Sometimes grocery shopping is the best inspiration for recipe ideas! I love picking out seasonal items or things I’ve never tried before to experiment with. Today it’s winter fruit! I picked up a couple persimmons to make a flavored syrup. It was delicious, super easy to make and added a lot of to my recipe.First up, let’s make a yummy syrup!
Brown Sugar Persimmon Simple Syrup, makes one jar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
1 Persimmon, chopped
In a small size pot, combine all ingredients and bring to a simmer. As soon as the sugar has dissolved the syrup is technically ready, but let it simmer on low heat for 20 more minutes to infuse more fruit flavor. Strain fruit with a fine mesh strainer. You can store this syrup at room temperature in an airtight jar for several weeks. Winter Fruit Whiskey Smash, serves one
1/2 ounce simple syrup
3 ounces whiskey
Juice of half an orange
2 dashes angostura bitters
1 orange, diced
Pomegranate
In the bottom of a shaker muddle a diced orange with a handful of pomegranate seeds. Add the remaining ingredients and ice. Shake and serve in a small glass. Garnish with an orange slice, a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds and a couple luxardo cherries on a stick.Enjoy! xo. Elsie

I’ve recently gotten into muttling to make cocktails (can you tell I’m not generally a very classy booze-consumer?), but after a Cranberry Gin Fizz I had a little while back, I’m obsessed! I can’t wait to try this!

I’ve never made a fruit smash before, but this looks delicious with all the winter goods!

Do you strain the persimmon chunks out of the simple syrup, or do they just cook down and dissolve?
Oh, so yummy! xx

Yum! I’m sad to admit that I’ve never had persimmon before, and I think it’s about high time that I did. Excited to try this out, as it combines things I love (whiskey, pomegranate, etc.) with a new thing that I don’t know about!
Your photo shows a Hackiya persimmon, not a Fuyu persimmon. Did you use an unripe Hackiya in this recipe? Because ripe Hackiyas are like jello. And unripe Hackiyas are not at all sweet! Want to make sure I’m using the right kind of persimmon! thanks!
Where is that tea towel from? So adorable! I must have it! I miss vector calculus just a little bit.
