. Continue whisking until the entire mixture is warmed through and smooth in texture.
Serve with a little whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel and a sprinkle of sea salt.
Have fun sipping something sweet. xo, emma + elsie

omg yum!!!
Looks delicious!
This sounds amazing! What a great dessert drink for the colder months. :))
I made salted caramel hot chocolate a lot last winter and found that using caramel topping (the thick Hershey’s kind) worked really well. Rich chocolate’s not my thing, so it helped level it out some. Yours looks dreamy, though!
that looks delicious!
i can’t wait for it to be cool enough to make this!
Oh my goodness, this looks like the most delicious dessert π
this looks AMAZING!
I make this for my mom’s group this morning and it was a huge hit!!! who needs Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Mocha Frappucino when you have this recipe!!! we LOVED it!
Oh My Yum! I’m making myself a bath of this tonight … π
@Hope: Hi Hope. You could make your own caramel. It’s not that difficult as long as you have access to regular sugar, butter, cream, and a little salt. There are a billion and a half homemade caramel recipes on the interwebs. I’m certain you will be able to find one that you can make with what is available to you in India.
This blog is just darling, and this drink looks stupendous!!! I will be making this for my bff when she comes to visit for the holidays! Thanks for the recipe.
Amanda, the basic compnents of caramel are sugar and butter. This is a great explanation/recipe for caramel sauce. http://www.mybakingaddiction.com/fundamentals-how-to-make-homemade-caramel-sauce/
cannot wait to try this π
I might drool. seriously! =) This looks delish!!!!! So happy I found your blog, def exploring at bit while I have downtime! mwah!
This is one of thΓ© tastiest beverages ever. I changed the recipe a bit to utilize what I had. I used caramel squares rathere than a square of caramel chocolate. I also added a splash of coffee. Yum!
I love sweet and salty! I’ll have to try this soo.
These look amazing! Thanks for the idea…and the Sugar Rush!
Where can I find chocolate caramel?
these look out.of.this.world! As it’s spring I’ve rustled up some oreo milkshakes… also called Irish milkshakes as I’ve added some baileys to them… and they are soo good. I think you salted caramel with a dash of baileys (and maybe an oreo cookie) would totally top it!
