One of my favorite things about DIY projects is that you can make things that look a lot more expensive than they are. I have been eyeing some marble and brass shelving online for a small nook in our bathroom, but they were a bit too pricey (especially when I was wanting a two shelf situation), so I thought I would MacGyver up a situation of my own instead! The great thing is, making them is a lot easier than you’d think!
Supplies:
–6” x 12” marble tiles (you’ll use 2 per shelf and there are 10 tiles in this particular lot)
-6” x 24” wooden board (have the lumber place cut it for you or use a jigsaw to cut)
-Liquid Nails adhesive (use a caulking gun to apply)
-white paint
-shelf brackets of choice (I used these and painted them gold)
-painter’s tape (optional)
Use some painter’s tape to determine the placement of where you want each shelf to sit.
Paint the bottom and sides of each board (no need to paint the middle of the top) with several coats of paint. Use the Liquid Nails to attach the two tiles side by side to the top of each board.
Attach the brackets to the bottom of each shelf, and then install the brackets on the wall. That’s it!
It’s great to have the extra shelf space in the bathroom, and I love how they turned out! How pretty would these be as open shelving in a kitchen too? With the supplies that I bought the price averages out to about $40 per shelf so you may have thought you couldn’t afford marble shelving in your home, buuuut now you know you can! I love this project and all you do at ABM!! But isn’t it rather out of touch with the average person to say that $275+ for two shelves is affordable? That last sentence really killed me because I love love love this project but it’s just not affordable for me or most people I know!

Hi Allie, I think the price you see at the site for the marble tiles is for a pack of 10, not for each one, so you would only need 1 pack ($55). If I’m not mistaken, you can also buy each tile for $11 as a sample. I hope this helps!

These look so good! In my situation the natural wood would also look pretty awesome. Is that a big hunk of Himalayan salt or Rose quartz? Have you ever gone to a granite/surfaces/marble supplier where they cut the slabs on site to ask if they have any trim cuts or scraps? Sometimes they give those out for super cheap or free. Might not be your exact size but a slight lip on this shelf would be ok too.

Yep, Aida is correct! The linked lot is for 10 tiles so you could make 5 shelves with it or find other tiles you like locally that will let you buy a smaller quantity. My shelves were about $40 per shelf with the linked products 🙂

These are gorgeous. Marble makes things look so fancy. For anyone complaining about the price though(and I’m not arguing because “expensive” is a very subjective term), I think a similar look could be achieved using marble contact paper for a less expensive option. Just a thought!

This is great news! I looked at the listing for the tiles before and I didn’t see anything about it being a multi-pack so maybe you can see how I got so disappointed in the price – thanks for the updated info! This looks good, but may I suggest an upgrade? There is no reason to put a wooden piece under the marble (which, in my opinion, leaves a gap that is unsightly). The brackets can be mounted on the wall, and then the marble can be attached using silicon. This gives a much cleaner look.
