Today, Cheryl Day is here to share a little bit about her bakery, Back in the Day! We're smitten with her charming space!"Hi! My name is Cheryl Day and I own Back in the Day Bakery with my husband Griff; it's a neighborhood bakeshop in Savannah, Georgia. Our specialty is handcrafted American scratch baking and I think it is the best job in the world.
Along with being a baker I am also an author of cookbooks. "The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook" with Artisan Books is about our tried and true recipes and how we enjoy living a handmade life. We were named Amazon's along with Food and Wine Magazines top 25 cookbooks of 2012. Such an honor! I am currently working on our second book."
"I rise early at 3:30 a.m. and head into the bakery for my favorite time of day. Early morning is quiet time and I am in the baking zone. I start making breakfast pastries followed by other sweet treats like cupcakes, cookies and pies. Once our doors open, the hustle and bustle is in full swing and the bakery smells amazing. When you walk in the door you can't help but smile at our marshmallow chandelier and I love seeing all the smiling faces that graciously come visit to support what we do. My day is filled with timers, questions, telephones and meeting guests who come from near and far to visit our little bake shop."
"I love to repurpose vintage treasures to organize my tools. My kitchen has an industrial vibe so I take every opportunity to repurpose something old in a new way. I love the juxtaposition of industrial and pretty things too. I rarely use things for what they are intended. For example, my beautiful hand painted tape dispenser holds my shiny tape measure spool, the old mattress spring acts as my inspiration board, pie plates hold outgoing mail, recipe box holds birthday cards, an old metal shop display is my bookshelf."
"People often ask me if I have always had a love for vintage items and the answer is YES! I like to describe my personal style as vintage bling. I love beautiful, glitzy, girly things. I love the history attached to something old from clothing to furniture. I always try to imagine the stories they might tell."
Thank you for stopping by to share your lovely space with us, Cheryl! You can find more about Back in the Day Bakery over on their site and be sure to check out their fun cookbook! xo.

Oh, how wonderful! My husband and I go to Savannah all the time to shoot weddings! Back in the Day Bakery is one of our very favorite stops while we are there! π
It’s about time I see something about them here! That is to say, the style matches so perfectly with A Beautiful Mess! I hope you can all make a trip to Savannah together one day! Surely there is a business reason for exploring a lovely Southern city for research or just a company retreat or something ! π
I blogged about a trip to Back in the Day a while ago on my blog:
http://thelovelylemon.com/2012/05/30/out-and-about-back-in-the-day-bakery/
Back in the Day is one of my all time favorite places to eat! Love it there!!
What the photos don’t show you is that all of the baked goods are ridiculously delicious, too! I work a couple doors down, and it’s almost impossible to resist cookie:30 (approx 3:30pm) every day. It’s a hardship working this close to such temptation.
Aww their cookbook has been on my amazon wishlist for a long time now! Soo cool that you guys made them a part of the series. <3
Peace.Love.Lauryn
Great place! It brings me back to my childhood π

I am lucky enough to live in Savannah and believe me, Cheryl & Griff are the real deal — talented, kind, funny, generous people. The staff at the bakery is the same and it’s always a delight to visit them. And then there’s the food. OMG from cookies to cupcakes, sandwiches with house made pimento cheese and bacon jam to brownies, cakes, and the best banana pudding in the universe — Back in the Day is a magical place. Come on and visit!!
Wow your bakery looks AMAZING! I love the repurposed items, I didn’t realise the memo board was mattress springs until you said! And the cupcake look delish xx
