Lately I've been in the mood to refresh our home. It sort of feels like I'm always tweaking little things, like adding another framed photo here or replacing a torn thrown pillow there. You know, little stuff. Since I "finished" decorating most of my home while we were writing Happy Handmade Home (about two years ago), I really haven't made any big changes since. As you can probably guess, I love home decor, like, a lot. And lately I've just gotten the bug again. But, I didn't want to spend a lot of money or get rid of any major pieces as I really liked everything we already had. So instead, I decided to try and find ways to refresh our space without giving the rooms a total makeover. This month I focused on our bedroom. If you want to see what our bedroom looked like before, you can see our room tour here.
If you're thinking about refreshing your bedroom or other space this season, here's a few things to try:
1. Rearrange your furniture and rugs.
Giving our room a different layout really made the space feel totally different. Of course you have to be mindful of doorways, furniture lengths, and other considerations. But, armed with a measuring tape, I bet you can find a way to change up your space and maybe even make it more functional.
One thing we changed that made the room feel totally different was repurposing our pallet headboard into a bed frame. To be honest, this was partially by accident. I wanted to change the headboard because it's just such a large, bulky feature in the room that it draws a lot of attention. So I knew that changing it would make a big difference. I didn't really want to get rid of it though—but how do you store a giant wood headboard? I measured, and it turned out to be the perfect fit for a bed frame. Go figure! Pallets are built to hold a lot of weight too, so I didn't even need to reinforce it. I just moved it from the wall to the floor.
This is what the pallet headboard looked like before.
Now it sits under our bed, elevating it. I'm thinking about using the space underneath to store magazines or shoes or something. We'll see.
3. Move items to different rooms/spaces.
Like I mentioned before, I'm still in love with pretty much every piece in our home. So instead of getting rid of items or buying/making new ones, I simply moved some things to other rooms. I moved the wicker chair from the corner to our guest bedroom (I *might* put it in the living room someday though, we'll see). And I moved the record player and cabinet from the living room to the bedroom. You could also move curtains or a rug from one room to another. Just small little changes like this don't cost a dime but can make your space feel so different.
I tend to collect clutter as time goes on…like magazines I don't store or toss, or little rocks I'll pick up on vacations but then never really do anything with, so they just sit around on dressers or nightstands for months at a time. When you refresh a space, this is a great time to declutter. This might not mean throwing anything away, just finding the right home for it in your space. If you've been meaning to store all those old movie ticket stubs in a photo album but never have, now is the time. I think of this as deep cleaning. It makes any space feel more spacious, and it makes it easier to just do a little light cleaning now and again to keep it looking this way longer. I like light cleaning, I can live with that. 🙂
For me, refreshing our entire bedroom only took one long Saturday afternoon, and I love the difference it's made! Our room feels more like an open, blank slate which I'm loving right now. Anyway, thanks for letting me share, and if you've been feeling a little stuck in a decor rut lately, you might try refreshing your space. Do it, do it. 🙂 xo. Emma

I live in a Tiny One Bedroom apartment and you are so right that by just rearranging the stuff you already have it makes the space feel fresh again. Last week I switched the rugs from the living room and bedroom and moved our couch and instantly felt like whole new space. Great way to ward off the winter doldrums with a fresh new space. -megan
P.S. That succulent dresser is my favorite thing ever!
Looks gorgeous http://www.hannamarielei.com
It’s always so nice to refresh your space in little ways. You did such a good job. I love what you’ve done with the room in general. I’m actually obsessed with palette headboards my boyfriend is in the process of making us a smaller one, but repurposing it into a bed frame was a great idea. It looks awesome.

This is great advice! I love de-cluttering on the regular, it’s so satisfying to get rid of stuff! I need to try and move my furniture around, I underestimate how great that can be.

I went back to your room tour to find out where the hanging lamps are from, and sadly I see they are vintage. However… would there be any way to either: 1. get some close up shots and/or 2. an AMB tutorial on a similar style? This looks exactly like the type of project I would love to try to either figure out myself or follow along with you guys!!
Your home is just beautiful! I love your pallet headboard/bedframe, and really love your bedside tables and golden wallpaper! Just gorgeous, what a lovely space 🙂

Emma, what a smart idea! I know it seems simple enough, but with IKEA and Target so close to where I live, I always default to spending cash when I’m in the mood to change a room. HOWEVER… Like you, I also love the things I have, am on a budget and hate spending money on ‘disposable’ furniture, so I honestly just ‘deal’ with tired, uninspiring spaces… waiting and hoping to like them again. Thanks for the inspiration to look at things a little differently before going shopping! I’m DOING IT tomorrow! And I can’t wait to see the refreshes you do in the rest of your home 🙂
Your room looks amazing- so fresh and airy! The hyperlink to your old bedroom post isn’t working, though 🙁
Awesome tips! That wallpaper is everything! Love the dresser and nightstand too!
Can you come decorate my space? I love how everything looks vintage and goes perfectly together. I just don’t have the patience to go to all the thrift stores to find the perfect things. It would be easier to start by finding one perfect piece and then slowly building up my collection.

