Elsie’s Homemade Chex Mix Recipe

I make a big batch of homemade Chex mix every year (sometimes twice!) between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. We have a couple different variations, which I’ll explain below. It’s super easy to customize to exactly your taste (notice we leave pretzels and peanuts out; we also left out candy this year because if it’s in there our daughter only wants to eat the candy and nothing else—lol).

If you’ve typically purchased pre-made Chex mix at the store and are scratching your head as to WHY this needs to be a homemade recipe, allow me to explain! Homemade Chex mix is 1000% more tasty that what you can buy at the store—it doesn’t even compare. It’s like a homemade chocolate chip cookie versus store bought—no contest.

Anyway! Here’s the recipe!

3 cups corn Chex cereal
3 cups rice Chex cereal
3 cups wheat Chex cereal
1.5 cups sesame sticks
1.5 cups Cheez-Its
1 cup rye chips (these are always so tough to find, but I add them when I can)
optional—1 cup Reese’s Pieces (normally we always add these!)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 stick of butter
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon seasoned salt

-Mix Chex cereal, sesame chips, Cheez-Its and rye chips in 2 large bowls.

-Melt butter and add garlic, salt and Worcestershire.

-Pour butter mixture over cereal mixture and mix well.

-Spread one layer evenly on baking sheet (I always line with parchment paper)

-Bake at 275 degrees for 45 minutes. It usually takes me several batches to get it all baked.

-Cool completely before serving or storing.

-If you add Reese’s candy, wait until the end.

Store sealed in an airtight container and it can last for several weeks. We like to keep ours in a clear jar and serve with a measuring cup.
