I started my first blog about five years ago, just for fun. At the time I had no particular goals or plans for my blog outside of posting photos of my craft projects and family. Through the years blogging has become a special part of my life and through this blog I've been able to connect with like minded people throughout the world. I truly love sharing both little snapshots of my personal life and things that inspire me here. I thought it would be fun to share a few things I've learned along the way. These tips are primarily written with personal/lifestyle bloggers in mind. The number one question I receive, in regards to blogging, is 'how did your blog become so popular?'. While I can't answer that question, I can tell you that I honestly believe that blogs grow when they are written with pure intentions (not just to get 'hits'). Blogs written with a genuine voice will always be more fun to read. Focus on the quality of your blog, first and foremost. Your readers will love you for it! Here are my 5 quick tips for blogging…
1. Create a blog you'd enjoy reading.
Don't allow yourself to feel pressured to write about anything other than what you absolutely love! You'll connect with other bloggers who share your interests, and most of all you'll be proud of what you're creating! If you're a new blogger, make a list of the five things you love most in life. These are topics that should reoccur often in your blog.
Blogging is a lot of work and it's not worth doing if you're not creating a blog that you wouldn't read yourself! Quality blogging takes a little bit of time, sometimes a little research and when you're proud of what you are creating, it shows. A great blog will grow and change over time with the author. As a reader, I love to see blogs developing and changing slightly over time. A huge part of keeping a blog is staying current, so out with the old and in with the new.
2. Develop regular features that are fun to write.
I started writing regular features a few years ago with '10 Things I Love Sunday' and have added several more since. This feature is really fun to write, which keeps me consistent. The features that I continue to write are all very enjoyable. I strongly feel that if it's not fun to write, it's probably not fun to read. Choose topics you enjoy.
Another tip is to choose topics that you play off of your strengths! Do you love trend watching, photography, story time or online shopping? Choose one or two regular features that you are knowledgeable about and very interested in. Think of your blog as a mini magazine. What monthly magazine features do you love to read?
3. Your blog is not your best friend.
(This next one is purely my own personal opinion.)
A common mistake new bloggers often make is using their blog to vent about problems and small annoyances in everyday life. The first time this is done the blogger will get lots of concerned and sympathetic comments. Maybe even a few times. But after this becomes a regular part of the routine readers will often begin to avoid the blog because of the negativity they know they will find. The truth is, most people read blogs to get inspired or learn about things they are interested in. Not many people want to spend their coffee break reading about someone's problems… reading blogs is supposed to be an enjoyable escape from everyday life. I mean, we all have problems.
Solution: When you need to get something out of your system, e-mail your best friend! If you want to write something negative on your blog, sleep on it and see how you feel the next day. I appreciate bloggers who save heavy blog posts for important times instead of every bad day that comes along.
4. Make friends.
Don't be shy! There are hundreds of beautiful and interesting blogs out there. Become a reader, leave comments, make friends and promote each other. Don't be afraid to try guest blogging for friends (or allowing them to guest blog for you while on vacation or during a busy week), adding links to blogs you enjoy and finding ways to support each other. Be kind and friendly and others will return the favor.
5. Trust your instincts.
Listen to your intuition. If something doesn't feel right, don't do it. You don't always have to do what other bloggers are doing. Years ago I had a series of experiences that led me to value my own privacy. If you are a private person (even a little) this tip is for you!
Since there are no rules when it comes to blogging, make your own. I have a mental list of certain things that I absolutely never discuss on my blog. That list makes me feel like I have a healthy balance of private vs. public life. Outside of that list, I can and will blog about anything I feel like. This keeps my blog feeling personal! Learn what you are comfortable with. You don't have to share 'everything' to keep a warm and personal blog. :)
Thanks for reading! If you have any tips from your blogging experiences I'd love to hear them. XO. elsie

Thanks for this Elsie! I’ve been blogging for just about 2 years and I still feel as though I’m finding my feet but it’s such a fun journey!
thanks so much! my e-mail is elsie AT redvelvetart DOT com
Great tips, Elsie! <3
great tips elsie. your blog is one of my favourites and it’s so nice of you to share these tips. i agree with the staying positive part the most. i love reading inspirational, non-complainy blogs. let’s make the internet a happier place, one blog at a time. hehe.

Thank you so much. Even though I’ve only been blogging for a month, I have been reading all my favorite blogs over and over, and finding new favorite blogs every day that have really inspired me. Your advice makes perfect sense. I just left a note on your Twitter update too…but don’t think I’m stalking you!! xo
good stuff here 🙂
Thank you for the tips!! I’m new to blogging, but I do love it!! And I love your blog!!!
Excellent advice, thank you! My blog is only a few weeks old and these are great tips to keep in mind =)
Great tips. But, I disagree with #3… Though I think there is a line of too much negativity, too much information, and rudeness, I’ve found it empowering to blog honestly about what it is that I’m going through. And I’ve had a lot of readers say that’s why they read my blog. To know their not alone and work past that.
I think it comes down to the reasons one blogs. It makes sense in your situation to have those standards, but encouraging fake positivity seems a little dangerous…
I guess my blog is ‘me’ and why should I hide that? I have certain things I won’t blog about, like if I’m having issues with a certain friend or business problem, I won’t mention that on my blog. And I work hard not to embarrass, criticize, or share too much information about people in my life.
But, I try to find a balance between sharing a bad day experience and being positive.
Anyways. Just my two cents! 🙂
Wow Elsie! What a wonderful blog post! As someone who’s been blogging awhile but just recently started being more serious about it I really appreciate posts like this one. Your blog is a huge inspiration to me and I love reading your posts. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been a design blog addict for oh, years, and finally started my own! I look forward to making new blog friends, and this is all great advice for making a great blog. Thanks!
“Your blog is not your best friend.”
HOW TRUE!!!!
Kara, you have a good point! I agree that some bloggers have the ability to write about bad days & experiences in a mature & fun-to-read way! People, like you, with this ability are thoughtful and intentional about what they right.. It’s not just non-filtered bad mood spam. That makes a huge difference to me! Cheers. Els
These are really great tips! In fact I just had an idea/inspiration come out of nowhere while reading this. 🙂
It’s a lot of work but the blogging journey is so enjoyable & worth developing; it just takes time, as I’m learning.
Thanks so much for sharing.