Such great tips to “shop your house” to refresh it. It is something I love to do each season…I only wish my living room would be able to handle different furniture configurations!
I really love quirky home inspiration like this! I adore that chest of drawers. Far too pretty x

this post has such perfect timing. we moved into our first home in May and just sort of made the house look good as quickly as we could. I just got the bug to reallyyyy start putting it together the way that feels more like “us”. Like you, I like all our things but just need to figure it out to refresh it a bit. thanks for the added inspiration!
Great tips and pictures!! I absolutely loved this post! Thank you SO much!

I have such an oddly shaped bedroom and the way my bed sits in it right now makes it feel even more strange. I’m in the process of decluttering as well because I’m a hoarder, I admit this. That’s the first step. LoL You ladies have inspired me as I prepare to go on my own declutter/rearrange tour of my home. Hopefully my mess will turn into a beautiful one as yours did. 😀
Great post! I do this type of thing about 4x a year, not planned but driven by boredom in my space! However mine is more moving things around in the same room. What I really liked was the specific info on what you moved, I don’t generally think of the rugs or even moving major pieces and repurposing them. Thank you!
I love that white and gold rose wallpaper! These are great inspirations and tips. Thank you!

I love the use of white in this room. It looks so clean and bright! I’ve been thinking about re-doing our living room and changing the walls from their dark maroon color to bright white, but I’ve been dragging my feet because we have a beautiful (and old and somewhat grungy) rock chimney on an old fireplace that we’ve put a glass-fronted soap-stone wood stove in front of…I was afraid the white would be too stark against this softer (and unmoveable) feature in our tiny living room. But, after seeing how nicely your colors go together in your bedroom against the white, I just might try it!
Thanks for the inspiration!
So pretty! Where did you find your nightstand tables??
Wow! I love this. I may or may not be moving in with you soon. Ha! 🙂
Great space!!!!! I absolutely love the floors! Where are they from?
Your pug is a cutie, I too am a pug owner, I can’t resist that funny face 🙂

Where is that beautiful bedside lamp from?? It looks like it might be vintage? Anyway, that lamp alone was enough to spawn some serious creativity for me this morning! Thank you for sharing your refreshed bedroom!

WOW! WONDERFUL INTERIOR <3
You know, I’ve always thought the string one would make a great DIY. Just haven’t gotten around to trying something like that out. The other one is made of a hard plastic and I’m not sure what material could be used to try and create something similar yourself. That one stumps me. It’s also extremely fragile, like if it fell even from two inches off the ground it would likely break/shatter.
-Emma
Yes, thrifting and flea market shopping certainly take time. But, that’s sort of the fun part (that and things can often be a great deal too!). Start slow and grow, just know you’re looking to collect things you’ll want to keep forever so it’s ok if you don’t find something every time. 🙂
-Emma
It’s vintage. It’s something I kept from our local vintage shop before we closed it. Reminds me of that era of our lives. 🙂

It’s from Oana Befort. She’s amazing! Check out her Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/oanabefort

I think the floors are just from Lowe’s. I had them professionally installed. My home already had a very similar faux wood flooring in the living spaces, so I had something close to matching installed in the bedroom a couple years after I moved in (when I had the money to upgrade from the stained carpet the house came with). 🙂

The side of the road. Ha! We have quiet a few businesses in my hometown so finding used pallets is pretty easy. Call around, I bet you can find one. 🙂

OMG thank you so much for this post. I spent the morning, would have been longer but my little one needed to nap we share a room, cleaning and organizing my room. It looks so clean, bright, and spacious. I live in a small two bedroom apartment so there was no moving of furniture but just the deep cleaning alone really transformed the room.
So mad right now though I should have taken before and after pictures!
I adore this space, Emma! It’s so cozy, and such a great mix of masculine and feminine!
I love your dressers! Than you for sharing your home, I love these post as I like to use for inspiration!
As someone with a limited budget for decorating, this was a wonderful read. I’m going to apply your ideas today. Thanks a lot!

I am in love with the succulent dresser! I have been looking for something to do with our beat up guest room dresser, but I didn’t want to just paint it. A tutorial on it would be fantastic!
i would love to know how you did your drawers!
Hi Claudia! You can see the DIY here: http://abeautifulmess.com/2015/01/project-restyle-photo-decoupage-.html 🙂 -Jacki
source of curtains please?
Your room looks beautiful! I love that side table.
The space looks great! I particularly love the change of pallet from headboard to bed frame. May I ask who painted the great portrait of you and Trey?
I am always amazed by people who can put together different styles and patterns and end up making it work. My favorite piece of this room is the headboard and flag. It looks like it could be Bruce Springsteen’s room. Born in the USA!
Such a beautiful space! And that flooring and wallpaper are totally swoon-worthy…
