Fancy Grilled Cheese 9 Ways

1

The cold weather months really put me in the mood for grilled cheese sandwiches and soups. And although Elsie and I are huge fans of a classic and simple grilled cheese sandwich, we thought it would be fun to come up with some variations for a family lunch we hosted over the weekend. Elsie also brought her panini maker over to my house, it was my first time using one and I've got to say- I'm now a huge fan! We made 9 different grilled cheese variations for our family to choose from, some savory some sweet. My favorite was the tuna with spicy mustard, while our mom favored the apple and provolone.

2

Our flavor variations included: jalapeno peppers and colby jack cheese, bosc pear slices with ricotta and honey, cream cheese (or brie) with raspberry jam, and sour apple with provolone.

3

Here you can see: bacon, avocado and munster cheese, summer sausage with banana peppers and swiss, fresh tomatoes with pesto and mozzarella, tuna salad with spicy mustard and munster cheese, and caramelized onions with swiss cheese.

  • I really like this post! 😀 It’s cool to see all of the different variations you came up with. 😀 My boyfriend really seems to enjoy grilled sandwiches, as well as fruit in savory sandwiches, so I’ll have to tell him about this. 😀

  • Yummy! I love grilled cheese and aim to try as many of those combo’s as possible! I really love these posts because a goal of mine is to be a more thoughtful cook, either for my family or a get together. I’m soooo not right now! So Thanks and Hearts, Janna Lynn

  • We make one with gorgonzola cheese and honey drizzled on top, after it’s grilled. Domino called it “grown up grilled cheese.”

  • *off to look for a panini maker*
haha, unfortunately, I’m jusy joking but this will stay in my head until I buy one!!!!

  • Panini makers are the best! That reminds me to get mine out and make some delicious sandwiches! Thanks for all of the great ideas for new toppings. Yum.

This post has totally got my stomach growling, ha!

  • YUM! I love traditional grilled cheese! You just gave me so many other delicious options!!!! I can’t wait to try these!

  • LOVE grilled cheeses. Those of you without a panini press, use the bottom of your tea kettle to press a sandwich in the pan. I like a classic basil/tomato addition or bacon and avocado.

  • yum! thanks for the tip above! i’m going to try that. these combo’s all sound so good and i have to say the plaid and polka dots look charming!

  • one of my favourite comfort foods. i’ll definitely be trying the caramelized onion and swiss. thanks for the great ideas!

  • Goodness, I have been on a strict diet for a month and just lost 10lbs and now see this post and am starving! Looks yummy! Now I want a panini maker too. Just got my bf a pasta machine for his birthday. He has no idea. Ever used one of those? I hope it’s good!

  • I am completely in love with your blog! It is one the most interesting ones I’ve ever seen! My only regret is that I can’t find a spot to get it sent directly to my email to read! I will definitely keep track of you by facebook! Love your stuff!

  • oh yumm. my tummy hurts after too many sweets today, so a salty buttery little grilled cheese sandwich sounds so good right now. i never even thought of adding in different things to give it more power. good idea 🙂

  • Yum, yum! I love grilled cheese sandwichs, but have to say I’m a big fan of the plain old bree cheese & tomato 😀

  • Oh! I’m so jealous of you having all those gorgeous looking sandwiches to eat after you’d taken the photo of them. I think the apple and provolone is the one I’d go for, too.

  • It’s four AM here. Does this mean I’m not going to go make grilled cheese? No, not at all.

I’ll be back after my snack. 😉

  • oh my gosh – yes please to all of those (well – minus the meat). As a vegetarian – this is like the best food post I have ever seen!

    Much love,

    B

  • I had grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner over the weekend and it was delicious. My favorite grilled cheese is apple and brie- it’s perfection!

  • i am a lover of all comfort foods, and grilled cheese sandwiches are always at the top of my list! i’m dying to try these combinations!

  • I definitely need to try the pear, honey and ricotta and the muenster, bacon, avocado. And probably several of the other flavors! Yum!

I don’t have a panini press, but I’ve used a foil-wrapped brick (just from the backyard) a few times and it works pretty well!

  • these are perfectly amazing choices. i love making fancy grilled cheese sandwiches too! ah and with soup! yum, this makes me hungry for lunch at 8:30 in the morning!

  • Yum! These all look great, though I’m craving sweet at the moment so the pear with ricotta and honey would be great 🙂

  • Oh my goodness it’s only morning here and my mouth is watering. That banana betters with sausage and swiss looks amazing. I too should become more creative with my grilled cheese!

  • love this guest post and love the new blog look, Elsie!! Amazing work and inspiration, as usual. My7 family loves grilled cheese so I will be going back to this this fall/winter!

  • Ah YUM, these grilled cheese sandwiches look fantastic! With this weather there really is nothing better than a nice grilled cheese… I must try these versions!

    Under My Umbrella

  • Ok, wow. I was hungry before, but am now about to gnaw off my left arm. And the AVACADO! Big time nomz. Thanks for the great ideas!

