Mmmmm!! I love appetizers. Emma and I have been known to order what we call “appetizer feasts” when we go out for dinner, so we try more apps and skip the main course. They’re delish! Today I’m excited to share my own little spicy spin on one of my favorite classic appetizers, spinach artichoke dip! Spicy Skillet Artichoke Dip, Serves a large group (perfect for a party!)
1 pound frozen spinach
1 can artichoke hearts
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon crushed chili flakes
1 teaspoon salt
1 tomato
1 red onion
Thaw, drain and chop the frozen spinach. Chop the artichoke hearts into small pieces. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, artichoke hearts, mayonnaise, sour cream, mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder and crushed chili flakes. Mix until the entire mixture is evenly moist. If you don’t like spicy food, omit the chili flakes or cut them in half for something less spicy. Pour the mixture into a cast iron skillet and top with the remaining parmesan cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden at 350°F. When it is done allow it to cool for five minutes before serving. Garnish the top with chopped tomatoes and onions. Enjoy!
I served mine with toasted pita bread. I cut the pita bread into slices, brushed them with a little oil and baked them in the oven for three to five minutes at 350°F. We all pigged out on this during work one day and later I used it to top a salad (SO good). Then I added some to a piece of baked salmon (also really good!) If you don’t make this for a party, expect to have some leftovers. xo. Elsie

Hello!
I just wanted to say that I love your blog and especially your recepies. Most of them seems so delicius! I have a problem though… like in this recepie, you wrote “1 bag frozen spinach” and well, I’m from sweden and that might be why, but here we have tons of differnt sized bags! same goes for cans and such, they can really differ in size here.
I was just wondering if you could write out how much there is in the bags or cans you use, like what they wheigt is? that would be really helpful!
Thank you! 🙂
Yummy! 🙂
^_^ Spinich! Looks delish!
yum!! this looks and sounds amazing!

Hi Johanna!
Sorry about that! I changed the copy to say “1 pound” instead of “1 bag”. My bag was a pound.

OH MY LANTA!! This looks amazing. I am such a fan of spinach & artichoke dips and I love spicy foods so this is a match made in food heaven. I will definitely have to give this a go soon. My girl friends and I always just get a bunch of appetizers whenever we go out. This way we can try out different dishes.

One of my favorite dishes to bring to pot luck dinners but C’MON guys spinach is spelled incorrectly in the title of the post.
My bad! Gosh- I feel silly about that one. 🙂 Fixed now.

Looks amazing! My mom makes the best Spinach & Artichoke dip but she never writes down the recipe so it’s slightly different every time. I think the key is to have lots of cheese. She usually puts in chunks of bocconcini (buffalo mozzarella) as well as regular mozzarella and sometimes she’ll put in smoked gouda as well. I would never have thought to eat it with tomatoes though, that sounds so delicious 🙂
I LOVE artichoke dip! It’s always so overpriced at restaurants. Can’t wait to try this, thanks for the recipe!!
this is one of my absolute favorites. DELISH!

We have a version of this in Australia where the dip is put inside a hollowed out Cobb loaf. It’s so good! To be fair, I think it’s mandatory to have it at a BBQ. But I’ve never tried it with artichoke – will definitely be trying that! Yum!
Okay, what size pan did you use? I’m so challenged! Wanna make this for an afternoon party tomorrow : )
It says 1 tablespoon of salt. Is this correct? Seemed like a lot but I made it last night and everyone agreed it was way too salty. I was disappointed because it looked so good!
Hi there! I used a small skillet (6-8 inches across)
Thanks so much! Elsie
Hi there!
Yes, it is correct.
I’m sorry it was too salty for you!
Hope your weekend was good- elsie
I think there’s an error in measurement – all of the tablespoons should probably be teaspoons. I made this earlier today and it was so incredibly salty that it was inedible :/ It seemed excessive during prep, but I wanted to trust the recipe. Mistakes happen, I’m just bummed to have to throw all the ingredients I purchased away.
I tried it today with that amount and it was inedible. My husband agreed — a tablespoon is way too much, even with bland pita and raw tomatoes :/
I see that you changed the recipe to one teaspoon of salt. Much better, thank you.
This looks like a perfect Thanksgiving appetizer for our home! What size of cast iron skillet did you use.