elsie, thanks for your tips, I am new to blogger and truth if I found it a bit difficult because I post my crafts, but sometimes did not want or write the description of the product, because I had many problems at home, sometimes might write about my problems but I closed my laptop and talk to my best friend hehehe I take my coffee while reading your blog is great

Thank you so much for this post! It’s so helpful!! =)
I have a specific question! How do you get those perfect little playlists in your posts? I’ve been trying to add that “feature” to my blog and can’t seem to get it right…
THANK YOU!
i love this.
i’ve been blogging for about 7 months now and it does get very, very frustrating at times. often I’ll write something I think is great and find no comments the next day, or I’ll get annoyed being unable to capture an outfit just how I wanted, but I know it’s all a learning curve, and more than anything else, it’s great experience!! lots of employers like to see people who are creative and enjoy writing, especially as I want to be a magazine writer myself. I’ve learn a lot from blogging and the blogging community, and I’m constantly learning. I know it will be a great help in my future!!
I’m saving this page for the future!!

That was great. i really needed that! im new to blogging, but i’ve been having tons of fun! Thanks for the helpful tips!
ohhhh i definitely needed this! i just started blogging, and i was a little unsure about what all to do with it! thank you for your constant inspiration :]
Thanks for the tips Elsie! I’m pretty new to blogging, but I’m having so much fun with it so far that I don’t think I want to stop anytime soon. Your tips should help me have even more fun! 🙂
Awesome! Thanks for posting this. I am new to blogging. I’ve only had my blog for a few months. I definitely have a lot to learn. It’s nice to get a little help every once in a while from an experienced blogger. You’re the best!! 🙂
I love, love, love this series of posts from you. I think you should make it a regular! 🙂 I had the purpose of my blog come to me in the middle of the night a few nights ago…and WOW…I had no idea that it would go that way. Remember I told you I liked giving rather than selling my creations? Now I found a way to give. I’ll keep you posted. I am giddy about this…sooooo excited. 🙂 Yay! You are a dear.
loved all these. thanks for sharing!!
Great tips, especially number 3. There were times where I almost fell victim to that but then snapped out of it. 🙂
perfect timing for this post- i’ve been wanting to start blogging for a little while now, but i’ve been hesitant. now i’m super pumped to get started! yay! 🙂
I agree with you (Elsie) about not using the blog to vent all griefs. I feel like I labor over things enough in my head…mostly things to do with my job. So I decided to specifically NOT mention anything like that in my blog, and keep it instead as something that (like you said) I think *I* would like to read, if it was a someone else’s blog. It’s a perfect distraction from the crappy day to day stuff and more of a reminder of things I really like and things that make me happy. It also seems like such a great way to make friends with like-minded people.
Elsie I am just loving your new 5 tips posts. They are all so helpful I just have one quick QUESTION. I was wondering about the guest blogging. I mean I dont want to give away my password and email, so that they can guest blog. So is there some other way to do it?
p.s. I am using blogspot. If that makes any kind of difference.
THIS WOULD BE SO HELPFUL TO KNOW
thanks
xoxo

Thanks for the tips. I am really liking this new feature you’re doing. Like many others I have recently started a blog. My friend and I started it to share ideas, projects and inspiration with each other. I came up with the idea after hearing about your shared journals with Rachel (from the story class). Hope you having a good monday….if such a thing is possible 😉
Wow. As a blogger who is relatively new to this wild and wooly world, I really appreciate coming across quality tips like the ones you have shared. I plan to take these to heart. Thanks very much. (How can I “follow” you?)

i LOVED these tips! i (being a new blogger myself) will find these very handy to keep in mind..thanks!
p.s. love your blog!
hi! these were all helpful tips, but i feel the thing that is preventing me from stating my own blog is that i have no idea how to make it look pretty and have my own style. i’m not extremely techno savy, either.
can you give us some tips on how you have made your blog so cute?
Thanks Elsie! Great post to keep us new bloggers motivated and inspired.
Love your tips!! It’s so true – I have stopped reading many a blog mainly because I just felt too depressed every time I visited and read about their problems every time.
Love reading yours!!!
This is super helpful. I was suggested to your blog a couple months back, and have been hooked ever since. You are such an inspiring woman!
these tips were superb girl! Thanks!
Awesome. I love blogging and haven’t been doing it for that long, so it’s nice to see a veteran helping out the rookie!
very true about not using your blog as a channel for venting, I find it a turn off and normally don’t return to blogs that carry that dark cloud vibe, thanks for this post and always being sunny!

