Emma’s Empty Home Tour (Video)

Emma's empty house tourSome of you might remember about aΒ month ago when I mentioned that Trey and I MIGHT be buying a new house. Emphasis on the might because we had a house fall through the night before closing, so I was feeling pretty unsure of everything until it was all official.

Well, it’s official. And I thought it might be fun to show you what our new house looked like the day we bought it. I say looked like (past tense) because I shot this video almost three weeks ago. SO much has already changed. If you follow me on IG (@emmaredvelvet), then you may have seen that I’ve been spending pretty much every night after work and the weekends painting. More on updates soon, but first, check out my empty home tour video:

This house was originally built in the late 1960s. It has gone through a LOT of remodeling and updates in the past few years as the owner before us (rumor has it) bought the house at auction and has been working to flip it. I just LOVE the wood ceilings he added. I also really, really love the layout of this house. As you can see from the video though, there are a few things that just aren’t my taste. Luckily, I really enjoy personalizing spaces, so that’s what we’ll be doing in this house (slowly) over many years to come. Can’t wait to see how we make this house feel like home, and can’t wait to share it all with you guys. πŸ™‚ xo. Emma

  • This house is truly amazing ! Can’t wait to see all the paintings, decoration, etc… congratulations for your new house πŸ™‚

  • Woahh sometimes I can’t get over how big American houses are!
I want to move there! πŸ˜€

Love the house, the fireplace next to the kitchen is amaaaazing!

  • Emma, I always love when you do videos and speak. You seem so genuine and down-to-earth. I love the house! I can see a lot of potential here and I bet you’re having a great time personalizing your space. The only thing I didn’t maybe like was that there was only three bedrooms and I wondered how that could work for a growing family plus guests coming in and a music room. But maybe you already have that all worked out πŸ™‚ Anyways, it’s so awesome and huge and I love all of the windows. Very nature-inspired!

  • Wow there are so many things to love about this house! It has SO much potential! I can’t wait to see what you turn it into! It’ll look amazing! Congratulations! πŸ˜€

  • Amazing! I am a sucker for fireplaces and that one is AWESOME! The slanted wood ceilings give a rustic vibe too.. such a great find! Congratulations!

  • It looks like such an awesome space! I just bought a home with a big stone fireplace (not as big as that!) too! So, I’m really excited to see all your projects in this house!

  • Good God you are so cute, Emma. You’re always so sweet and freakin’ precious in your videos and I’LL BE DARNED IF I DON’T LOVE IT. Congratulations on your purchase o’ fun! It’s a beautiful house!

  • I can’t wait to follow along and see how some DIY’s take place. I’m in the beginning stages of buying my 1st house and know there was be many (many many many) DIY projects to come so this makes me super happy!

Also, congrat’s on the new home!!!!! It’s lovely!

  • Yea ~ Congrats!! What a lovely home. I can’t wait to see how you and Trey make it yours. Love all the windows and the screened in porch.

  • Hi there! Your comment made me smile, because our whole family (of 6) lives in a 2-room apartment (that we’re renting) and we often have guests coming in, too=))) Even this is possible, so I bet Emma and Jeremy will work it all out in such a huge house of theirs=)))))))))))

  • Hi Ekaterine,

Yes, I know they could make it work πŸ™‚ I live in a one bedroom with my thirteen-year-old daughter and my older daughters come and visit all the time. We kind of have always made the bedroom, anywhere I have lived, the hub of the house. I was just thinking in terms that they haven’t had their kids yet and in planning ahead, moving into the future, I would have thought they’d go bigger, more bedrooms. I would, if I had the money to do so πŸ™‚ That’s all I meant. It’s a gorgeous home and can’t wait to see what she does with the place.

  • Congratulations!! I am truly so happy for you – you work so hard for everything you do, you deserve this gorgeous space! I am little jealous of the super high ceilings…I’m in a basement suite and my 6’1″ husband could use something with a higher ceiling πŸ˜‰ CAN’T WAIT to see how you transform it!! Good luck!

