Laundry rooms can be, well, boring. My big project this month has been to slowly turn our laundry room into a space that's pleasant, organized and has some personality. The first project I tackled was our stripes and dots washer and dryer!
So, full disclosure, I really wanted to paint them. Like SO badly. I spent a long time researching high heat/appliance-appropriate paints. It's still on my "maybe someday" list, but I chose not to paint them because all of the paints were sprays, which would mean lugging the appliances outside for paint, dry and cure time. Since I don't have a garage it didn't seem practical, and so I started looking for options that could be done indoors instead. In the end, I'm so happy with the result, so it all worked out! A lot of projects turn out that way: One idea evolves into the next!We did a lot of testing before committing to electrical tape. There are a lot of other options including our second choice, vinyl, that would also work. In the end we chose electrical tape because it was so quick and easy to get the perfect stripes we wanted.
There are a few things you should know about electrical tape. It's awesome, because it is completely removable and therefore renter-friendly! All of the colors we have tried have come off with no residue (see above) except for black. BUT I wanted needed black and white stripes. So after our test run, when we used Goo Gone to remove the residue and it came off quickly and easily! So, if you're like me and just have to use black tape, be sure to remember you'll need Goo Gone if you ever choose to remove the tape in the future!
To get the dots we used plastic (like what you would find a toy packaged in) to adhere the tape to, then we cut dots through both layers with scissors and peeled the tape off the plastic and used it for the dots pattern. This project took two rolls of black electrical tape and about three hours to complete. I can't wait to share the rest of the room with you soon (it's still a work in progress!) Hope your day is great today. xo. Elsie

Awe- thank you SO MUCH for that. Good luck on your house hunt!

I am so confused by how you did the dots…the instructions just didn’t make any sense to me. Cute project, though!
Hi there!
So instead of just cutting the tape (since it’s sticky and can muck up your scissors) we first stuck the tape to thin plastic, then cut the dots, then peeled the dots off the plastic and stuck them to the dryer. Hope that helps!

I. Freaking. Love. This.

Thanks for the detail! I was confused, too π LOVE how it all turned out!

Oh wow, I never would have even thought about decorating a washing machine, but as usual you come up with the most amazing ideas. Love it!
Loved!! Awesome!!!
Reaaaaally cute! I always thought that laundry rooms were kind of embarrassing because they really are boring and sometimes pretty dusty and dirty! This is such a good idea though! Why don’t companies make pre-cute machines, I wonder!!

I love this! I must say that the laundry room has definitely been neglected, as far as looking cuteness goes, in our home! Might be time to rethink that.
That is just… wow.

Thanks for sharing this. Love the simple and inexpensive idea. Am going to take to jazzing up my washer as well. Just wondering, have you ever considered using washi tape or is it not durable enough? Just a thought.
Best idea ever! I agree with you, laundry rooms are usually so boring and just there for function. I love that you kept the function and made it beautiful! Happy Wednesday!

This is so adroable! I would have never thought! I also am very, very impressed with how straight those stripes are!!
These are super cute! I love the idea!!! You girls are the best!
oh my – cutest idea!
Gosh, this is SO cute! Pretty sure it would inspire me to do more laundry! Love the idea of making even just the simple and seemingly unimportant places in the home cute and pleasant to be in!

Love love love! Need to try this…. I did once use goof off… (Not sure if it’s stronger or my washing machine had different paint or epoxy?) on my washing machine to wipe off something and it wiped the white paint right off leaving the exposed steel… So it was most likely operator error on my part, but maybe a caution for someone doing it in a rental! Love this!
Love them! I’d love to try the stripes on mine!
I love your electrical tape projects! You’ve given me lots of ideas π
Love it, the most neglected room in my house. How cute it could look. Totally inspired.
what a great idea! We remodeled our laundry room last year, but it is still boringβ¦I want to try something fun like this!
My favorite prints!! awesome idea, i never thought in this
xo from Central America
It is adorable! I love this idea – oh and btw, high temp paint does come in a little tin at Home Depot, you just have to look for it in the high temp paint section–but I actually like the practicality of using removable tape even better!

This is such a cute idea, I would never think of it! I love how serious you approach the task, including testing and consider your readers to be in different situations – renting etc., that’s really nice.
This is something I’ll definitely keep in mind for when we move and have our own laundry room. Worth the 3 hours! π

I see on instagram and I love it. Very creative! ^^
I’ll try that, it just looks fantastic… π
This is absolutely brilliant!!!
I’m so going to do this as I live in a tiny rented apartment and my washer and dryer are in my bathroom which doesn’t make it nice to have a shower at all.
So thank you so much for this great inspiration. (And it might even make cleaning my bathroom more fun… ha! Who am I kidding π )
Doesn’t it make them look freindlier! I am definitely going to give this a go! Thanks Guys
i am almost obsessed with this right now. especially the stripes! it’s so weird… i can’t stop looking at a washer and dryer. haha
First, incredibly cute. What a fun way to add whimsy to a “work room”. Second, Goo Gone is just awesome:)
I didn’t know, my washing machine needed a Make-Over.
But now…
I definitely want to decorate the machine, but maybe I will use Masking Tape instead – there are so many possibilities.
Thanks for the idea!!
Wowww Amazing Project! I love this idea. Washing machines are so boring, but with washi tape are so beautiful! Good!
SO cute! Such a fun way to liven up a laundry room! π