Great post! Thanks!
thank you for posting these tips! I am a new blogger and find that this is very helpful!!
Great tips, but I somewhat disagree with #3. A couple of weeks or so ago, we saw lots of bloggers say that they wanted to show more of their “true” selves and not the fake perky happy lives that they think that people want to see. We all know that nothing is perfect. While I don’t think it’s great to complain and be overly negative, there’s a fine line there… I would much rather read about a REAL life than a fake one. Just my 2 cents. =)
thank you elsie! how about 5 tips for keeping yourself organised! You are always busy with so many projects – do you ever sleep!? Thanks so much, Che (South Africa)
I don’t think I have ever written on here, but I wanted to let you know you are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing your creativeness and everything else you share!!

dear elsie,
thank you for being a sweet, inspirational heart. i really enjoy reading what you have to say and learning about the things you have to teach. you’re inspiring me to work hard for what i love!

In deed,i’m really fond of your blog.:)
i’m from Taiwan,
i have my own blog too.
sometimes,i make the same mistakes as you said above.
and i’ll think over what the reasons are to make my blog so boring.lol
it worth reading all of your tips,
i really thank you from the bottom of my heart.:)
hi there,
thanks for this, it’s really interesting to read. I have learnt, and continue to learn, lots about blogging and finding ‘my voice’. I felt that I had to choose an ‘angle’ for my blog – art and creativity – otherwise I am sure it would have degenerated into a venting space, that would not have been nice. I blogged off line for a couple of years before I went on -line and I am so glad I did. A lot of what I wrote didn’t sound good.
Lovely space and thanks for sharing your tips and advice 🙂

Great advice! I started my blog last September as a way for me to record my wedding journey. I enjoy writing it so much and even now before the wedding love looking back through my memories

thanx so much Elsie!!!
Great tips!! I feel exactly the same!
as for your suggestions .. they are kind of what i had in mind but never really done them!!!
You are a lot of help!!!
🙂
Thanks so much for sharing. I think these are fabulous tips!
awww thanks soo much for the tips elsie!! i think at first when i started blogging, i was so caught up in making sure to post every day… but really i think it’s more important to have quality posts, even if there a fewer of them!!
Wonderful tips. Good to have these things reinforced from a seasoned blogger. Thanks so much, Elsie! xoxo
I agree with all of these but #3. I don’t like negativity. You’ll find bits and pieces of it on my blog I’m sure. Because we all have bits and pieces of it in our lives. Its what makes us real. When you read my blog you are getting to know me. The real me. Not just my happy fun side that I censor. I liked when you used to write a little more openly back in the day. I know you feel that it was a mistake, but I think it touched more people than not. Just my 2 cents of what I miss about your blog.
your 5 tips posts are my new favorite, they are so helpful! thanks for sharing all your wisdom ;]
Fantastic advice! I think it’s so refreshing to hear that someone who is such a well established blogger as yourself is in favor of promoting other blogs that you personally enjoy. So often, I have enjoyed reading a blog and then seen something in a post they have written or something they have posted on twitter that gives out negative connotations towards other bloggers and I find it so unattractive! I guess this goes along with your theory of keeping it positive, which leads me to another point — I think that when you keep your online persona as positive as possible it often reflects outward in your everyday life. I’ve found blogging to be a great form of personal catharsis for myself on this level and feel like if I can make myself happy through my own blogging, maybe I’ll make someone else out there who’s reading happy, too. 🙂
thanks elsie, great tips! you really have mastered the art of blogging 🙂
Great tips! I’m new to your blog and have learned so much first page. I find your blog fun, full of life, bright and personal. Well done you! Eve

Thank you for this. These are great tips!
Blogging has been a wonderful experience for me so far, but I’m definitely still learning how to manage/balance my limits.

Thanks for these tips. I get a bit conscious about the fact that I feel people would get bored if I blogged about what I do. I’m going to try and embrace some of those tips (but I agree with Kara’s comment a bit about having some negativity at times is healthy).
Love this post…thanks!
Thanks for the advice! 🙂
long-time reader, first time commentor – love your blog!
thank you for some excellent advice – I love these tips 🙂
thank so much for these tips, elsie!
=^ . ^=
Great tips! I’ve been using some time off work to think about my blog and how I can improve it. I’ve started thinking about it as a mini-magazine and it’s helping me come up with some new (and hopefully better)ideas. Thanks!
xo-Terri
Great and true tips, Elsie. I do dig the tip of not venting on your blog. You can let people know other parts of your life in a tasteful way. That’s what I try to do.
Excellent list! I love number 3 because I can think of a few like that- blogs I used to love and now they are just annoying. I don’t want to be like that :p
I also really like the last one- I’m still figuring out what my level of privacy should be. It’s hard because I have family and friends reading and want them to know stuff but then there’s the people I DON’T know that read too and I don’t know where to draw a line… hopefully I’ll figure it out like you have (:
Elsie, I loved this post. Thank you so much for sharing all of your insight! It really got me thinking about where I want to go with my blog, and inspired my most recent post! I’ve been reading your blog since the start (and still flip through my copy of your first book now and then, hehe- it’s one of my faves). It has been fun to watch all the changes and accomplishments you’ve made through the years. It must feel so good to know that you have touched the lives of so many other bloggers! 🙂
Thanks for this tips!
Thank you, this was really useful. I love your lack of sincerity. I am defiantly coming back on your blog, you have won a new follower.

