I love the character a bold decor piece can bring to a room. I love it even more when I’m able to make that piece! Are there any other DIY addicts out there? Of course that wasn’t a real question. We are here on ABM after all. Anyway, I’ve been looking for the perfect wall hanging for a blank wall upstairs in our home. I was having two issues finding one: A) the money issue that can come with a custom ordered piece, and B) most of the weavings and wall hangings I found were very neutral. Neutral is great, but this space really needed some color! Like so many other DIY birth stories, I came up with this project out of necessity. Well, as necessary as a home decor item can really be. Anyway, I’m excited to show you how easy and inexpensive this DIY was!
Supplies:
–wooden dowel
–three different colors of yarn (5 skeins total)
-three embroidery hoops (23″, 14″, 8″)
-hot glue gun
-scissors
To begin, take some sharp scissors and cut your embroidery hoops in half. The two moon shapes without the screw attachment are the ones we’ll be using. Go ahead and use your hot glue gun to glue those pieces together.
Secure the end of your first yarn color to the smallest moon with hot glue, leaving a pretty lengthy tail. Begin wrapping the yarn around the outside of the moon. For every four or five wraps, run a line of glue and wrap over again. This will help your yarn stay in place and mask the squareness of the embroidery hoop. Repeat this step for all three moons.
Once you are done wrapping the yarn, measure out where your moons will be attached to the wooden dowel. Tie the yarn tails to the dowel.
Use your hot glue gun to make the moons flush with the dowel. Make sure your knots (and glue mess if there is any) are hidden on the back side. Trim the tails.
Attach a thin piece of string to the dowel and find a wall to hang it on. It’s time to add some drama (or more yarn… whatever) to this piece!
Fold a length of yarn in half and drape it over one of your moons. Pull the tails through and keep pulling until secure. Continue doing this as much or little as you’d like! Once you have enough fringe, trim so it looks nice and tidy!
Everyone who has seen this in our home has been so shocked at how simple it was to make! I think it adds the perfect amount of color and interest to a space that used to be dullsville. Oh, and I’m ALL ABOUT the quick crafts, so this was a delight! Happy crafting, friends! xo. Katie

Hi Katie,
Gathering the supplies to make this beautiful wall hanging. Can’t find 23″ bamboo hoop, could you mean 23 centimeters??
Thanks
This is beautiful! Definitely on my next crafting list with my mom and the kids! The kids love getting to use a glue gun and my mum always loved home-made creations from them (that look really nice too!)
thanks for the inspiration! Will let you know how it turns out!
Using hula hoops for this would make an amazing statement wall 🙂
Could you share what type/size of yarn you used? I love the texture!
Wall hangings bring such a warm and unique flair to a space’s home decor. Although, they can be so expensive. Defiantly going to have to give this a try!