  • Oh wow! Those look absolutely divine. I think I need to try some. We used to experiment with our paninis too, but we never really got past pesto and cranberries…
    😀

  • Mmmm these sound so good. I’m all about homemade “gourmet” grilled cheese. What a fantastic idea for a blog post. I can’t wait to try the apple/provolone and classic tomato/pesto/mozzarella versions.

  • my favorite is gruyere cheese and a fried egg on rosemary sour dough bread. mmmm, i love a grilled cheese.

  • They all look so tastyyy! Can’t wait to try every single one. 🙂 Thanks for the ideas!

  • I have also been really into fancy grilled cheese lately, mostly because of seeing so many cool ideas for it on Pinterest. I tried strawberry and goat cheese, which was really good, and I’ve been wanting to do something with asparagus, but I’ll have to wait for early spring for that I suppose. If you’re interested, both ideas and a few others I think are on my food pinboard here – http://pinterest.com/fashionisevo/food/

  • Just had to mention, since I remember that you’re a fan– She and Him will be putting out a Christmas album, and it’s available for pre-order now!

  • What a super YUMMY post! Cheese is my passion and I’m getting so hungry looking at those pictures; I’d go for caramelized onion+swiss or apple+provolone 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  • Love all the ideas. I would have never, EVER thought to put pears in my grilled cheese but now I’m curious enough to give it a shot. Thanks!

  • The pear and ricotta cheese one sounds amazing! I haven’t had a grilled cheese sandwich in forever. I totally want one now!

  • A George Foreman Grill makes an excellent panini maker at a fraction of the price, you even get the grill marks! These look amazing, making my mouth water . . .

  • a grilled cheese sandwich is my SECOND favorite food. (macaroni & cheese being #1) these all look so delicious. i’ll have to try them out!

  • I love grilled cheese sandwiches this time of year too. I had never though of pairing apple slices or some of the other combinations you came up with. What a brilliant idea!

  • Just made the apple and provolone one. Delicious! No panini press, but it worked just fine in a pan with a pair of tongs to flip the sandwich over.

  • Amazing how such simple ingredients can make a delicious sandwich. There’s a place near me that uses apple slices, provolone, colby jack and spicy mustard. Now that was a grilled cheese.

  • Yum. Thanks for some new ideas. I have a sandwich maker that I use. My fav is cream cheese, spike seasoning, pickled jalapenos & cheddar.

  • Got so inspired by this post!! I made a little grilled cheese up myself and holy crap, it’s the best thing i’ve ever stuffed in my face. YOU HAVE TO TRY IT. It’s mango and pineapple sauteed in butter and sweet&low, with provolone cheese and peta bread. It tastes freaking amazing. I thought i’d share :)))

  • Niiiice! Heh, the only “flaw” I see here is that it would be hard to sample and enjoy everything in one sitting. Still, it’s a great way to show the versatility of the simple grilled cheese sandwiches. For starters, there are different types of breads and cheese. With such a wide variety, it is likely to discover combinations that have the potential to rock on a cool day.

  • that i will follow you ..i will do it ..here i am and 1 of your fans now . never tried etliaevon burger yet ..but it sounds and looks yummy . i know a lot of friends working there .i will be travelling next june and i will send some nice pics from florida .keep it up my friend .[]

  • Not to be intentionally arnmteguative or unco-operative, but I feel compelled, in the interests, of the continuing intellectual advancement of the human race and non-stalling of same, to point out that neither I, nor (I suspect but cannot immediately prove, although give me time and the neccessary resources and I will do so if you absolutely insist) any of your other readers, thought for one moment that it was a grilled cheese sandwich.Obvously it’s a cat.

  • so I re-pinned this picture onto my pireentst because it looked so yummy! And TODAY was the day I decided to make it! From the moment I got to work, I’ve started all my conversations off with Let me tell you about my grilled cheese. And everyone is riveted! (seriously, people’s eyes lit up when I told them the ingredients) One of my co-workers even came down to see it at lunchtime. I have to admit, mine didn’t come out as beautiful as yours, but it was amazingly delicious! So thank you for the idea! I think you should re-invent all food. And I will be waiting to see what you come up with next!

  • I LOVE grilled csheee with apple. Now Im vegan, but I just use vegan csheee and gluten free bread. SO good. Im a big fan of the apple, csheee, carmalized onion combo as welll. But avocado and bacon (veggie bacon for me!) sounds out of this world. Thanks for the idea!!

  • I’m thrilled you’re so exeitcd about receiving my book! I hope you find the recipes as delectable as your pound cake grilled cheese sandwich, which sounds terrific. Enjoy, and say GRILLED cheese! — Laura Werlin

  • Grilled cheese is a very tasty diet because it is usually added up with tomatoes, spices and condiments such as mustard, etc..

  • We tried the munster, bacon and avocado this week and it was delish!!! We used turkey bacon and I grilled it on our little george foreman (butter spread on outside of bread slice, slice of cheese, bacon, avocado sprinkled with a little pepper and 1 more slice of cheese).