this is awesome, thank you! i’ve just started blogging and it’s pretty easy to work myself into a panic over everything…these tips are really helpful. 🙂
good advice. i’m guilty of number three… and breaking away from that
Thank You, Thank You for this new post series!! I am a HUGE fan of your blog and work, and really appreciate these tips. I recently started blogging and was totally lost, but was encouraged by your last two Tips posts.
Thanks Again!
Wonderful tips! Thanks so much for sharing! Have a lovely merry happy day and love to yoU!
Thanks Elsie for the great post. I find the biggest challenge for me is consistency. I blog on a regular basis and then life gets in the way and I stop which gets me out of the rhythm. I shall give lots of thought to how I can implement #2. Thanks again.
good tips! 🙂
Awesome post. I love ‘ Your blog is not your best friend!”
thanks for your info 🙂
Thank you for the great tips! I’m started with my blog, but it’s more difficult than I thought.
Thanx!
ahh! definitely doing this – so cute!
I just started a blog and I’m really glad i stumbled onto yours! These tips are great and i think you are quite inspiring. Thanks and happy blogging!
I love this, I just started my first blog, and haven’t read a ton of them, so this helps out a ton! Thanks so much for sharing your incite, and I love your page!
Thank you,
Been working on my own blog to get rid of feeling like the only person in South Africa that does crafts my age (23) and due to exams I got slack, this inspired me to get back into the groove of writing 🙂
Thanks! i really enjoy to read your blog; i´m beginner on blogging and this tips serve to me as much! 🙂 Sometimes, i feel that i need to talk about things that some people want to read, but i don´t enjoy to write; i think that your advice about this is very helpful. And conclude that the best way to increase the topics on a blog is inviting a friend for write something that this person enjoy to write.
Thanks again!!

I’m new to blogging (roughly a month in!), and I found this especially helpful. I will definitely keep these in mind! Many thanks!!

Thanks, Elsie! Love the theme ideas. You’ve inspired me 🙂
Elsie,
As someone who started her blog months ago but only recently started really really enjoying the process, your tip sheet is of a huge help to me.
The moment I saw your blog I felt like, I was supposed to find it, all this time I have been floating in a sea of blogs with each one leading me a bit closer to yours.
Love from Toronto, Canada
Good info! Thanks!
Thank you so much for posting these five tips to new bloggers 🙂 To help my own get going, I adapted your regular feature idea and referenced you in my post: http://mollyandaustin.blogspot.com/. I hope that’s all right! Everything here is such an inspiration, thank you for all that you do!

Elsie,
What a great post! I appreciate the ideas and inspiration.
I too agree that an abundance of negativity is difficult to read, I feel refraining from it isn’t quite the right thing to do.
Certainly, the style of the blog the writer decides on and creates can give basic guidelines about what is applicable to share. However, there are many personal/family/lifestyle oriented blogs that do a great disservice to their readers by avoiding topics that are difficult to write as much as to read.
I’m rambling… 🙂
There is a balance that should be embraced where it applies.
<3-ing your style,
Jessie
Thanks Elsie,
I’ve read your blog faithfully for many years now and more than anything it has inspired me to keep making. You always seem so focused and on task, that’s the kind of artistic discipline I envy. I’m often so lost in projects it’s hard to accomplish much, so I decided to start a blog with my partner to help keep us on track– to help us find a creative voice. Anyway, I’m not sure if we’re doing this blogger thing right, sometimes it feels like we’re writing into thin air. I guess it’s really more for us, but it has definitely given us a more productive creative outlet. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
Great blog tips & Your blog is lovely and inspiring! I started a blog a month ago, but deleted it, as I have nothing to post, but after reading these, I may re-make one!! x
Your genuineness radiates from this post. I agree with blogging about what you love, and not for stats. I started my “travel blog” over a year ago when I moved abroad to study in Europe and now it has somewhat evolved into a personal blog about my experiences as an ex(California)pat girl living in Amsterdam. At times I deviate from it though under the influence of blogs I read but thanks for the reminder of staying true to what you love!
I’m happy to have found your blog!!
http://www.GlocalGirl.com
hi. i know your blog from some time now and i love it !
it’very colourfull, you are very beautiful and interesting and i love what you do.
i admire you for opening your own store. it’s one of my dreams too. I’d love to have my own handmade store.
I like blogs and in my stupidity i started a few but i’ve deleted them and started all over again. i’m not really a confident person and i think that’s the reason.
but this last one o started it’s a bit inspired by yours. i mean i want to be less messy and have regular stuff i can post, like things i love or interesting sutff i find on the internet.
and also i want to start communicating with other bloggers and pleople. i’ve been a little shy or maybe just lazy.
so in my last blog :)) i have just 9 posts but i’m planing to make many more and hope i will not delete this one too.
oh! and i got in in your restyle project and hope you’ll like what i’ll post.
so big kisses and hope to became a regular comment giver.
Great tips. I also love your About page and idea with embed code links. You definitely example for many young 🙂 bloggers.

Thank you Elsie for sharing your tips – they are so true! Since I am new to blogging world, I find them very useful. I have just come across your blog, and I must say that I absolutely love it here. The pictures are incredibly colorful and inspiring. What’s more I adore the way you write. Feel invited to visit my blog to see the pics of my works (not necessarily to read because I write in Polish – sorry). Take care 🙂 http://fruttibosco.blogspot.com/
Great tips! I have seen blogs where personal things are being discussed/vented/put out there and I was worried because I knew that was something I wasn’t comfortable doing…makes me feel good to read this to see you only need to do what is comfortable for you 🙂
I just started my own blog just short of a month ago, and I love reading helpful tips like this. One of the things I have been noticing on a number of blogs are theme days, and ever since I incorporated them into my own blog, it has seemed so much less daunting and quite a bit of fun! You blog is an infinite source of inspiration for me, and I look forward to having a wonderful blogging journey.