Thanks,

have never thought of prettying something as ordinary as your washer and dryer.. but, i love it!
xx
This is so much fun! I want to try this
Very cute, but I’ve heard of problems with electrical tape curling and pealing off of projects (especially when humidity is involved). Let us know how it holds up over time please!
what a great idea!
xo, cheyenne
That looks amazing, love it! I’m a big fan of electrical tape. I used it to stripe tall white candles for Halloween for a Beetleguise look. It worked great! I also recently dolled up my laundry room, all black and white. It’s so much nicer being in there now that it’s pretty, and it’s no longer “the Embarrassing Room” π See it here: http://theyearoflivingfabulously.com/2013/08/05/the-great-laundry-room-make-over-of-2013-part-4-done-well-almost-curtains-work-surface-nearly-free-of-course/ Thinking the tape would be awesome on the boring white refrigerator, hmmm…

I just wanted to say that I just discovered your blog and I love it so much. The love and hardwork that you all put into it really shines through. It’s amazing what you all have accomplished. Thank you for brightening my day!!
P.S. I have talked all the women in my (very traditional) family to wear flower crowns on Thanksgiving π
I love this project! It brought a lot of personality and uniqueness to the appliances. I think it would make me WANT to go into my laundry room if my washer and dryer looked like that!
AMAZING idea
This is something I should totally try at my place as our Washer & Dryer are ‘on show’ in our Bathroom. Love it!

Oh my gosh this is too cute!!
That’s a fun way to dress up your washer and dryer. Mine are old and we are making them last until they completely die but I’m sick of them. I might do this to make me love them again.

I’ve never seen such a beautiful washer/dryer set before.
ahhh I’ve been planning on doing this to our washer/dryer too! Our laundry room is a mess right now… but this is finally giving me the kick in the butt to start making it pretty! Can’t wait to see the rest!
So cute…you went there.
You are SO creative and talented! I love this fun look!
Love. Such a great idea.
All those times that my mom yelled at me for drawing on things–i’m throwing them out the window.

OMG this is adorable!!
I love it! But how did you get stripe so straight? It looks great because lines are perfectly straight. I think I would mess it up. Any suggestion?
Great Idea π now the laundry room doesn’t seem boring at all! Some geometric pattern would be cool too.
Oh, I just love how you make everything pretty.
Such a GREAT idea!!

p.s. I will write this idea to my blog, of course by referring you π

Michael’s (craft stores) has punchers that punch out circles that big (and a ton of other shapes) it would totally punch through tape if you needed it too. Would be way easier than cutting them out yourself!
I LOVE this!!! I’ve had the painted washer/dryer thing pinned forever but the work involved has always stopped me too. This is brilliant! Quick question though – why did you rule out washi tape? I’ve use electrical tape on things before and it is pretty tricky to remove if its left on for an extended period of time. I have a roll of black washi tape already so I’m just wondering if there was a reason behind that π Thanks!
Hi there-
I do not think washi tape would be durable enough. I also like electrical tape better because it’s waterproof, so if you windex your appliances it won’t affect your design.
XO! elsie
Hi Jo,
I haven’t tried contact paper but I would be afraid it would peel up. No harm in trying, though! Let me know what you think if you do try it!
elsie
Thanks so much Becky!!! That means so much to me today!
Also- please post a photo of the flower crowns! That’s so special!!!
xx- elsie
Hi! The best suggestion I have is to take your time and don’t be afraid to remove a piece if you mess up. It’s easier than it looks, I promise!
elsie
Hi Libby!
I think washi tape would be too temporary for something like this. It would likely peel up or get messed up when in contact with liquid. I like that the electrical tape is water resistant, so you can windex and wipe right over it! If it wasn’t an appliance, the washi might work though!
xoxo- elsie
I love it!! Those washer and dryer are usually not that pretty in a laundry room but with this upgrade it looks amazing!!
I did vinyl pink and black polka dots on mine. I love it! I also have to give kudos to my hubby for totally embracing the cuteness redo. http://www.unknownmami.com/2013/08/diy-polka-dot-washer-and-dryer.html
So cute and beautiful ! A great idea to pimp up boring laundry rooms ! I will be doing it asap ! Thanks for sharing !!!
I just did this with my washer and dryer! My hand cut circles were awful. Completely awful. Because my washer and dryer and are smaller than average, I ended up using a hole punch to create perfect circles. It was very time consuming because the dots were so small, but I love it now that it is (finally) done.
I love this! I live in an apartment with a stackable set in the kitchen which always looks sad but now I am getting ideas!
omg that just gave me hope for my laundry room… u guys rock!
Soooo cute!! I love this. π
I saw the photos and knew what you used before you even mentioned it. I think it’s amazing. I will definitely be doing something like this someday when we own our own washer and dryer!
I have the unfortunate issue of having my washing machine in my kitchen. I hate it. This is a super cute and easy way to add some style to the ugly appliance
This project turned out great!
Problem: Guest have to pass through the little laundry room to use the bathroom … Thank goodness I’m only renting.
Solution: stripes on the washer and polka dots on the dryer door & stripes on the machine. (older washer & dryer had more surface to cover). For the polka dots I used dimes instead of the game piece.
This made the area less embarrassing… Many thanks!
wonder if I could use a circle punch on vinyl sheets at craft store?
That is sooo cute .would have never. Thought of it THANK YOU and will pass on the idea.
I’m so thinking of pink and purple vinyl stars.. I think it would look great….!!
