Want a fun challenge for yourself? Try making your favorite braid while upside down, or at least with your head flipped upside down. Bonus: the challenge will also yield a cute new hairstyle and twist on your favorite top knot or ballerina bun. Or at least that is what I kept telling myself as I tried to learn this hairstyle with all the blood rushing to my head and my braids falling apart! But as with everything, it’s just a matter of practice makes perfect, so keep at it even if you’re initially struggling. It’s really no harder than a traditional Dutch braid. It’s just a different angle that makes things a little more difficult at first.
Step One: Flip your hair forward and brush thoroughly; I like to keep my brush handy and continue to brush small sections as I go along.
Step Two: Take a small section at the nape of your neck and begin your braid.
Step Three: Add small pieces of hair to each section as you braid; tuck each section underneath the other sections for a Dutch braid like mine. (detailed tutorial on a Dutch braid here)
Step Four: You can stop adding hair to your braid when you reach your ears.
Step Five: Gather all of your hair and twist into a simple top knot; secure it with an elastic and a few bobby pins.
As always, I like to pancake my braid a bit for a fuller look – I’m addicted to thick braids! A smaller, tighter braid or even traditional French braid in this style is great for active days. I wore my hair like this for a hike recently, and it didn’t budge an inch. I don’t usually wear my hair in a top knot, but now that I’ve mastered this style, I might wear my hair like that more. I’m already imagining more ways I can dress it up; maybe with a little braid around the bun or even a bit of ribbon… Cheers, Rebecca.

I would love to see some tips for those of us with short hair. These look like they would be fun to try, but I have fine, shoulder length hair,so unfortunately all of the hair articles are totally useless to me 🙁
Such a dashing hair colour! How do you keep it so vibrant?
Hi Robyn,
I made a similar comment to yours last week. While my hair is on the long side, it is definitely not thick. So, I understand where you are coming from in regards to the posts. I want to see someone with fine (and ever shorter hair) try this. I envy people with long, thick hair! 🙂
I often see people with this hairstyle and it always looks so complicated. You make it sound so easy!

I feel ya! I just cut off most of my hair so I’m trying to figure out how to style short hair. I posted a tutorial on my blog for a side shave braid that works great on short hair (http://swoki.at/2016/07/09/side-shave-braid-side-shave-zopf/), feel free to check it out 🙂
Also, I use booster powder to give my braids more volume, it works great!
I’ve tried this type of braid with a regular french braid, it’s really hard to do. Maybe the dutch braid will be easier. Yours looks amazing.

I love your hair, even though you say it’s not thick it really really healthy and textured. What shampoo and conditioner do you use?

This was on my mind this unusually muggy morning as I prepared to go to the market. A no-hair-on-neck day. It wasn’t perfect, but it did hold all morning.
This hair color is so vibrant and pretty!

Hi Aleksandra, thanks! I only wash my hair with cold water and try not to wash it too often, that seems to help it stay bright 🙂
Hi Amy, I’m using Garnier Fructis shampoo & conditioner right now, some type with argan oil and I also put argan oil into my tips when they’re drying. But I find not washing my hair too often and washing with cold water makes a bigger difference than the brand/type of shampoo I use.
When you say you wash your hair with cold water, do you do it in the sink, or do you mean like cooler than regular shower? Random, I know, but even a quick shock of cold at the end of my shower has me doing crazy yoga moves to keep it from hitting my back!
Very cute! I will have to try this now that my hair has gotten longer =o)

This is beautiful! I just need a person to do it for me, or I need to practice for hours!