First, I absolutely love your blog! Very inspiring! I am very new to blogging, and while browsing yours, I came along this post. This is very helpful to me.. great tips!
Thank you for sharing 🙂
Great tips Elsie! I’m new to your blog and still somewhat new to blogging and found these tips very helpful. In all honesty, not trying to throw myself under the bus, but if you were to visit my blog at the moment it might seem a little bland. I do have a few popular columns that readers enjoy, but I haven’t found the real heart and soul of it yet. My blog is also a magazine which I started 8 years ago. It was in print, but I’ve turned it into a blog/magazine. I printed and put it together myself and it was very costly and doing it all by myself was stressful. Paper is on it’s way out, paper magazines are suffering because they are way too expensive. Why spend so much money when you can find all of that information on the web for free. Plus, it would give me a chance to communicate with my readers aka the “heart and soul” of Skylar. It’s not just a fashion magazine, it is about real people and their style, their dreams, their hair and makeup secrets and their stories. It’s about inspiration and inspirational people like you. My mission is to discover people and give them a chance to be models and the chance to express themselves doing what they love. I want to give them a chance to be stars. As much as I love Gabrielle Anwar and Bradley Cooper they are not the ones that inspire me and they are not the stars of Skylar. I don’t have a lot of followers, I’m getting hits, but I want it to be popular so that I will have a better chance of finding the people that Skylar is really all about. So I have some questions…
1. How do I bring more people to it? I am having a free model search to find models and I’m also looking for people to help in the promo department and I’m offering pay for both. I need to get that info to people somehow. Models are a very important part of this. It is a fun, unique and safe Internet based opportunity. No travel involved you get to do it from home. As for models, I’m not looking for professionals or people already signed and it is for all shapes and sizes and all forms of beauty.
2. How do I get sponsors? Any tips you can give on this subject would be helpful.
Thanks,
Sarah

Thank you for this post, Elsie! I just subscribed to your blog feed, even though I have been trying to keep up with you since I found and LOVED your scrapbooking style in a magazine a few years ago and subsequently bought your colorful book. You’re so inspiring!
I’ve just started blogging and am trying to get all the advice I can – I’ve always been a little worried about privacy etc., but these tips are brilliant! Keep up the good work 🙂

These are so helpful, Elsie. I’m not technically a ‘newbie’ to blogging any longer having been doing it almost a year but I don’t feel experienced either so it’s always lovely to come across a handy hint or two with regard to good bloggin’
I’m completely new to A Beautiful Mess, I came across you when a fellow blogger pointed out a few days ago that we share similar blog titles 🙂
Reaaaalllly enjoying your posts,

What great, common sense tips. It’s always nice to have a little reminder of how to stay inspired and focused. Thank you.
Dear Elsie, I have just found your beautiful blog and I am really excited about it. I fully agree with point 3 and in fact with all the points. I think every blogger should follow these points 🙂 Have a nice day, Petra
Thanks for this Elsie 🙂 great tips… love your blog 🙂 <3
This is definitely a late response to this post but I just found your blog. After reading this post I have to say I LOVE YOU! haha I so needed this for inspiration and it was hard for me to figure out what I needed to do mentally before I start a blog. Also after reading your other business-y post, I am even more inspired to get to where you are of owning a business and loving it. Thank you so much! Maybe you can do a guest post on my blog soon 🙂

Thanks Elsie!! Your suggestions were really helpful.
I started my blogged my blog early this year and I’m finally finding my grove. Reading your blog has really helped me invision the potential of it.
Thanks for being amazing inspiration!! Blog on!!
I love these tips. Thank you for inspiring me!
Thanks for your advice!
I am starting a blog right now, after being inspired during my engagement period and teaching myself so many crafts.
I just started with a tumblr, but I am wondering what your favorite blog hosting site is? obviously you like typepad, but are there any other good ones out there?
I am not a huge tumblr fan, but once i get my camera and can really start working on the blog I want to get one I can have total control over!
Thanks!! Now I know what to blog! You are amazing! How do get sponsors?
Thanks for all the lovely tips. I love an inspiring blog 🙂

Hi Elsie,
This is great. I just began blogging and I’m super concious, maybe overly concious of what to blog about, that I’ve definitely lost a bit of momentum. I found your blog on The Wedding Co’s and I’m so grateful for the recommendation. I will be reviewing your tips in further detail. It’s just the cure for my current writer’s block.
The tips here are great! I also took your online course and my whole blogging perspective has changed! Thank you 🙂
hi elsie!
i just want to express my thank you to you because i’ve learned a lot from you! i know we never met each other but i just feel the connection when i read your blog (actually i bumped into your blog as i was searching on how to make a messy bun!). i had a blog, before, but then i decided to shut it down. many of my friends said that they love my blog but i think i was sharing a little bit too much about my personal life, especially about my lovelife. and so, right now, i’m starting a new blog because i can’t seem to leave my passion for writing.
and again, thank you!
hugs and kisses from KL, Malaysia.
your fan <3
Better late then never. So glad to have found your blog. I seriously love the look of it. A friend and I are trying to get our blogs rolling and slowly pick up steam. Thanks for sharing your tips. Ever bit helps.
I actually disagree with number three. While I don’t want to read a blog that’s a consistent downer, I’m so tired of “inspirational” blogs that present perfect, fairy-tale lives that are impossible to achieve; it’s these blogs that send so many bloggers into Internet-inspired competition with themselves & with others, struggling to achieve the perfect lives they read about on pretty blogs. We’re people, not magazines; we’re real, not contrived. Bloggers who seem to be putting up a pretty, perfect facade are not my cup of tea – I’d rather hear from real people with real feelings, even if that sometimes mean a bummer of a post.
Thanks! 🙂 I’ve been blogging for less than one month, so I’m sure these tips will be very usefull for me!

