I seriously love it when I get to start a hair tutorial with, “This style is great for second (or third or fourth) day hair.” My hair only gets washed about two times a week (hey, I’ve gotta preserve that vivid color), so any style that helps get me through the week is ace in my book! Dirty hair club forever. Or, dry shampoo club forever. Who’s with me? We need a good name for our club.
Anyway, let me show you how I did this everyday French twist. It’s really great for hair that hasn’t been freshly washed and is actually pretty simple to tackle!
Step One: Alright, this is usually my step one for every hair tutorial. I love a little volume on top, I’m not gonna lie. So first, tease the hair at the crown of your head. Make it all messyโ we’re going to smooth it down in the next step.
Step Two: Gather the sides of your hair to the back of the head. Smooth down the crazy top section and pin in place. Are you with me so far?
Step Three: Gather your hair to one side of your head and pin. You will be pinning over your first round of bobby pins, as shown above.
Step Four: Okay! Now that you’ve pinned your hair to one side, take the remaining hair and gather it into a ponytail. Wrap the hair around your hand and roll it in toward your head. If your hair is on the shorter side, but you still have enough for a small pony, you can accomplish this step by wrapping hair around a couple of fingers instead of your hand.
Step Five: Once you’ve gotten your hair rolled to your head, it’s time to pin it securely in place! As you can see from the photo above, you will want to pin inside the roll. It’s super easy to hide the bobby pins this way so you don’t end up A) having a head full of visible bobby pins, or B) a flat roll on the back of your head. Unless you like that. And then I say GO FOR IT. Finish your look with a little hairspray and you’re done!
Even though I obviously missed out in the curly hair department, despite the fact that my dad had a full head of curly swirly locks (shaking my fist at you, genetics), I’m pretty confident this style would be ultra cute on you curly girls out there (I’m looking at you, Rachel). If you try this style, make sure and tweet me (@skunkboy) or tag me on Instagram so I can see! I love it when you guys share! xo. Katie

I’m one of those lucky girls with curls, or at least waves, so I’m pretty excited to give this a try! It’s so chic, and I’ll bet it would work even better on hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or two.

The Dirty Hairy club! I too am a member ๐
Gorgeous! I wish I was better at putting my hair up, definitely looks better on my 3rd day of not washing my hair than leaving it down. Must try this!

Love this! I need more styles that don’t take forever; I usually just end up with a ponytail. My dad has strawberry blonde wavy hair, so I too am “shaking my fist at you, genetics” haha ๐
Such a lovely style! Will definitely be trying this be trying this one out soon! xx
Pretty! ๐
Beautiful, Katie Shelton!
I love your tutorials.
Thank you, Katie Helton

Simply beautiful! I wish my hair was longer so I could try it ๐
Trying this out for my date tomorrow night ๐ http://meowemily.blogspot.com
Totally in that ‘dirty hair club’ with you… Dry shampoo is my best friend! Thanks for sharing, as I am always looking for different things to do with my hair a couple days after a wash! ๐

Lovely!

BEAU-TY-FUL! So vintage and classic– but with a casual twist!
xoxo Totally trying this tomorrow xoxo

Love this! Would it be possible to get a video of this tutorial? I can follow it all the way to the rolling part. I get confused during that part and the pictures don’t clarify it enough for me! A video would make it easier. Here’s hoping!
This looks so nice on her red hair! I love it!
Oh my what a cute hairstyle!! I suck at following tutorials though , my hair just ends up tangled and a mess!

ฮ can’t be a long haired girl (it doesn’t suit me AT ALL!) but if I were I’d try that for sure! so elegant! thank you for posting.
So jealous, I have super greasy hair so I have to wash it basically every day for it to look half decent! Still love the tutorial though, French twists are such a lovely style ๐
Gorgeous, gorgeous do! Definitely trying it out today! ๐
Love this post! The hairstyle looks amazing !!
Gorgeous and simple! I love updos that only require a few bobby pins. It’s such a nice alternative to a ponytail or messy top bun. As my hair gets to be shoulder length for the first time in probably a decade, I’m looking for new ways to style it! Can’t wait to give this a go!

Love it! I am definitely going to try this, except I have EXTREMELY thick hair, so bobby pins rarely hold it in placeโฆ but I’ll sure be trying ๐
Thanks for sharing!

You make it look so easy but I’m sure that if I try, there will be some colateral damage (I’m thinking new Bobby pin piercing in my ears… )

I have been looking for a quick but beautiful hair style for my long hair. I’ll give it a try and hope for the best!
My hair needs to grow NOW. You make it look so easy and fun! I loved this style.
Thanks, Katie.
I love all of these hairstyles, perfect for fall!

