I subscribe to a lot of cooking magazines. Duh. I absolutely love cooking, eating and food photography. I am always up for trying something new and in this past month's edition of Everyday with Rachel Ray there was this drink called a Broadway that I had never heard of before. I got online to do a bit more research and sure enough, the internet agrees, a Broadway is a mixed beer drink. Yep, mixed beer. Different, huh? The basic idea is that you mix cola and beer together. If this conjures up images of pouring a Mickey's into a tall glass of Mount Dew, well, just stop right there. (!!!!!) It can actually be quite refreshing, think ginger ale added to a rich amber beer.I decided to try it out. I wanted to make something a little seasonal, so I created a simple cranberry soda to pair with my beer. Here's how:
In a pot boil together 1 cup water, 3/4 cup sugar and 1 cup chopped cranberries for 5-6 minutes. Be sure to stir so the sugar dissolves. Strain out the cranberry pieces and combine this syrup with club soda. You can adjust how much based on how sweet you want your drink. Then combine with beer.Just something different. I sort of loved how foamy this was. I also tried the cranberry soda on its own and that was really fun too. I always love cranberries in the fall. Try something new this weekend! xo. Emma

That is actually really sweet, that you haven’t heard about this in the US.
Mixxed beer Drinks are really popular in Europe, especially in Germany and Austria.
The Classic Mix is Sprite + Beer, very refreshing and sweet.
My favorite is Ginger Ale and Beer.
this sounds so delicious! and a really great idea for the season! i have never heard of that either, thank you for sharing <3

Nice! in Spain we have “clara”, which is beer with a little bit of lemon Fanta. it’s very refreshing! π
That looks delicious! And I love the black and white straw with the red as a great visual for a food photo! π

Froken Hieke-Yes, that’s what I read. That is it very popular in Europe and Japan. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on an American bar menu. But it could be the area of the country I live in. Who knows? At any rate, it’s fun learning about new things. I think sprite + beer sounds right up my alley. π
This looks great! I also love cooking magazines.

I’ve got a similar recipe that I use EVERY yr!
-1can frozen limeade in pitcher
-fill can with cranberry juice and pour in pitcher
-fill can with Tequila and pour in
-pour in 1 12oz beer
-mix well and refrigerate
-pour into tumblers filled with frozen cranberries
I love how you “sort of loved” this! It’s clearly related to the shandy they drink on the British Isles (beer mixed with lemon soda). I don’t really like the taste of cola, but I find a good shandy can be great, and I bet this cranberry mixture can too. Thanks for the autumny take on it! Hugs from a Norwegian in Paris!
Ooh, it sounds delicious, and something a bit different too.
i love a drink called a red ho, which is hoegaarden with a few oz. of cherry lambic added. so yummy!!
Yummy!! This is such a classy mixed drink, I can only imagine how wonderful it tastes!
Time Stand Still
in austria we call that a “radler” it’s just any juice mixed with beer:) love it!
I totally adore your idea!
This sounds strangely appealing, perhaps because you’re not mixing too much in with the beer. I would try it but cranberries would be impossible to find here in Brazil!

That’s awesome, it reminds me of the panache’ I used to have in Paris, to which the barman would add Grenadine syrup: delish!
This looks well good! I love all the mixed beer/wine drinks they have in Germany and Austria, so it’s cool to see Americans doing something similar! I’m not industrious enough to make my own soda, but I’m definitely going to try mixing beer with store-bought soda now and see how it goes! Thanks for the idea! x
Actually we do this all the time in Germany (as the girl from Austria just mentioned it). There are tons of drinks that consists of soda and beer, like Alster or Radler or Diesel (Coke and Beer). Just try it, it’s actually nice in the summer.
I just made candied apple soda from the basics of your syrup recipe!….and then I put bourbon in it. Haha thank you for the inspiration!

Mixed beer drinks are just about my favorite thing ever! We’ve been drinking PBSGs for years – a little St. Germain, a little grapefruit juice, and some PBR. Sounds strange but it’s great! Can’t wait to try a Broadway π
mmm sounds really good. I enjoy beer and find it interesting to try something different with it.

We have all sorts of mixed beer here in Germany and we love it π It’s really nice!
It’s very similar to a UK shandy – same idea; 1/2 beer, 1/2 lemonade but it’s very refreshing. This sounds scrumptious, and you can get away with it being a BIT healthy with the cranberries, though it may be pushing it a bit!
Yummy! You should try a Chelada! They are simply delicious :).
I really like this idea; I’m not the biggest beer fan but I’m sure it would taste amazing with cranberries soda π
This looks yummy! Someone was telling me about something called a beermosa. Beer and Oj, who knew!?

Another great beer mixer is a Monaco, beer, grenadine and 7 Up. I don’t really like how bitter beer can be, so this is a perfect drink for me!
I love a beer cocktail – they are so delish!

Looks delicious and refreshing and like you, I like to try new, seasonal drinks to ring in this time of year! Thanks for sharing. π
I always thought the idea of beer mixed with anything was FOUL…then I had a homemade shandy. Then I realized that I love beer + Clamato (my family calls it a “red beer”). So when you really get down to brass tacks, beer + things = delicious! Gonna try this π
Ohhhh this looks so delicious!

Emma!! Your drinks always look great & tasty…problem is, I don’t drink alcohol. Is there a way you could give a non alcohol version too with your recipes? Thanks!
sounds amazing! the hubby and i just tried a new restaurant and i ordered a mixed beer beverage- champagne mixed with porter. it sounds strange but it was delicious. i can’t i wait to try this cocktail π
i love a good shandy… it’s the only way i will consume PBR!!
Yum, very festive AND something the boys will drink even though it looks girly!!

hey,
in Germany it’s nothing special to mix cola and beer. there are also variations with lime juice or lemonade (then called “radler”). some guys even mix their beer with banana juice. but that is not everyones taste. π
many greetings from Germany,
Eva
In Bavaria, Germany, they call Sprite and Beer a radler. And if it’s wheat beer, it’s a Russe (russian)… very good!

Yum! Sounds delish.
In Australia we have a “shandy”, which is an almost-full glass of beer topped off with a dash of lemonade (ie. Sprite, 7-Up – not Lemon Squash). It’s a bit of an old-lady drink and I LOVE them! And yes, does make me think of my Nan. I love to drink shandies at Barefoot Bowls in summer π