I don’t quite remember if I commented already but I felt the need to read this again and take a few notes on my new tiny blog notepad.
I feel so much more at ease reading this, I feel like I can take it all in now. I have so many ideas for my blog and I have to tell you, you’re my first big inspiration. This balance you’re talking about is just the same I need.
I remember my first blog, I was so young and complained all the time (also I’m French, that explains why 😉 and just reading the posts makes me want to slap myself and to tell my young self to wake up and look around! Ha! I’m so happy I’ve changed in a good way (I do hope so!).
Elsie, thank you so much for all the inspiration and the love and the creativity. You’re by far the most inspiring blogger I “know”.
Loved reading this! Thank you so much! 🙂
Thanks, I find your tips great
This is a useful post – thank you! I’ve been blogging for about 2 years, but don’t have many visitors! While I visit – and enjoy! – loads of blogs I rarely leave a comment, as I don’t know what to say…but maybe more people would visit me if I commented!
I shall come back to visit you, I’m sure.
Hi Elsie! Great tips!
I do agree with eveything you’ve written here. I think that balance between private and public is important, and avoid negativity.
I’m new at blogging, I’ve been working on my new blog for less than a month, but I love it already… I have many ideas dancing in my head all day long and I’m enjoying the process.
Love your blog too, is one of my top readings.
Great tips! Thank you! I recently discovered you. Love your blog!!
So cute! I already like you on FB and also get your posts on Google Reader. 🙂
those were helpful tips. thanks. you seem like a very nice – and balanced – person. take care! nice blog.
I realy loved, its helping a lot!
Thanks, it’s so nice when someone think like you, and share!
thanks!
Wow, this is really helpful! Especially the part about making a blog you’d love to read! I think I just keep copy-pasting ideas/inspirations because other bloggers do it, and that makes it okay. However, I’m definitely going to do my own version of the ’10 things I love’, Fun Stuff Fridays! 😀
Thank you for the ideas, I’m going to keep studying up on making my blog a masterpiece!
Thank you for this useful post. I linked it here on my blog 🙂

Thanks for the tips and advice!! I am a senior in college and started my blog about a year ago…kind of a way to organize my article. Now everyday I put effort into my blog making it visually better and interesting to read. I think it is important to trust your instincts and stay true to who you are when you blog! I love when people(like you) have a distinct voice in their writing and their pictures are unique!

Aside from these, blogging can also be a source of income. So for a website to look more appealing, bloggers must upload fun and interactive blog posts for their new and ever-loyal readers.
i know this is an older post, but i still wanted to thank you for it! i recently started blogging after finding your amazing little place over here and getting extremely inpsired by all the wonderful blog entries. i hope to make something just half as great as abeautifulmess and am looking forward to discovering more of the blogging community!

Thank you for this!! I’ve been trying to get into blogging for about two years now, but was struggling with the content. Finally I found something to write about and can’t wait to develop my blog further!
Aside from expressing your feelings, blogging can also be a great way of showing your gifts and talents to other people. Like for example, if you’re good in sewing or painting, you can post ’em on your blog, so people can appreciate your craft.
thanks for the heads up! as soon as i get a little birthday money, i’m spending it on a couple of your e-classes… i think i could really benefit from your advice/perspective/experiences.

Great advice! Thank you for sharing.
I realize that you probably posted this some time ago but I just recently came across your blog and this post. It is very timely advice as my husband and I have just started a blog.
We are very excited about the possibilities but also weary of finding a balance between sharing our passions whilst maintaining some privacy.
I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog! I regularly check for your updates on this site and Instagram. Your fun, positive attitude and DIY project posts are like a breath of fresh air!

Hi, just wanted to let you know that I come to your site fairly regularly, and I do appreciate your post.
Tell me, please. In my blog I hide my real person, i don’t want my familiars have the opportunity find me here. I made this blogg to find new friends, to have the opportunity to share my thought with other people. Is it right?
to note: iI live in Ukraine, I speak russian, but I want my blogg be internationalб so i do it in english, but it is no so good and limits my ability to write.
…What can you recomend me?
I’m just exploring your blog and find this article you wrote. thank you so much, I’m newbie in blogging and it really helps
this is my favourite blog post!!
“Why is your blog so popular?” thats a very silly question haha! It’s popular because it’s beautiful, inspiring, motiviating, fun and amazing… it’s exactly like a favourite magazine… thanks so much x
Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. I was just listening to you today on the latest PRT so immediately hopped over to see what you had to say about blogging. Love it! So simple yet it can get lost in all that is available and “expected”. I started a personal blog in the Fall of 2009 and last year started another one to showcase and promote my Stampin’ Up! creations. I have found that it is next to impossible to stay current with both blogs AND find time to create projects to promote on the blogs. My focus this year has shifted to scrapbooking so most of my posts (on both blogs) are in that vein but my family (the main reason I started the blog in the first place) have no interest so rarely visit. Anyway, now I’m just starting to ramble and whinge so I’ll sign off.
Thanks again. You’ve renewed my soul to keep up with these blogs and given me ideas of how to grow them.
This was very helpful! I’m a new blogger and Im still trying to develop my voice. Great tips and I love your blog!