  • Wow that’s a great home! and the wooden ceiling is amazeballs too (which you didn’t mention on the video but i’m sure you are excited about, right?)

I totally agree with the countertop change, although it seems pretty good and expensive the current one. That’s a pity ! And since you won’t have the studio anymore you really need a good countertop for all the photoshooting !

can’t wait to see the progress! it really seems very promising!

  • This house really has so much potential! And I can`t wait so see how this house will turn out once you`ve finished with your magic πŸ˜€

  • This is absolutely lovely!! I’m so excited for your new adventure πŸ™‚ Thank you for sharing your life with us!

  • WOW! I love the wood floors and cielings, that fireplace, and the porch!! They just do not make houses like that where I live.

  • I’m so excited that y’all are all buying new houses because that means even more house projects and inspiration!

  • Wow. I want to leave the Netherlands and my tiny house and move to America and live in one of these gigantic houses!! Love the fireplace and stone wall. Oh the high ceilings. Oh my. Have fun!! Super jealous!

  • That house is really great! It’s very solid looking and I think that paint will go a long ways. Can’t wait to see some updates!

  • Hi Emma! That house is AMAZING, I love the big open space of the kitchen/dining/living room area!

BTW, could you make a house floor plan like the one you made for the HBH house?

  • That’s a gorgeous home and I can’t wait to see your updates and how your personality will be in that space. It’s so adult, too! Great find.

  • Your house is stunning! The kitchen, gigantic fireplace and walk-in closet are my favourite features. Oh, and the master bathroom! There was a reason why your other house fell through, this one is gorgeous! So happy for you and Trey.
Can’t wait to see what you will do with it. Congratulations!

  • House look great – can see why you purchased. Natural light is big for me also – after location that was second on my list. So looking forward to seeing you make it your own.

  • “I’m still learning how to use my DSLR so most of my shots are in automatic mode. I did recently learn that changing my ISO to a higher number helps when taking photos in low light. You can also change your shutter speed but if you’re like me and haven’t gotten that far, experiment with your ISO. It’s amazing how much brighter your photos will be set at 800 than 200.”

  • Yes, this one feels especially big compared to my last house (it’s about twice the square footage) and the lens we used for the video kind of makes it feel even bigger. So a bit of visual trickery (unintentional) too. πŸ™‚

    -Emma

  • What a unique house! I love the fireplace and how spacious it all looks! If it were me, I couldn’t touch the front door though. It’s gorgeous as-is! The hardware on it is KILLER. Enjoy your new home!

  • Yes, we looked at some houses that had more bedrooms. Truth be told we don’t plan on starting our family just yet. I’d love it if this house becomes our forever home, but I also don’t know for sure if it will. We’ll see. Either way I think three bedrooms will be fine for us in the long run, but of course you never know.

We had thought that we *could* turn the second living room into a fourth bedroom some day if we want to. But, I don’t know, it would require adding a closet and two doors to the space so we’ll see if we decide it’s worth it. We’ve got years to think about it anyway.

This house is, however about twice the square footage of current house so it feels like we’re getting a LOT of extra space even though there might not be way more bedrooms.

Anyway, lots of random thoughts here. I guess, I’ll just say that I think you’ve pointed out one of the big things we thought about when we were buying. Is three bedrooms enough for us? And for now (and probably years to come if not forever) we feel it is. πŸ™‚

  • Oh my gosh the ceilings are fun! I LOVE them. How will I dust that high though??? Idk. But I love them!

About the countertops, I know, right?! They are nice. I was able to donate them to HFHS like I mentioned so that made me feel a little better about not keeping them but, I just knew I’d never grow to like them. I’m excited to photograph for the blog and my cookbook on something a little different. I felt like that real diva though! Oh well, it’s my house and Trey was onboard too so I guess it’s just fine. I think I just over think things.. that and I’m fairly cheap (although that’s subjective, I realize) so getting rid of perfectly nice counters has left me feeling like the emoji with the straight face. If that even makes sense?

