Hope you are in the mood for a chocolaty treat today because I’ve got just the thing to warm you right up! If you’ve ever needed an easy homemade hot chocolate recipe, then look no further.
I also had the great pleasure to work with Tim Tam biscuits on this post—two exciting things about that. First, their delicious chocolaty wafer biscuits (called biscuits, not cookies because they are from Australia, guys) go perfectly with this recipe as the crunchy wafer insides are amazing next to the rich and creamy hot chocolate. And the second thing, Tim Tam biscuits are fully launching in the United States (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). So if you are US based, like me, and have had these while traveling and wished you could buy them at home—well, you’re in luck. The four flavors available are Original, Classic Dark, Dark Mint and Chewy Caramel. Hooray!
For this hot chocolate recipe, we are going to use three different chocolates, but I’ve also got a few quick notes at the end of this post regarding substitution ideas in case you are looking to swap things around. But first, here’s my super simple and delicious recipe for homemade hot chocolate.
Triple (Hot) Chocolate, serves two
2 cups whole milk
1 cup half and half cream
1 oz. dark chocolate
1 oz. milk chocolate
1 oz. white chocolate
1/4 teaspoon espresso powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
marshmallows for serving
In a medium pot combine the milk, cream, and extract. Cook over medium/high heat until hot (about 3-4 minutes).
Add the chopped chocolate and espresso powder and whisk well until the chocolate fully melts into the milk mixture. Pour into mugs and top with marshmallows.
I told you it was simple—you’re only about 6-8 minutes away from a cup of homemade hot chocolate! Here’s a couple notes:
-You can use all one type of chocolate if you prefer or if that’s what you have on hand, just use 3 oz. total.
-You can swap out the vanilla extract for other extracts to include flavors you prefer like hazelnut, almond, or even other flavors like cherry or banana.
-Bonus points if you make your own homemade marshmallows to go along with this hot chocolate recipe!
So get your cozy socks on, queue up your favorite Netflix show, and make this hot chocolate to serve with Tim Tam biscuits soon. You won’t regret it. 🙂 xo. Emma

In Australia you use them as a straw! You bite off each end then dip one end in a hot drink then suck till the drink make its way up to your mouth! The heat me melts the inside of the biscuit and it goes all gooey then you pop the rest in your mouth, soooo good
I just realized I haven’t had a mug of hot chocolate all winter. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. This looks amazing and so do those biscuits, soooo thinking I’m going to need to remedy this situation asap.

Sarah I was about to write the same thing haha!! How good are Tim Tam straws!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They’re also good for drinking creamy cocktails too like a lovely kahlua *wink wink*
My brother in law recently moved to the US and is super excited he can now pick these up.

As soon as I saw this post I was going to say the same thing!! It’s the best way to enjoy a Tim Tam. Hope you guys in the US love them too!
I’m really craving for this now! Even though it’s 11 in the evening in Belgium now 😉
I want this.
Tim Tams in the US?! Your ad worked; I’m so excited hahaha!!! I grew up in Dubai with a lot of international friends and the magic of a Tim Tam ‘slam’ was one of our favorite things, as well as then introducing our other American friends to it. Yum. So many fun memories too (and falling apart Tim Tams from not eating it fast enough after using the coffee or milk)!
For some reason using banana extract in a hot chocolate sounds awful, even though bananas and chocolate are super yummy together. Totally trying this with a bit of orange!
This looks amazing! I need this in my life!

A good hot chocolate always has marshmallows on top 🙂
Oh this must be sooo good, the combination and the espresso powder. Have to try it this weekend.
How exciting to see the Aussie Tim Tam featured here on one of my fave blogs. PS: they are biscuit (cookie) not wafer. I’m guessing you haven’t actually tried one. Oops.
Tim Tam Double Coat (hopefully they reach you mob soon) eaten straight out of the freezer in summer. ?
Tim Tam Slam ’em!
Those biscuits seem delicious! I wish we had them here in Portugal… And it’s a great recipe, it looks delicious.
OMG! This looks so good! I am on a huge hot chocolate kick right now since I am not drinking coffee. Nothing like something warm and sweet to relax with before starting my day. I’ve never tried hot chocolate from scratch!
WHAT???? You use TimTams as a straw?! That’s amazing! I am doing this later today for sure!

Choccy biccies?! That’s too cute, also my spell check just went crazy because it didn’t recognize either of these. 🙂
I am just dying to visit Australia some day—I hope I get to. Just seems so cool!

It’s VERY easy and so tasty. 🙂

Told you it was exciting news. 🙂
Also, you grew up in Dubai? How cool! I know very little, mostly just seeing it some in movies. But it looks amazing. Another place I hope I get lucky enough to visit some day.
-Emma
Oh trust me, I’ve tried MANY. I think you would judge me if you knew just how many I “tried.”
🙂

WOW! This looks amazing! A friend always adds a little cayenne pepper to her homemade hot chocolate… I like it better without but I do keep a little on hand for her. I will making this over the weekend for sure!
When you say “espresso powder” do you mean like instant espresso, or coffee grounds?
This looks absolutely delicious!
Also, I have those hedgehog measuring cups, too! I got them for a gift a few years ago. Sadly two of them broke during a move.
Gold spoons! Where to buy???
No matter what time it is, I always tend to crave for chocolates whenever I see one. Gotta get my hands on these babies soon. ?

In our home we also just call them “timmies”- not sure this is common though. In Aus we tend to shorten or change many words, usually so that they sound more casual.
Before you travel to Aus you could put up a post asking for suggestions- I’m sure your many readers over here would be happy to give you guys some travel tips! 🙂
I didn’t realize these were hard to find in the US. Our grocery stores have stocked them since I was in college, good to know they’ll be available for everyone. And I think I was the same to come here and say Tim Tam Slams are where it’s at! That’s the only reason I’ve ever bought them! 🙂
I’m OBSESSED with Tim Tam biscuits and really hope we get them here in the U.K. soon too as I’m ever so keen to try your original recipe! x
Holy delicious. This is exactly what I need after a long day of doing human adult things!! Can’t wait cozy up with a cup of this stuff!
Tim Tams have been available in the US (at Target stores) for some time now…but I am happy to see more flavours arrive in stores – particularly the dark choc mint. Definitely made this Aussie girl living in the U.S very happy!
These mugs are so adorable, I love the handle on them. Will definitely be trying this soon!
