Elsie and I always loved going to the mall with our mom growing up, even before we loved fashion. Our mom would always get us a soft pretzel at Auntie Ann's to share and it was always a fun treat. I still sometimes get a soft pretzel when I'm at the mall, as it reminds me of all those trips with our mom. Plus, soft pretzels are AWESOME! So we thought it would be fun to try and make our own at home. We made original and cinnamon sugar soft pretzels plus two kinds of sweet buttery dipping sauces. Delicious!
Soft Pretzels makes 8-12. Recipe adapted from here.
Needed: 1 1/2 cups warm water, 1 1/8 teaspoon active dry yeast, 2 tablespoon sugar, 1 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1 cup bread flour, 3 cups (all-purpose) flour, 3-4 tablespoon melted butter, course sea salt, cinnamon and sugar, 1 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon baking soda.
Dissolve the yeast in the 1 1/2 cups warm water. Stir in the sugar and salt. In a kitchen aid mixer (or a large bowl, working by hand) combine the bread flour, all-purpose flour, and yeast solution. Mix/knead until dough is elastic-like (4-6 minutes). Set dough in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise for 1 hour. Once dough has risen cut it into 8-12 pieces and roll out into a long rope. Twist into a pretzel shape. Dip in a shallow bowl containing the 1 cup warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda. Place an a baking sheet (that's been covered with parchment paper), cover and allow to rise for another 45 minutes to an hour. Brush on the melted butter. Top with either course salt or cinnamon sugar. And bake at 375 F for 10-12 minutes.
For the sweet butters: Combine 1 stick of softened (nearly melted) butter with either honey + nuts or raspberry jam. Stir to combine. You can store these in the refrigerator (covered) for up to a week to use on your pretzels or toast!
We hope you love these homemade pretzels as much as we do! xo. Emma + Elsie

Oh boy, favorite recipe yet!! I love love love soft pretzels, in fact, I’m from the same area as the Auntie Anne…actually she worked for my grandpa for a bit before she started her business. I’ve never actually tried making soft pretzels myself other then a fun elementary school project/lesson. I’m headed to the kitchen now…haha! ๐ Thanks for sharing, this just blessed my day!!
Perfect timing! I’ve been thinking non-stop about soft pretzels for some reason this week (even though I haven’t had one in about two years) and I forgot about making them because we had a snowstorm that shut off our power for 2 days (electric stove = bane of my existence). Power is back on though and it’s time to get my bake on.
I sometimes get the pretzels from the mall too..th e smell is just tooo tempting! But wow, these look delicious..I feel like I can smell them already! thank you! will DEFINITELY be trying this!

I made these last night and they turned out SO wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
We made these and LOVED them! I made them twice, once with just all purp flour and once with the bread flour (it really did make a big difference)
LOVED THEM…. soo so so good, thanks so much for this recipe that I will now cherish and use all the time!
looks awesome ๐ can’t wait to try it!
I made these with homemade cheddar jalapeรฑo and marinara dipping sauce, and they were absolutely fabulous! Thank you for the recipe. I will definitely be making these again.
Made these today after finding the this particular blog post on Pinterest. Turned out great…with the exception that the dough was VERY elasticky and hard to roll out. I simply dipped my fingers in the baking soda water and it helped it quite a bit.
Other than that, for those of you attempting this recipe and having never made bread before, make sure you keep your dough covered with plastic wrap so that a nasty hard film doesn’t form on your dough and also keep your dough in a warm place when letting it rise. I usually turn my oven on at the lowest setting for 3-4 minutes and then turn it off and put the bowl right in the oven and keep the door closed for the whole hour.
Excellent recipe. going in my “keeper” section.

I tried out this recipe and it was perfect! They froze well too. I intentionally under baked half of the batch so that I could reheat them at a later date and they would remain fresh – worked like a charm!
love your photos. i can enjoy the cieokos in a non-fattening way. but i look forward to trying this recipe because the maple syrup is such a nice touch.
oh boy!! saw your tweet and immediate came here .. this is sad. Why does Blogger keep doing this ?? eantig away stuff all the time. 60 to 2 comment is sad ๐ You know sweetie I like all your recipes and i loved this one too. I hope the comments come back!www.sunshineandsmile.com
Oh my goodness. These look so good, they abeutolsly wouldnt be safe in my house. I realized a few weeks ago why I dont bake often. I live alone, and left unattended, I will eat every single cookie by myself. I hid oatmeal cookies in my freezer thinking that would stop me from eating so many. It didnt. Turns out frozen cookies are delicious.
just finished my second one and OMGOODNESS Amazing. The first one I dipped in apple sauce cause that is how my daughters wanted them and that was pretty good the second I dipped in nacho cheese and just as yummy. thanks for the recipe.
I just made these and they turned out wonderful! Thanks so much for the recipe! ๐
These pretzels look absolutely scrumptious. I love all breads and I grew up eating lots of bread. Still can’t find the recipe for the bread I used to eat as a child. It’s a sweet egg bread, please take a look at my blog about it!