Elsie,
I wish I had read this post months ago when I was required to start a blog for one of my classes. What should have been fun turned out to feel like a chore to me and I ended up really falling behind in posting. In the end I figured out that I was not cut out for the type of blogging that I was working with and that I had chosen something that, yes, I knew a lot about but I honestly didn’t enjoy. Had I seen these tips in advance I believe that my experience with blogging would have been completely different.
thnk u so much…this actually really helped
this is an awesome post, as I’m new to blogging it is good to get some inside tips from a blogger who has being writing for a number of years now. Thanks for sharing your tips :).

These are great suggestions. I started my blog about a year ago doing reviews of various beauty products (I’m a little bit obsessed, ha), but then it turned into my own company; an all-natural beauty product company to be exact! I’m still at the beginning phases and am working on putting myself out there, and this advice is excellent! Thanks, Elsie.
These are some great tips! Thanks!
Iv been doing research about starting a blog and this have been one of the most useful posts about it!
THanks sooo much!

Elsie, you obviously do not jealously guard your bloggers secrets and thank you for that. Sharing is also giving value to your own work while helping others.
You are a point of reference for many individuals and new bloggers like me from Paris.
So thank you, Fi xxx
Hi! I just discovered your blog via a link a friend posted on Pinterest (love love love that site!)
I’m starting a new blog, and I just wanted to say that I love these tips. They’re awesome pointers, and really gave me something to think about, so thank you!
I was scrolling through your blog as I do every day 🙂 and I saw this post. I just recently started my own blog and I am loving it. Your 5 tips have helped and make me feel more confident. Thank you! And as always great job on your blog!
That’s very kind! Thank you!
Now I’ve just realised that I do write too much in my blog, when the thing of it is photography, music and design! It is so silly that I haven’t realised till now, thank you very much!
I’ve just discover your blog, and I love it! it inspires me so much, I feel I’m not very different from you: love fashion, photography, chocolate and sweets, I’m crazy over vintage clothes and objects…. so happy I found you!
Have a nice weekend!
Kisses from Spain 🙂

Hi! I read blogs that look good and have great pictures and this is one of them. Congratulations & thanks on the tips.

Hi Elsie,
Just wanted to let you know that your blog is amazing. If possible can you take a look at my blog and let me know your insight of it. http://ladypind.blogspot.com/ Would greatly appreciate it.
I just love reading your blogs, this one is my favorite so far, and I’m new to blogging as well. Although I find postings a bit intimidating, I do love to write. Your blogs gives me an inspirations on learning in general. Thanks, and I look forward to all further blogs I will be reading from your site.
Thanks for the awesome tips! I recently started a blog so these will be a huge help 🙂
Very helpful.I love the idea of regular features. I just started blogging about a month ago and it has been fun to see when I am in the “zone” writing a post and when it feels like more work. I feel like I am starting to understand my own interests more just from blogging! Thanks for your helpful post. FYI – In case you were wondering, someone put a link to this post in a comment section of a blog that was “Freshly Pressed” at wordpress which got 500+ comments, so you may be getting some traffic! 🙂 Thanks again for your thoughtful post.
Good tips! Thanks. I started a crafts blog a few months ago. Check it out!

Thank you for writing this, it is a HUGE help!! Im a new blogger, though my blog is more of a family blog. I just have a question about blogging etiquette when it comes to Pinterest and DIY.
Do I have to ask for permission to post a DIY that Ive pinned or have seen from another Blogger?
Thanks for any response or advice you can give,
Diana
P.S I forgot to say that I LOVE A Beautiful Mess, so inspiring!!
I just happened to find your blog through a google search. This post is what I needed! I’m a new blogger and have had writers block for some time. It’s now the time for me to simply write about what I love, and not put pressure on myself. Thank you for being a blogging inspiration!

I mentioned you in a blog post today. I simply talk about how I need to follow my instincts while writing, and I am currently thinking of something I can start as a reoccurring feature. You’re a wonderful inspiration!

Thank you for this Elsie – your post is super helpful for a beginner (wedding) blogger like me. I’m going to try starting a regular feature for the weekend or Monday mornings and put together a list of what keeps me coming back to the blogs that I love, one of which is yours of course!
Love, Ren from soprettywasshe.com
P.S. Love love love your blog posts about your wedding, it looks like it was the most perfect day
Thank you for the tips… blessings~barb
These are some wonderful tips! I like what you said about pretending you are writing a monthly magazine and then put in articles that I, myself, would love to read. That’s a great way of looking it! I’m going to try that. 🙂
great advise…thank you…
I just opened my blog 2 months ago…
🙂

These are very sound and practical tips – great for first-time bloggers. Thanks!
I’ve recently made my blog private due to “referer spam” and their associated Trojans. It made me feel very uneasy.
I just re-read this page again today and it was just what I needed!
I’ve been loving your blog for the past year and I have learned a lot, the carefulness and time you put into each post makes such a big difference, every photo is beautiful! So far your’s and Emma’s blogs are the only ones that I have loved long enough to actually put your buttons on my blog.
Thanks for all the inspiration! I feel I shall be signing up for the blog love e-course rather soon!
xo, Taylor.