    -Emma

  • Wow the house looks great!! I love all the big windows and the wood ceiling is so cool! White cabinets will open up the kitchen so much more

  • Gorgeous home!! That front room with the kitchen and the fireplace is amazing…the wood ceilings are everything. Love it, can’t wait to see all of the work you do on it. Truly inspiring.

  • I’ve been in this house! My husband is a real estate agent and he showed it to his parents when they were looking. I’m excited to see what you do with it! Congrats!

  • I love your house videos!
It really gives us a sense of how you are in real life (not that a blog isn’t real life but you get my drift). I’m excited for all your projects and congrats on the purchase.

    all the best!

  • This is a wonderful house! I can’t wait to see it transform in your style πŸ™‚ I guess we will see a lot of graphic black and white. Happy messy decorating!

  • This house is beautiful, Emma!!!! This really is a dream home. Congratulations to you both. It is nice that you won’t have to make too many updates to get it where you’d like it.

  • Hey Emma!

  • What a great house, I LOVE those vaulted ceilings in the main living area! I have a 1955 ranch house that I have been slowly making my own over the past year and I have found retrorenovation.com to be a great resource.

Can’t wait to see what you do with the space!

  • You are so sweet, Emma…thanks for sharing your new home with us. I’m so happy for you and Elsie and all of your good fortune…it couldn’t of happened to nicer people! πŸ™‚

  • omg that kitchen is amazing!
I expected you were going to say your garden was huge and then you said small and I was like wait what? we have a garden of 5 by 2 meters so I am not used to much hahaha. But the houses in your area will probably have bigger gardens. I wish you guys the best in this beautiful new home!

  • I would move to America just for the houses. They all look so pretty en big! Even the tiny houses! And what a big backyard! We pay sooooooooooo much for such a big house with such a backyard here in Belgium :'( I can’t wait to see how you make it your home!!

  • Hi Emma !

these videos are my favorites, I love seeing how your home evolves and all the DIY you make.

There is something that is really bothering me though, and it’s not the first time I notice it (hope I’m not rude) but the music is too loud in the videos, I mean compared to the volume of your voice. Hope it’s OK to say that because my English is not so good…

    Thanks a lot for sharing

  • I love to see your videos, you are really beautiful and photogenic, and so so friendly when you talk.
And I’m so in love with your house, those big windows and the backyard will go in my “dream house” scrapbook journal.
I wish you two good luck and all the happiness in the world πŸ™‚

  • This might sound a little off, but I’m so proud of you! I remember your post years ago telling about how you bought your first house all by yourself, and then I saw this video and your new house looks AMAZING! It’s so big and I bet it’s going to look awesome in the future (it kind of already does). I’m so happy for you and Trey! Congratulations!

  • Hi Emma… love the house, the kitchen is going to look fantastic with the white cabinetry and the wooden sloped ceiling. I’m curious about your office though and what the tv shaped object on your wall is? I can’t quite tell what it is in the video, I thought it might be connected to the fire, but it seems too low?
Great to see the progress, you make it all look so easy! Karen

  • The house is beautiful! I can’t wait to see what you do with it, especially when you add the doggie door! I also live in a house with glass windows in all the doors. We have always wanted a doggie door but never quite sure how to put one in.

  • Beautiful house! Definitely looks like it could be forever home material, very spacious seeming yet also very cozy. I also think it looks pretty good to start with so I can see how it would be easy to take your time making it yours and not feel rushed to get rid of anything unsightly, because I don’t see anything unsightly!

Congrats and good luck moving and settling in!

  • I am so jealous of your kitchen! Though I have the same counters in my apartment and I hate ours too! Unfortunately I can’t change them. πŸ™ They are not very photo-friendly and you can’t see dirt on them! Lucky you, you can change yours. Can’t wait to see what you do!!
