Winter Capsule Wardrobe

It’s that time again! Winter capsule is December-February (although you can mark the season anytime you want, that’s just what I do!) and it’s time to add a few things for winter. I just had a birthday and added a few pieces I had been eyeing and have a few more things on my Christmas list. If you’re doing your own capsule, or just getting ready for winter in general, I hope these shopping ideas will be helpful to you!

The red dress I am wearing above is from Everlane. It’s the first thing I ever bought from them and I am in love with it. It’s definitely a piece I will wear all year round.

I tend to be a little more chill about my winter wardrobe by continuing to use what I had for autumn and just adding a few more layers, tights under dresses, more boots and usually a new coat to the mix.

What about you? What are you shopping for this season? Even though winter is far from my favorite season, I do love dressing up in boots and scarves (for a few months at least … haha). And I love an excuse to wear a knit hat almost every day for four to six months straight … works for me! xx – Elsie

  • I live in Everlane Wide Leg crops and have been on the fence about trying the straight legs… look forward to seeing how you like them. I love that they make slow, ethical fashion affordable, too. Very glad to see them on your list!

    • I really like them but I feel like they run really big. I sized down and I wish I would have sized down two sizes.
      They’re really cute though! 🙂

  • I loved getting a peek into your winter capsule wardrobe. Winter is far from my favorite season as well, so dressing up makes it a billion times more enjoyable. I’ve definitely spotted a few things I need to add to my wardrobe. 🙂

  • Hello: How fun! Can you let us know the source of the ottomans in the top photo? Beautiful! Thank you !

  • I love this post, and your taste in clothes! Love love love!! For this season I am shopping for jumpers, I love the baggy kind as they are super cosy, and boots.

  • I’ve been totally spoilt this Christmas with two beautiful vintage corduroy skirts. I adore corduroy, wool and velvet for winter especially in surprising colours (one skirt is bottle green the other blood orange, I have the best husband)
I notice you have 4 crop leg pants on your list, how do you style these with boots? Dont the proportions get messed up? Love ABM❤ Thank you ladies, see you in 2019! xxx

  • I love your style and a lot of these pieces are so good, but I don’t think you really understand what a capsule wardrobe is. The whole point is to own less and to carefully choose high quality, classic pieces you can mix and match to create several different outfits, that will last and carry you through different seasons (like your putting tights under a dress and throwing a cardi on top). I’ve never seen it done season by season or with so many pieces! Some of these are very similar too. I don’t know if you’re posting your wardrobe or just ideas, but there are five casual jackets, four small purses, six pairs of boots, even two jump suits and a pair of overalls. It’s ok not to be a minimalist, and maybe this is minimal for you, I remember your huge rack of winter coats from years ago, but it’s more than I own in my regular, definitely not a capsule, year round wardrobe. Embrace what you love! You have good style.

    • Hi Amanda,
This is definitely a shopping ideas post- not a checklist of everything I bought (although I did buy some of these items).

I have said many times that a capsule can have different purposes to different people. For some what you have described may be the goal. For me, the goal was always to take shopping breaks between seasons, which has been incredibly valuable for me both in saving money and in working toward a less shopping-obsessed mindset. I think ANY positive goals or changes are worth pursuing. I may never be a real minimalist, but introducing the capsule idea helped me quite a bit to develop healthier habits. 🙂

      • Thanks for taking the time to respond and explain. That makes a lot more sense, and sounds like a really good goal! I can see how that would help others too. You’re absolutely right, any positive changes are a great thing! I appreciate you sharing your experience rather than deleting my comment. That’s a sign of a great website/blog.

  • I’d love to see another post of your outfit photos from your phone! I started taking photos of outfits that I liked after your suggestion and it really helped a lot this fall! It was so nice to go back to that album when I was in a hurry or in a rut and needed some inspiration. Happy New Year!

  • This might seem a daft question, but what do you do with the clothes that are not in your current capsule? Do you pack away your spring/summer/autumn clothes somewhere else so that you can just have your winter clothes in your wardrobe? I have all my clothes in my wardrobe all year round……
