Rain Diary: Art Journal

1 rain dairyToday Kara is going to share a beautiful art journal that captures one of the beautiful things about her hometown. Enjoy…

2 rain diary 1I live in a rainy, rainy city (Portland, Oregon) and I wanted a way to record all these lovely (and not so lovely) rainy days. So, I created a Rain Diary. The idea is simple…. Find a piece of scrap paper, run out into the rain, and capture a few droplets. Journal a few thoughts, date it, and you are now on your way toward having a Rain Diary! Here is a tutorial on how I created the book that holds my rain collection.

3 rain diary stepsNow let's put the book together! 1. I decided to use an Instax Wide picture on my cover, so I hand-cut a few rain drops from Hambly Screenprints paper and taped them to my wall before snapping a picture. The photo was a little more boring than I wanted, so I decided to draw the edges on with a pen and scribble over the white parts with a Prismacolor marker. 2. I began by collecting rain on pieces of paper. I used a random, extra notebook I had on hand. 3. I then I ripped about 10 pages out of an extra-large Moleskine cahier journal and folded them in half. 4. I then fed the papers through my sewing machine and sewed along the folded seam to create a binding. Sew back and forth on the beginning and edge like you would on fabric to "tie a knot".5. Collect the materials you would like to use in your book. I recommend choosing several different elements, but repeating them throughout your book to create a consistency. I used record covers and a floral ribbon through my book and I think it helps it feel much more unified. 6. Since the book is already wrinkly because of the rain and the type of paper I chose to use, I like to add even more texture to the mini-book! I used masking tape folded over the edges and trimmed them later.

Here are the pages I've created so far…
4 rain diary pages 15 rain diary pages 26 rain dairy edgeThanks so much, Kara! I'm so inspired by this. What topic would you choose for an art journal about your hometown? xo. elsie

  • Monsoon season approaches us here in korea, so this is a perfect project to help us through the wet, drizzly weather to come. The topic I would use for my hometown? I think for Korea the theme would maybe be kimchi…all things pickled or the bright colors of the temples…there are so many it’d be hard to choose!

  • to the 15 year old mother if you tguhhot your daughter had an odor wouldnt you want to know if they develop body odor at this age to know if its normal? I would think that’s part of being a GOOD parent.. and i highly doubt that she put her nose right on her daughters privates.. grow up! and get your mind out of the gutter you really are showing your age huhAnyways, yeah I have wondered that also. I dont think it should be an odor that is there all the time, and it is not always a sign of infection either. If it is strong smelling and there is a discharge then i would suspect an infection. My daughters, when in diapers, would occasionally get an odor down there. I would smell it when taking off their diapers. I realized the smell would be most noticeable when we were out and about and they may have sat in a soggy diaper, or when it was really hot out. A bath always seemed to do the job.. I think when a child is in diapers its common because of the bacteria in the urine and the body keeping their area clean. Now that they are potty trained i have not noticed anything at all.. IF your asking because of yoru daughter and she is potty train ed and you notice smells i would just ask the pedi, but is she doesn’t itch or have discharge i wouldn’t suspect an infection..I love how the second someone has an odor or even a grown women having a discharge everyone is so inclined to say infection some things are completely normal and do not always mean infection..

  • i imagine there is a mild scent to some dergee since our genitalia is folded up inside.. it is not noticeable til around puberty when the cervix starts to secrete mucus. if there is a really noticeable smell at an early it could be she may need a bath but if it smells foul or bad i would be concerned and take her to the doctor to make sure its not an infection or something she could have put up in there.

  • Pregnant at 28 with #1 totally fried my awoseme ability to multitask and stay on task w/out any external help (planner, anyone?). I used to be so organized, so on the ball, I was awoseme at returning emails and phone calls that day, remembering appointments, bills; and then placenta brain hit, and it hasn’t gone away This is why I keep lists of everything! On the fridge, I have a magnetic pad for a grocery list, a list of larger to-do projects, a magnetized list of the week (meals, outings, cleaning schedule, and night activities), and I have a detailed cleaning list. On the laundry room door, I have a pictographic schedule up so that I can remember to brush our teeth at least once a day! I keep a notebook on my desk to jot down things so I won’t forget. I keep a notebook and pen in my purse. does this tell you anything?

  • I’m a chronic multi-tasker. I haven’t paid close egnouh attention to the ups and downs of my multi-tasking competency throughout the years to say if I follow the trends you outline, but I CAN tell you that it often feels like my skills come and go on a weekly (or even daily!) basis. At times, I get into this groove where everything snaps into place and I can juggle all my tasks without batting an eyelash. And then, there are those times when I’m so braindead that all I can do is stare at my neatly-organized To Do list and drool.I bounce back and forth about which is the lesser of the two evils: multi-tasking or single-tasking. In the end, I usually opt to do whatever I feel has to be done to get me to the end of the day. It’s what moms do.

  • I live in Cape Town, South Africa. My city is known for it’s sunny summers, surfer beaches and chilled out people. A journal capturing that would be great 🙂
