I guess maybe it’s the glasses I’m wearing in these photos, but I started thinking about how when I was a kid, I had a phase where I really wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. I know a lot of people had tons of different occupations they thought about being when they were kids, but I really probably only had two or three. But librarian was one of them. I actually had a really hard time reading in school at first. I struggled and thankfully had some pretty great teachers along the way. Not to mention a very patient mom who worked with me at home as well. But once it all finally clicked, I found that I LOVED reading. Around that time is when the first Harry Potter book came out, and I was hooked from then on out. (HP forever!)
Other than loving to read, I also just loved how quiet libraries were. I’ve always been a bit of an introvert, and I think libraries are about the closest to being alone you can be in public. 🙂 I also love putting things in order, so having to file books away all day sounded pretty great to me.
It’s kind of fun thinking about what you wanted to be as a kid. I don’t have any regrets about not becoming a librarian, but if my path had gone that way, I still think it sounds pretty cool.

I did dream of being an artist when I was growing up. And a fashion designer. And I wanted to own my own daycare. And I spent weeks drawing out my own theme park after I found out about Disney World. Haha. I was, and am, and always will be a MIND CHANGER. Recently I learned about my enneagram type. I’m a 7, which is “The Enthusiast”. Haha! I wanted to be a Navy Seal, or a mom with 13 kids. Also, I love personality tests! I’m an INFJ, and when my friend first had me take the Briggs Meyer test I felt like I could understand myself so much better.

Can you please do a post on Swedish Hasbeens? They are so cute but such an investment. Which pair is your favorite? Do you feel they fit true to size, worth the $$, how they hold up over time, etc.
Libraries are not quiet any longer. They have become community centers and most embrace a bit of noise. From kids haunted tours in Halloween costumes throughout the stacks to choral concerts in the middle of the library, libraries now strive to bring books, culture, science and fun out into the open. It is the best job but be forewarned the salaries can be low. The reward when you find a nonreader the perfect book and they return asking for more…priceless. And I kinda cringe when people use the librarian hair in a bun, long skirts, glasses at the end of their noses, shushing sterotype. You’ll see more tattoos and alternative styles these days and much more community activism.
I love reading too…and I just adore libraries. They’re my happy place!

Emma, I’m rereading the Harry Potter series right now (on #4), and it’s basically the best decision I’ve ever made. I wanted to be everything as a kid, including a librarian (after my obsession with Matilda). Other runner ups: professional horsebackrider (?), lawyer, NFL cheerleader, teacher, animal behaviorist (a la Jane Goodall), journalist, photographer, and actress (I always came back to actress – hence me living in LA!). And Elsie, love the sleeves on your dress!

Haha I don’t blame you! I wanted to be a librarian at one point too. When I got to university and started writing more intense research papers, I became obsessed with the Dewey Decimal System. I loved how it worked and how it felt like a treasure hunt when I was searching out a book from the 6 floor (no joke!) library at my university. Such satisfaction when I finally found it. I will say though that from as far back as I remember, an “artist” was always what I wanted to be. I’ve loved reflecting on that over the past few years as I really start to see things play out in my life. It’s amazing that as a child you really are developing the foundation for the rest of your life and you almost instinctively know who you are before you really actually process that intentionally.
Emma, I’m a librarian and I also own those glasses! I get a ton of compliments on them in libraryland.
I love hearing about what people wanted to be growing up! I had all kinds of crazy ideas, but my best was probably the director for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade!

Hey Emma! I’m a librarian! And if you loved Harry Potter, you should read the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. It’s fantastic, and I can guarantee you will be hooked! The only problem is that they only printed books 1-3 so far in the US. 🙁 So if you want to continue with the series, you have to order from the UK. I order my copies from http://www.foyles.co.uk/ because I own an independent bookstore and can’t bring myself to order books through Amazon, but Amazon UK would work as well. :/ I cannot understand why this series didn’t take off here the way HP did – it is just as good! Hope you try it!

I’m an INFJ also. It’s spot on! I used to work in an office and there was a lot of tension. It was a small company and the executive director was nice enough and had a certified person come in and everyone took the test. There were hundreds of questions. A lot of them similar but worded differently. They had the results tabulated and everyone was given their own profile. When we understood where each of us was coming from, things got so much better. This type of thing fascinates me. (We’re the most rare type! 🙂

When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I told them “renaissance woman.” No joke. I had a conversation with an adult around 6 or 7 that told me about DaVinci and how he was an engineer, artist, etc. and smart in a lot of areas. And I thought that was great because I wanted to be a doctor/writer/artist/inventor/teacher.
I don’t remember who that person was but I am forever grateful they encouraged me to pursue it all!
Emma, I have always wanted to be librarian too! Just being surrounded by books and quiet have always interested me too. When my kids were little I loved taking them to the library and dragging home bags and bags of books. And now that they are teenagers, we still take trips to library, and they enjoy going to their school library too.

I pursued my dream and became a librarian! Love every minute of it.
Of course, they do not pay me to read so I do that in my own time.