Thanks so much for the tip Elsie! 🙂 Me and a couple of my friends have been blogging for the past two months and we’ll keep in mind these tips! Hope you can visit our little blog. 🙂 Don’t stop blogging! You’re just awesome! <3
These are really great tips. I agree with #3. I unfortunately came across a blog where the author was showcasing her chronic depression in a very open way. It scared me. I couldn’t believe the amount of negativity radiating off of that blog. There’s a very fine line between sharing your life and sharing too much. She obviously needed help from the people closest to her. Venting to strangers wasn’t going to help.
But anyway – thanks for the amazing advice. I will definitely keep it in mind as I expand my own blog. (:
Thanks Elsie! I have wanted to start a blog, but without a particular project (such as cooking through Julia Child’s famous cookbook) I was not sure how to organize it, or how to choose what and what not to write about. Now I have a base to work with. Thanks again.
Thank you for these nice tips!
These tips were all reassuring, as this is what I already do now. The biggest part is that I try to maintain that boundary between my private life and what I put in my blog.
Thanks again!

Thanks so much for this! I just started my own blog this week and I keep re-reading your post, just for suggestions 🙂
Awesome tips! I’ve been following you on Bloglovin for some time, but have recently added you to my Google Reader. Let me tell you…I am ADDICTED to your blog! Hehe, I’m not a stalker, I promise! Your blog has been so inspirational, and everyday I learn something new. I’m taking these tips, doing more research, and hope to start a blog soon! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for the tips. Just getting going in the blogging world and I love the advise you gave. Especially about making boundaries and having special weekly or monthly features that you are passionate about. Thanks for taking the time to write this!

I just love that blog! these tips are really helpful! (I sometimes would like to start my own blog.. but time lacks 🙁 so I keep reading, and getting inspired!)
I like your new posts “TODAY IS”
I just found your blog on StumbleUpon and love it! I’m just getting into DIY and crafts, especially with my kids.
This is a great post. I agree a blog shouldn’t be a place to vent, but at the same time should include topics that you love. Sometimes I feel like I talk about too many vast things from green parenting to books I love – but those are the things I love. So hopefully I’m doing the right thing.
Beautiful! wonderful tips thank you!
Great tips. I read your other post with Kinsey as well. I am having a hard time getting into a routine with my blog. I also needed to clarify my intentions and your post helped me do that. I need to become more computer savvy in terms of blog design and using certain tools. I currently use blogger. Do you have any advice for technically challenged individuals like myself?
These are really great tips Elsie. I could not agree more with you 🙂
This post still rings true. I finally decided to start my own blog after subscribing to so many great ones though out the years. Both you and Rachel have been great influences.
Very good and sensible suggestions!
thanks ,very nice tips 🙂
i am so glad a friend gave me the link to “a beautiful mess” it is such an inspiring site! this post is so helpful to me.. i have just started out blogging and sometimes i wonder things like “is anyone even reading this?”.. “is what i write interesting to other people?”.. i think as long as we are having fun doing what we are doing then thats what matters! thanks so much for the tips i am learning new things everyday 🙂 carly x
Thanks alot. This blog is very helpful. I have a hard time staying on track or thinking of things to say in my blog. I like what I put but needs more descriptions/wording. Here is a my blog site. If you would like feel free to check it out and give comments or suggestions! Again thanks for the “5 tips”! Briana
Thank you this post was very helpful. I am a new blogger and I will keep your 5 tips in mind.
As a newbie blogger, this is really helpful– thank you! Just stumbled upon your blog and love it, love it, love it. My One Big Goal is to promote beautiful fashion that is kind to earth and the people who live here, and I really appreciate the reminder to stay true to my focus and to keep creating quality content. DIY is a big part of being green and you guys are clearly masters. I am signing up to follow right now 🙂

Thank You I have read this a couple times and finally getting up the courage to make a comment. I am a new blogger and just want to start it to see how I like it. I am a very creative person and like doing that kind of stuff in my free time. I am currently a nursing student but I still want my creative side to thrive. Plus to see if this is more something i would like to do! Do more blogger advice! Possibly a “how to make your blog look cute” article?

Hey, Elsie! Just wanted to thank you for all your great tips for bloggers — I even took your e-course on blogging! It really helped and inspired me — got me off to a good start, I think.
By the way, I love the new look of your blog (2012) — very clean and cool and modern looking. Although, I do miss, a little bit, the funky style you had before. But, hey, change is good — and it looks great!
Our blogs are very different — our subjects and readership — but thanks for the inspiration!!

Thanks for the advice! I’ve just started blogging and I think I’ll be revisiting these tips often to make sure I keep on the right tracks 🙂
This is excellent advice! I started my DIY home renovation blog recently, and I will follow your words of wisdome. Thanks!
How to do build websites like this? Please send me links to good Website Builders ? 😮
Great advice. I’m going to bookmark this page for reference. 🙂
This is the 1st time I have been to stumbleupon and here you are. What great, positive advice! Wow, this was written 2 years ago!
I need to upgrade my blog. Declutter and shorten every single post. I write way too long and it’s completely scattered.
I’ve got lots of regulars reading my posts that never comment, but the ones I know personally tell me and then I get sweet emails. I guess stuff like anxiety about an upcoming colonoscopy is not something a normal person would like to leave their stamp with a comment.
I confess, I whine. So I want to thank you for your post. I hope to remember your 5 great tips and write more often so my posts go on forever. I got tripped right-off at the right spot and fell at your blog. : )
WOW!!!!!!! I just started blogging 2 months ago and have come across so many beautiful and wonderful blogs. Yours is A-MAZING!!! I love it!!! Thanks so much for sharing your tips, knowledge, talent and life!!!
I hope my blog becomes a place where people will want to come to daily xxDani
I have been nervous about responding to a blog. Didn’t know where to start or what to say. I was visiting your blog when I came across your new readers section. You kinda brought it home and took the fear factor out. Thanks for the tips. You got me started.

I love this! Thanks so much for this post!