I am also in the dirty hair club. I am also in the curly hair club. I love the tutorial for this hair style. Can not wait to try it!!!
Iยดm your new fan! ๐ Managed to do this with my shoulder lenght hair. Now I really want them to grow quickly… And I love all those braids you have posted
I would love to hear tips on how to leave your hair dirty. I can’t stand it! Although I know that it would probably be better for my hair in the long run. I wash every day. It gets so icky. Love to hear everyone’s ideas.
This style is cute, but your Dolly Parton is my all time fave! Love it. I need more teasing, more height! ๐
Thank you for the doable tutorial! Quick question, I have short hair (back ends at the nape of my neck, tapers slightly longer towards the front) and I often do this type of ‘do in lieu of a ponytail-esque option for my day 2 or 3 days. Sometimes teasing works out just fine and I achieve a Bump It worthy dome of mod-inspired perfection. But other times – no matter what I try – my part pops open in the middle leaving a weird gap. Any ideas on how to fix this guy? Thanks so much, love your blog!
gorgeous
Oh, thank you. I thought I was the only one out there that didn’t wash every day. I am hopeless with braids and the ponytail is really boring. This looks like something I could do!
Cute! I’ve tried styles like this and it never works for me. I’m pretty sure my hair is too think for bobby pins alone to hold up. But maybe the ones I’m using are too small.
Great tutorial, thanks ๐
Do you have any French twist/easy updo tutorials for really long, thick and heavy hair? I feel like no matter how many bobby pins I have in my hair, my hair always falls apart after just an hour or two. But I hate washing my hair so I need to figure out a hairstyle that suits me! Getting bored of plain buns on top of my head ๐
This is so gorgeous! I can’t wait to try it.

Definitely in the dirty hair club! Will be trying this for work very soon…:)
Love it, what a great comb thanks
This is adorable and looks incredibly easy to do, it’s the sort of thing that doesn’t need to look to neat to be good! I’ll be giving this a try

I love it. I’m going to try this!
Definitely going to try this! I’ve been looking for good ways to style my hair that require minimum heat styling and would be good to keep my hair away from baby fingers (I have an eight month old and he LOVES to eat my hair.) This is such a pretty, simple way to get it out of the way!
Also, I only ever wash my hair about twice a week, too. It’s better for your hair anyway, or so I’m told! ๐

I am loving the simplicity of this, I have a daughter who has long hair, my own is short now, the trouble we have is finding styles which look really smart yet are doable with my arthritic hands.
This looks totally doable and will be a very nice grown up smart look for those occasions where a pony tail does not cut it, though she is only 6.
Wooow i love you colour hair. I’ve got the red hair too but mi colour is dark, what is the dye what you use?
Thanks! xx
Oh that looks so nice and funky. I feel like my hair is too thin for this, but I am going to try anyway!

I’m definitely going to have to try this! Also a part of the Dirty Hair Club! ๐

Love it, but it doesn’t work with my hair (long, straight, undyed). The twist sticks out, can’t lay it down and it’s too smooth. 3rd day hair, but still…. :-/
LOVE THIS! Definitely gonna give it a try! I love the look of french twists, but they usually give me a headache, this looks way more relaxed!
Xx from the Girl in the Houndstooth Coat
Your tutorial is awesome. Shows all the steps very clearly! Thank you
Could you girls try posting hair styles for curly (and i mean REALLY curly) hair?
It would be super appreciated since I find it impossible to do anything with mine
thanks!
This is GORGEOUS! Thank you! I always have my hair back in a low ponytail. What a fab alternative!
I can’t wait to try this hairstyle.I love the messy but sheik look. Thanks for the fun tutorial.
I love it! Going to try it and hope my pin straight Asian hair holds in this type of bun – I’ll need lots of pins! xx
I have curly hair which I only wash every third day, so I am with you on the “dirty hair” club. I love the look of the tattoo you have at the base of your neck, could you tell me what it says?
Hi, beautiful look. Thanks for sharing with us. I will try to do it. Gracias Ana
Love this look, hopefully simple enough for me to do in the mornings and much nicer than just a ponytail.
Wow – this styling look super cute on you! I really have to try it! ๐ All the best from Munich,

Gorgeous and your hair is a stunning colour!
Still need someone to do this for me ๐
I can’t wait to try this out!!
so pretty! would you share your preferred dry shampoo? Also, does your scalp get itchy after not washing for so long? Mine does, maybe a different shampoo?
Looks great. I’m going to have a go at this for work. Will make a change from my boring pony tail ๐
